Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Download or read book Combustion Measurements written by Norman Chigier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-04-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with an introduction to the general problems of making measurements in high temperature and a presentation of chemically reacting flow systems. It describes each instrument with the various diagnostic techniques and discusses measurements that have been made in furnaces, flames, and rocket engines. The detailed measurement techniques described in this book cover a wide spectrum of applications in combustion systems, including gas turbine, rocket measurement techniques that were developed in laboratories. Information obtained on detailed temperature, velocity, particle size, and gas concentration distribution is leading to improve understanding of the chemical combustion process and to design imporvements in combustors.

Book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Swirling Jets

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Swirling Jets written by Sara Toutiaei and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, velocity distributions of a swirling and a non-swirling jet flows were obtained using Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) in the near field where both jets are at the same stages of development. The resulting mean velocity and Reynolds stress distributions and the energy budgets of the axial Reynolds stresses are assessed. All Reynolds stresses showed higher magnitude in the swirling case compared to the non-swirling one at the same measurement axial locations. The swirling jet is found to exhibit larger production, mean convection and turbulence transport terms in the energy budget of axial Reynolds stress. The result shows faster development of the swirling jet compared with the non-swirling jet and is in consistency with previous studies. The turbulent transport term is found to be responsible for the faster development of the turbulence in the swirling jet.

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Ronald J. Adrian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Structure of Turbulent Swirling Jets

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Structure of Turbulent Swirling Jets written by Eric J. DeMillard and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigations were carried out in both non-swirling and swirling jets at a Re = 105. A stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) system was used to acquire the measurements in both axial-radial and radial-tangential planes at x/D = (1-10). Multiple test cases were taken where both the swirl magnitude and swirl distribution was adjusted. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) was then applied to the measurements to characterize turbulence structure. The results indicate that swirl causes the structure to be more ordered and shifts the relative amount of energy from axisymmetric structure to azimuthal structure.

Book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow written by William Joseph Yanta and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented for an experimental program which investigated the application of an LDV technique in supersonic flows. This paper presents an analysis of the behavior of light-scattering particles in rapidly accelerating or shock decelerated flows, an evaluation of particle production techniques and the results of several velocity measurements. Measurements included the velocity distribution along the nozzle centerline and flow over a diamond airfoil in a Mach 3 tunnel and velocity profiles for a turbulent boundary layer in a Mach 4.8 facility. It is demonstrated that LDV measurements can be made consistently with errors of less than five percent if the particle lag is considered. (Author).

Book Interation of a Swirling Jet with a Free Surface

Download or read book Interation of a Swirling Jet with a Free Surface written by Michael S. Feyedelem and published by . This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent flow field of a swirling jet issuing from a nozzle, beneath and parallel to a free surface has been studied in as much detail as possible using a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter and flow visualization. The results have shown that the swirl leads to the faster spreading and quicker mixing of the jet. For strongly swirling jets (S = 0.522), the similarity is not reached within ten diameters downstream. The results have also shown that both the axial and tangential velocity components decrease outward from the jet axis, naturally leading to centrifugal instabilities. This, in turn, leads to the creation of large scale coherent structures at the periphery of the jet, particularly when it is in the vicinity of the free surface. The turbulent shear stresses exhibit anisotropic behavior, the largest always being in the plane passing through the jet axis. The change of TKE with S is not monotonic. It is maximum for S = 0.265, smallest for S = 0.50, and has an intermediate value for S = 0.522. This is due to the occurrence of vortex breakdown and the resulting intensification of the turbulence within the jet prior to its exit from the nozzle.

Book Vortex Rings and Jets

Download or read book Vortex Rings and Jets written by Daniel T. H. New and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, recent developments in our understanding of fundamental vortex ring and jet dynamics will be discussed, with a view to shed light upon their near-field behaviour which underpins much of their far-field characteristics. The chapters provide up-to-date research findings by their respective experts and seek to link near-field flow physics of vortex ring and jet flows with end-applications in mind. Over the past decade, our knowledge on vortex ring and jet flows has grown by leaps and bounds, thanks to increasing use of high-fidelity, high-accuracy experimental techniques and numerical simulations. As such, we now have a much better appreciation and understanding on the initiation and near-field developments of vortex ring and jet flows under many varied initial and boundary conditions. Chapter 1 outlines the vortex ring pinch-off phenomenon and how it relates to the initial stages of jet formations and subsequent jet behaviour, while Chapter 2 takes a closer look at the behaviour resulting from vortex ring impingement upon solid boundaries and how the use of a porous surface alters the impingement process. Chapters 3 and 4 focus upon the formation of synthetic jets from vortex ring structures experimentally and numerically, the challenges in understanding the relationships between their generation parameters and how they can be utilized in flow separation control problems. Chapter 5 looks at the use of imposing selected nozzle trailing-edge modifications to effect changes upon the near-field dynamics associated with circular, noncircular and coaxial jets, with a view to control their mixing behaviour. And last but not least, Chapter 6 details the use of unique impinging jet configurations and how they may lend themselves towards greater understanding and operating efficacies in heat transfer problems. This book will be useful to postgraduate students and researchers alike who wish to get up to speed regarding the latest developments in vortex ring and jet flow behaviour and how their interesting flow dynamics may be put into good use in their intended applications.
