This book was released on 2014-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 2, 1127, while praying in the church of Saint Donatian in Bruges, Charles the Good, count of Flanders, was surrounded by assassins and killed by a sword blow to the forehead. The murder of Charles, who had no progeny, nor named successor, upset the balance of power among England, France and the Holy Roman Empire, giving rise to a prolonged struggle for the countship and bloody civil war, impacting the commercial life of the most prosperous regions of medieval Europe. The eyewitness account by the Flemish cleric Galbert of Bruges of the scandalous assassination and struggle for power that ensued is the only journal to have survived from 12thcentury Europe. This new translation by medieval studies expert Jeff Rider greatly improves upon all previous versions, substantially advancing scholarship on the Middle Ages while granting new life and immediacy to Galbert's candid narrative.

Book excerpt: "Instructors of medieval history are fortunate to have at their disposal a new edition of the best selection of medieval primary sources in English translation available today. Like its predecessors, this fourth edition fulfills the promise expressed in the author's preface: to introduce us and our students to documents representing a great variety of genres, subjects, and places throughout medieval Europe and to present those documents in their entirety or in substantial portions. The documents allow us, the teachers, and more importantly, our students, the freedom to read in depth, select, and analyze---to practice history at its best, right in the classroom."---Piotr Gorecki, University of California, Riverside "Geary's careful and wise selection of texts in his reader provides the best balance between range and depth necessary for a successful source book. Students are introduced to the richness of medieval evidence and can engage with the personalities who produced it in a way that encourages further study and reflection on the Middle Ages."---Nicholas Everett, University of Toronto "Provides an excellent selection of complete texts or substantial extracts from key primary sources, helpfully grouped thematically and illustrating many current issues in modern historical study ... an invaluable introduction."---Rosamond McKitterick, Newnham College, University of Cambridge "The best collection of medieval documents in print."---A.J. Andrea, University of Vermont For this new edition, Patrick J. Geary has incorporated more bibliographical information into the introductions to the readings. Five texts have been added to better reflect legal, religious, Polish, and women's history. A glossary is provided to help with unfamiliar terms. Book Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe

Download or read book Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe written by Richard W. Kaeuper and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Europe was a rapidly developing society with a problem of violent disorder. Professor Kaeuper's original and authoritative study reveals that chivalry was just as much a part of this problem as it was its solution. Chivalry praised heroic violence by knights, and fused such displaysof prowess with honour, piety, high-status, and attractiveness to women. Though the vast body of chivalric literature praised chivalry as necessary to civilization, most texts also worried over knightly violence, criticized the ideals and practices of chivalry, and often proposed reforms. Theknights themselves joined the debate, absorbing some reforms, ignoring others, sometimes proposing their own. The interaction of chivalry with major governing institutions ("church" and "state") emerging at that time was similarly complex: kings and clerics both needed and feared the force of theknighthood. This fascinating book lays bare these conflicts and paradoxes which surrounded the concept of chivalry in medieval Europe.
