Book excerpt: Ronan Bennett's new masterpiece of literary suspense unfolds in a city on the verge of revolution. On a blustery April day, a respected St. Petersburg newspaper editor is murdered in front of a shocked crowd. Five days later, Dr. Otto Spethmann, the celebrated psychoanalyst, receives a visit from the police. There has been another murder in the city-and somehow he is implicated. The doctor is mystified and deeply worried, as much for his young, spirited daughter as for himself. Meanwhile, he finds himself preoccupied by two new patients: Anna Petrovna, a society beauty plagued with nightmares with whom he is inappropriately falling in love, and the troubled genius Rozental, a brilliant but fragile chess master on the verge of a complete breakdown. As Dr. Spethmann is drawn deeper into the murderous intrigue, he finds that he, his patients, and his daughter may all be pawns in a game larger in scope than anything he could have imagined. Punctuated with board-by-board illustrations of a chess match that plays out through the book, Zugzwang is a masterfully written novel packed with cliffhangers, romance, unforgettable characters, and a plot that keeps readers guessing to the very end.

Book The Last Man Who Knew Everything

Download or read book The Last Man Who Knew Everything written by Mike Hockney and published by Magus Books. This book was released on with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three hundred years ago, it was possible to have read all of the important books in the world. Most intelligent people of the time believed the world was a living organism. Matter was alive (hylozoism), or mind was everywhere (panpsychism), or God was everywhere (theism), or God and Nature were one (pantheism). A hundred years later, the world was viewed as a vast, purposeless machine. Either there was no God (atheism), or he was a remote God of Laws (deism) and not of revelation and salvation. Leibniz was the last genius to know everything and to accept that the universe was an organism – a mathematical organism. Leibniz was the secret author of the Illuminati's Grand Unified Theory of Everything based on "nothing". He created an entire universe out of a "Big Bang" singularity comprising infinite "monads" (zeros), each with infinite energy capacity. This is the story of the first mathematical Theory of Everything. Leibniz's monads have one last, incredible secret to reveal: they are souls!

Download or read book Games of No Chance written by Richard J. Nowakowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-11-13 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Nine-Men Morris, in the hands of perfect players, a win for white or for black - or a draw? Can king, rook, and knight always defeat king and two knights in chess? What can Go players learn from economists? What are nimbers, tinies, switches and minies? This book deals with combinatorial games, that is, games not involving chance or hidden information. Their study is at once old and young: though some games, such as chess, have been analyzed for centuries, the first full analysis of a nontrivial combinatorial game (Nim) only appeared in 1902. The first part of this book will be accessible to anyone, regardless of background: it contains introductory expositions, reports of unusual tournaments, and a fascinating article by John H. Conway on the possibly everlasting contest between an angel and a devil. For those who want to delve more deeply, the book also contains combinatorial studies of chess and Go; reports on computer advances such as the solution of Nine-Men Morris and Pentominoes; and theoretical approaches to such problems as games with many players. If you have read and enjoyed Martin Gardner, or if you like to learn and analyze new games, this book is for you.

Download or read book Drawing on Art written by Dalia Judovitz and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the central importance of appropriation, collaboration, influence, and play in French artist Marcel Duchamp's (1887-1968) work -- and in Dada and Surrealism in general -- to show how the concept of art itself became the critical fueland springboard for questioning art's fundamental premises. Duchamp was a French artist whose work is most often associated with the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. The author maintains that rather than simply negating art, Duchamp's readymades (Duchamp's "readymades" are ordinary manufactured objects that the artist selected and modified, as an antidote to what he called "retinal art") and later works, including films and conceptual pieces, demonstrating the impossibility of defining art in the first place. Through his readymades, Duchamp explicitly critiqued the commodification of art and inaugurated a profound shift from valuing art for its visual appearance to understanding the significance of its mode of public presentation.

"Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual is quite simply a masterpiece of research and insight. It is a tremendous contribution to endgame literature, certainly the most important one in many years, and destined to be a classic of the literature (if it isn't already one). The famous trainer Mark Dvoretsky has put together a vast number of examples that he has not only collected, but analysed and tested with some of the world's strongest players. This is a particularly important book from the standpoint of clarifying, correcting, and extending the theory of endings. Most of all, Dvoretsky's analysis is staggering in its depth and accuracy." - John Watson, reviewing DEM at The Week In Chess 2003 Book of the Year - JeremySilman.com 2003 Book of the Year - Seagaard Chess Reviews: "This is an extraordinary good chess book. To call this the best book on endgames ever written seems to be an opinion shared by almost all reviewers and commentators. And I must say that I am not to disagree." - Erik Sobjerg

Book Studies for Practical Players

Download or read book Studies for Practical Players written by Oleg Pervakov and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Develop Imaginative and Preventive Thinking Nowadays, chessplayers spend almost all their free time preparing openings, and rarely spend the time necessary to perfect the vitally important technique of calculating. Regular training in solving and playing out endgames studies is a good recipe for eliminating that shortcoming. This book – the sequel to Studies for Practical Players released over a decade ago – is mostly aimed at practical players who wish to improve their chess skills by developing imaginative and preventive thinking, while perfecting calculation of variations and knowledge of basic endings. In addition, this work will certainly be appreciated by every lover of beauty, logic and paradoxicality of the game. The creative collaboration between a famous trainer with a world-renowned name and a study composer who has earned the title of International Grandmaster of Composition will give chessplayers the best of both worlds: The elegance of endgame studies and the practical application of endgame theory. [Endgame studies] are an excellent training tool ... everything is as close to battlefield conditions as can be. Of course, the contents of the book are not nearly limited to studies by one author. It also includes wonderfully annotated creative works of many outstanding chess study composers and practical players. Outstanding! – From the Foreword by Garry Kasparov

Book Language Maven Strikes Again

Download or read book Language Maven Strikes Again written by William Safire and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good news! America’s master wordsmith strikes again with a new collection of erudite, witty, provocative, sometimes barbed, frequently hilarious “On Language” columns. Published in The New York Times and syndicated in more than three hundred other newspapers, these opinions from the “Supreme Court of Current English Usage” cover everything from the bottom line on tycoonese and the accesses* of computerese to portmanteau words like televangelist and Draconomics (the language maven’s own plan for our bloated economy). Although Safire makes an admirable case for adverbs and adjectives, advocates of strong verbs will be heartened to hear that he also: pleads for the preservation of the subjunctive mood; delivers, hot off the college campus, the latest lingo in which ‘rents means parents and yesterday’s wimps are today’s squids; decries the brevity-is-next-to-godliness literary school; bids farewell to anxiety (it’s been replaced by trendy stress or swangst); noodles over such weighty geopolitical questions as “when an intercept of a fighter is a buzz”; bemoans the loss of roughage to fiber; and rides herd over the language spoken in Marlboro Country. More good news! Safire again spices his own wit and wisdom with correspondence from Lexicographic irregulars, those zealous readers and letter writers who reply to his columns with praise, scorn, corrections and nitpicks—anything to match wits with Super-maven. If You Could Look It Up and Take My Word for It occupy prominent spots in your bookcase, then Language Maven Strikes Again belongs there too. If they don’t, then begin with this Safire and work your way back. *That’s not a typo—that’s a pun.
