Book excerpt: The bestselling classic that redefined our view of the relationship between beauty and female identity . Every day, women around the world are confronted with a dilemma – how to look. In a society embroiled in a cult of female beauty and youthfulness, pressure on women to conform physically is constant and all-pervading. In this iconic, gripping and frank exposé, Naomi Wolf exposes the tyranny of the beauty myth through the ages and its oppressive function today, in the home and at work, in literature and the media, in relationships between men and women, between women and women. With pertinent and intelligent examples, she confronts the beauty industry and its advertising and uncovers the reasons why women are consumed by this destructive obsession. ‘Essential reading’ Guardian ‘A smart, angry, insightful book, and a clarion call to freedom. Every woman should read it’ Gloria Steinem

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The more legal and material hindrances women have broken through, the more they seem to feel pressured to look a certain way. Many women feel that their collective progress has stalled. #2 The backlash against the ideology of beauty is so violent because it is the last remaining of the old feminine ideologies that still has the power to control those women whom second wave feminism would have otherwise made relatively uncontrollable. #3 The beauty myth is a story that states that beauty objectively and universally exists. In assigning value to women in a vertical hierarchy according to a culturally imposed physical standard, it is an expression of power relations in which women must unnaturally compete for resources that men have appropriated for themselves. #4 The beauty myth is not about women at all. It is about men’s institutions and institutional power. The qualities that a given period considers beautiful in women are merely symbols of the female behavior that that period considers desirable.

Book The Economic Reality of the Beauty Myth

Download or read book The Economic Reality of the Beauty Myth written by Susan Averett and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate income, marital status, and hourly pay differentials by body mass (kg/m2) in a sample of 23 to 31 year olds drawn from the 1988 NLSY. Obese women have lower family incomes than women whose weight-for-height is in the 'recommended' range. Results for men are weaker and mixed. We find similar results when we compare same-sex siblings in order to control for family background (e.g., social class) differences. Differences in economic status by body mass for women increase markedly when we use an earlier weight measure or restrict the sample to persons who were single and childless when the early weight was reported. There is some evidence of labor market discrimination against obese women. However, differences in marriage probabilities and in spouse's earnings account for 50 to 95 percent of their lower economic status. There is no evidence that obese African American women suffer an economic penalty relative to other African American women.

Book excerpt: In her bestselling book The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf sought to change the way in which women see themselves in relation to their bodies. Now she focuses on how they see themselves in relation to power. She argues that the feminist movement has to change if it is to speak to a new generation of women, and that, even as women are gaining more ground than ever before, a wariness of feminist orthodoxies keeps them away from the only movement capable of putting political clout behind their personal success. The book represents a call to women to throw off centuries of conditioning about the relationship between power and femininity.

  • Author : Les K. Wright
  • Publisher : Psychology Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780789000910
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book The Bear Book written by Les K. Wright and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bear Book is a composite portrait of gay bearsusually big, hairy men who favor full-face beards and prefer to wear jeans and flannel shirts. This emergent social phenomenon and new sexual iconography is burgeoning across America, Western Europe, and other parts of the gay global village. The first-ever book on the gay bear phenomenon, this book offers readers a collection of first-person observations and historical and critical investigations by participant observers within and outside the bear community. This exciting book is organized in an ideologically revealing manner, including sections on history, identity, social spaces, iconography, and the bear phenomenon abroad. Because of the dialectical position of this work, it inevitably both describes and, to a lesser extent, may prescribe various parameters of this subculture-in-the-making.

Book Disability and Popular Culture

Download or read book Disability and Popular Culture written by Katie Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a response to real or imagined subordination, popular culture reflects the everyday experience of ordinary people and has the capacity to subvert the hegemonic order. Drawing on central theoretical approaches in the field of critical disability studies, this book examines disability across a number of internationally recognised texts and objects from popular culture, including film, television, magazines and advertising campaigns, children’s toys, music videos, sport and online spaces, to attend to the social and cultural construction of disability. While acknowledging that disability features in popular culture in ways that reinforce stereotypes and stigmatise, Disability and Popular Culture celebrates and complicates the increasing visibility of disability in popular culture, showing how popular culture can focus passion, create community and express defiance in the context of disability and social change. Covering a broad range of concerns that lie at the intersection of disability and cultural studies, including media representation, identity, the beauty myth, aesthetics, ableism, new media and sport, this book will appeal to scholars and students interested in the critical analysis of popular culture, across disciplines such as disability studies, sociology and cultural and media studies.

Book Questioning Gender

Download or read book Questioning Gender written by Robyn Ryle and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind text designed to launch readers into a thoughtful encounter with gender issues. Questioning Gender: A Sociological Exploration, Third Edition serves as a point-of-departure for productive conversations about gender, and as a resource for exploring answers to many of those questions. Rather than providing definitive answers, this unique book exposes readers to some of the best scholarship in the field that will lead them to question many of their assumptions about what is normal and abnormal. The author uses both historical and cross-cultural approaches—as well as a focus on intersectionality and transgender issues—to help students understand the socially constructed nature of gender.

Book Reconcilable Differences

Download or read book Reconcilable Differences written by Lynn S. Chancer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At last! A critical look at feminist schisms that doesn't trash either side. Chancer's analysis of the sexuality vs. sexism splits is excellent and also makes for wonderful reading. I particularly liked her ideas for a 'third wave' in feminism."—Judith Lorber, CUNY Graduate Center "Reconcilable Differences brings crucial new perspectives to long-standing problems. Chancer's insights enrich our understandings of gender inequality and the policies necessary to address them."—Deborah Rhode, Stanford Law School "In this postmodern world of fractured subjectivity and incommensurabilities, Lynn Chancer boldly argues for the possibility of feminist unity amidst and through our oft-noted differences. A book of rare intelligence and broad applicability, Chancer confronts the thorny debates that have kept feminists fighting each other and unable to reconcile around even the narrowest of agendas. She argues for the vitality of these debates (around sex, around the culture of beauty and, most tempestuously, around pornography) at the same time she pushes them to new places and draws out both new dilemmas and new resolutions for the late-twentieth century feminist. Clearly the work of a creative and complex mind, Chancer's book is destined to become a *must read* for feminists of all persuasions."—Suzanna Danuta Walters, author of Material Girls: making sense of feminist cultural theory
