Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love written by Julian of Norwich and published by Ixia Press. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteenth-century anchorite known as Julian of Norwich offered fervent prayers for a deeper understanding of Christ's passion. The holy woman's petitions were answered with a series of divine revelations that she called "shewings." Her mystic visions revealed Christ's sufferings with extreme intensity, but they also confirmed God's constant love for humanity and infinite capacity for forgiveness. Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love have had a lasting influence on Christian thought. Written in immediate, compelling terms, her experiences remain among the most original and accessible expressions of medieval mysticism. This edition contains both the short text, which is mainly an account of the shewings and Julian's initial analysis of their meaning, and the long text, completed some 20 years later and offering daringly speculative interpretations.

Book excerpt: Coming from a society where women were barred from serious writing and teaching, Julian, an anchoress in the great medieval city of Norwich, nevertheless used the English vernacular of the day to describe an extraordinary series of "showings" that she received from God. Through her experiences, she identifies the female nature of Christ's suffering, the motherhood of God, and, using images from domestic daily life, emphasizes the homeliness of God's love. This new translation from the Middle English, which includes both the long and the short versions of her Revelations, preserves all the directness of expression and the rich complexity of her thoughts, offering a work that stands alongside The Cloud of Unknowing and Langland's Piers Plowman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first woman authors, Julian of Norwich produced in Revelations of Divine Love a remarkable work of revelatory insight, that stands alongside The Cloud of Unknowing and Piers Plowman as a classic of Medieval religious literature After fervently praying for a greater understanding of Christ's passion, Julian of Norwich, a fourteenth-century anchorite and mystic, experienced a series of divine revelations. Through these 'showings', Christ's sufferings were revealed to her with extraordinary intensity, but she also received assurance of God's unwavering love for man and his infinite capacity for forgiveness. Written in a vigorous English vernacular, the Revelations are one of the most original works of medieval mysticism and have had a lasting influence on Christian thought. This edition of the Revelations contains both the short text, which is mainly an account of the 'showings' themselves and Julian's initial interpretation of their meaning, and the long text, completed some twenty years later, which moves from vision to a daringly speculative theology. Elizabeth Spearing's translation preserves Julian's directness of expression and the rich complexity of her thought. An introduction, notes and appendices help to place the works in context for modern readers. Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love Translated from British Library Additional MS 37790 written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 1998 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelations of Julian of Norwich (sixteen visions inspired by the crucified Christ which she received during a serious illness) are recorded in two versions: the short text, written near the time; and the better-known second version, completed some twenty years later. The short text has a personal quality which Julian chose, probably for reasons of modesty, to edit out in her later version, but it has a simplicity and natural grace which give a clear sense of Julian as a person, and has been chosen by Frances Beer as the basis of this translation. Also included is Julian's doctrine of the Motherhood of God, excerpted from the long text. The introduction covers Julian's life and places her in the larger context of the fourteenth-century English mystical tradition.

Book excerpt: Teachings from this fourteenth-century mystic provide spiritual direction and call for you to open yourself, body and soul, to divine love. Many people are familiar with the phrase "All shall be well" but do not know much, if anything, about Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century English mystic who wrote those words. Thomas Merton declared her to be “without a doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices,” and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says that her writings “may well be the most important work of Christian reflection in the English language.” This accessible introduction to Julian's Revelations of Divine Love, an extended reflection on a series of her mystical visions, includes an informative introduction that addresses the historical, cultural and sociological context of Julian’s life and writings. Mary Earle’s facing-page commentary focuses on Julian’s profoundly hopeful vision of humanity and God, her creative imagery and her rigorous honesty about the spiritual life. Drawing directly from Julian’s text, Earle addresses a variety of topics essential to understanding Julian’s mysticism, including the infinite nature of God, the life of prayer, God’s suffering with us, the eternal and undying life of the soul, the motherhood of Jesus and the motherhood of God, “all shall be well” and more. Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich (c. 8 November 1342 - c. 1416), also called Juliana of Norwich, was an English anchoress and an important Christian mystic and theologian. Her Revelations of Divine Love, written around 1395, is the first book in the English language known to have been written by a woman. The Revelations of Divine Love (which also bears the title A Revelation of Love - in Sixteen Shewings above the first chapter) is a 14th-century book of Christian mystical devotions written by Julian of Norwich. It includes her sixteen mystical visions and contemplations on universal love and hope in a time of plague, religious schism, uprisings and war. Published in 1395, it is the first published book in the English language to be written by a woman. During her early life, the Black Death hit the city of Norwich three times. It is estimated that the plague killed about a third of England's population in one single epidemic. People died so quickly and in such numbers that "the dead could not receive proper burial and in the worst of times, lay stacked in carts like so much cordwood, or in hastily dug pits on the edge of town, or simply where they fell, in the streets." Seeing these images may have affected Julian, who was just six years old when the plague first hit Norwich. Although she does not speak of the plague directly, her book shows a deep sensitivity to suffering and dying.

Book excerpt: Julian of Norwich is esteemed as one of the subtlest writers and profoundest thinkers of the English Middle Ages for her account of the revelations that she experienced in 1373. Julian lived as an anchoress in Norwich, and after recovering from a serious illness she described the visions that had come to her during her suffering. She conceived of a loving and compassionate God, merciful and forgiving, and believed in our ability to reach self-knowledge through sin. She wrote of God as our mother, and embraced strikingly independent theological opinions. This translation conveys the poise and serenity of Julian's prose style to the modern reader. It includes both the short and long texts, written twenty years apart, through which Julian developed her ideas.
