Book excerpt: Distracted. Disturbed. Unhinged. Crazy. Yeah, that’s the best word for it. Just one glance at Harper Jennings drives me crazy. She’s my best friend’s sister, and sneaking around with her was the most exciting thing in the world — until it wasn’t. When our secrets come to light, we soon learn life’s messy, and so is love. Faced with her mortality, my mere existence as a man is reduced to nothing. That was then and this is now. I may have been the one to walk away eight years ago, but I’ll be damned if I do it again. My craving for her is stronger than ever, and like it or not, she wants me, too. I did what I had to back then for her. Now, I’ll do what I damn well please for us. The point is… we can’t help who we fall in love with. Even if it drives us crazy, I’ll make her mine.

Download or read book Women at the Wheel written by Katherine J. Parkin and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Ford Model T became a vehicle for the masses, the automobile has served as a symbol of masculinity. The freedom of the open road, the muscle car's horsepower, the technical know-how for tinkering: all of these experiences have largely been understood from the perspective of the male driver. Women, in contrast, were relegated to the passenger seat and have been the target of stereotypes that portray them as uninterested in automobiles and, more perniciously, as poor drivers. In Women at the Wheel, Katherine J. Parkin illuminates the social implications of these stereotypes and shows how they have little basis in historical reality. With chapters on early driver's education and licensing programs, and on buying, driving, and caring for cars, she describes a rich cast of characters, from Mary Landon, the first woman ever to drive in 1899, to Dorothy Levitt, author of the first automotive handbook for women in 1909, to Margie Seals, who opened her garage, "My Favorite Mechanic . . . Is a Woman," in 1992. Although women drove and had responsibility for their family's car maintenance, twentieth-century popular culture was replete with humorous comments and judgmental critiques that effectively denied women pride in their driving abilities and car-related expertise. Parkin contends that, despite women's long history with cars, these stereotypes persist.

Book excerpt: This irreverent and amusing collection consists of over 800 "misheard" song lyrics, as compiled by poet Kenneth Goldsmith, "the Napster of the malapropism [who] downloads the poetic genius of the masses as they croon to themselves in their showers"-Christian Bok. Goldsmith's renderings include "classic" misheard lyrics, such as "Inna Gadda Da Vida" ("In my gaudy Adidas baby.) as well as hundreds of others: Bob Marley singing "I shot the sheriff though I swear I was in silky pants," Jon Bon Jovi howling "Thoreau is like Ralph Emerson, Ralph Emerson is what I read." An interesting examination of the potential interpretations of sound and lyric, the book is both intriguing and hilarious, and perfect for anyone who has ever sang "She's givin me head citations." with complete conviction and abandon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventures of Harry and Paul continue with the second book in the series of The Adventures of Harry and Paul. Paul John Hausleben's first full-length novel is the novel that many readers and critics consider his ultimate masterpiece of storytelling. The novel also provides a segue to the many other adventures and stories that follow. The author’s first book, The Time Bomb in The Cupboard and Other Adventures of Harry and Paul was the first book in the series of adventures. Those stories were where readers first met the two (arguably) most famous characters of the author, but most readers and critics agree that The Night Always Comes is where the author defined them forever and where we fell in love with them. Now, many years after its initial release, The Night Always Comes is a reader's favorite and the novel that carries the label of a true classic, with heartwarming storylines laced with the author's extraordinary flair for humor and details, and his wide assortment of fascinating characters. This novel will bring you to tears, but it will also lift your spirits up with laughter and the joy of life. Most of all, it remains unforgettable while the story etches itself forever into the mind of the reader. When the bombastic, yet ever loveable, but overwhelming Harry M. Redmond Junior purchases a brand-new fancy sports car, and slips behind the wheel of his famous Trans Whizzer (AKA Trans Am) the wild adventures begin. Once more, Harry drags his best friend Paul John Henson along for the ride. While Paul narrates the adventures via a captivating play-by-play, we experience it all as the two heroes meet beautiful young women; they fall in love; they get themselves and their women into crazy adventures and situations, and then as they experience the joy and love of life, they also experience the heartache and the despair of life too. This novel contains one of the author’s most famous humorous chapters “The Flipper Strikes Back” as Paul hilariously details a horrifying ride on a sadistic amusement park ride! The Night Always Comes is still the novel that clearly defines this very talented author, within volumes and volumes of his extensive library of material, and it will forever remain a favorite work of Mr. Paul John Hausleben.

Dr. Virginia A. Simpson did too. She thought they had a wonderful relationship and had worked out all of their issues when a life-threatening illness necessitated her mother, Ruth, come live with her. When her mother moved in, she brought with her all their old issues and during the six years they lived together, they added more. Although an expert in the field of death, dying, and bereavement, Virginia often found herself overwhelmed by her caregiving role as her mother’s health continued to decline. She also felt herself on a race against time to heal their relationship before her mother died. Described as “stunning, beautiful, and honest,” The Space Between: A Memoir of Mother-Daughter Love at the End of Life offers an intimate window into the challenges of being a caregiving while also providing important information about the realities of end of life care. The Space Between gives us hope that even the most contentious relationship can be healed. By the end of Ruth’s life, the only space between Virginia and her mother was filled with love.
