Book excerpt: The Journey of a Doctor is a book of Eastern Orthodox spirituality. A doctor is searching for the spiritual dimension of the medical profession and for the necessary qualities required by a doctor in practicing his mission. The search takes the doctor to holy places where, in discussion with wise and enlightened gerontes (elders), he gets answers to the multitude of his questions. He gets answers on the virtues of prayer, humility, love, compassion and conscientiousness in practicing his profession. He gets further clarity on his relationship with the patient, with the patient's family, with his own family, with himself. He also gets answers on material issues, ethical dilemmas and how to face adverse outcomes. The book is addressed, not only to doctors but also to anyone who at some stage will fall ill and will need medical attention. It is encouraging when the patient realizes the spiritual battle of his treating doctor and his titanic efforts to offer cure and relief. The spiritual benefits of illness to the patient, to the doctor and their immediate environment are of great importance.

Book excerpt: An orphan leaves Dark Ages London to study medicine in Persia in this “rich” and “vivid” historical novel from a New York Times–bestselling author (The New York Times). A child holds the hand of his dying mother and is terrified, aware something is taking her. Orphaned and given to an itinerant barber-surgeon, Rob Cole becomes a fast-talking swindler, peddling a worthless medicine. But as he matures, his strange gift—an acute sensitivity to impending death—never leaves him, and he yearns to become a healer. Arab madrassas are the only authentic medical schools, and he makes his perilous way to Persia. Christians are barred from Muslim schools, but claiming he is a Jew, he studies under the world’s most renowned physician, Avicenna. How the woman who is his great love struggles against her only rival—medicine—makes a riveting modern classic. The Physician is the first book in New York Times–bestselling author Noah Gordon’s Dr. Robert Cole trilogy, which continues with Shaman and concludes with Matters of Choice.

Koh and published by Dr Andrew C S Koh. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Doctor is a story my life. The story began from my birthday on 11th January 1952 until my retirement day on 11th Jan 2020. The purpose of my memoir is to document my life story as a legacy for my family, relatives and friends. The story traced back to the tough beginnings of the 1950s when life and society was very backward, industrialisation, computerisation and automation was unheard of. Life was slow and leisurely, letters were sent and read through the postal service, and communication was slow and inefficient. This book is divided into 8 chapters, each chapter describing one stage of my life, with photos relevant to each chapter and a poem before each chapter. The story progressed and unfold with each chapters culminating with the testimony of my retirement in 2020. There are valuable life lessons to be learnt from a story covering a span of so many years. If any reader is inspired to trust in God, to excel in life, and to persevere in the face of adversity, this book would have achieved its purpose.

Download or read book Patients with Passports written by I. Glenn Cohen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can your employer require you to travel to India for a hip replacement as a condition of insurance coverage? If injury results, can you sue the doctor, hospital or insurer for medical malpractice in the country where you live? Can a country prohibit its citizens from helping a relative travel to Switzerland for assisted suicide? What about travel for abortion? In Patients with Passports, I. Glenn Cohen tackles these important questions, and provides the first comprehensive legal and ethical analysis of medical tourism. Medical tourism is a growing multi-billion dollar industry involving millions of patients who travel abroad each year to get health care. Some seek legitimate services like hip replacements and travel to avoid queues, save money, or because their insurer has given them an incentive to do so. Others seek to circumvent prohibitions on accessing services at home and go abroad to receive abortions, assisted suicide, commercial surrogacy, or experimental stem cell treatments. In this book, author I. Glenn Cohen focuses on patients traveling for cardiac bypass and other legal services to places like India, Thailand, and Mexico, and analyzes issues of quality of care, disease transmission, liability, private and public health insurance, and the effects of this trade on foreign health care systems. He goes on to examine medical tourism for services illegal in the patient's home country, such as organ purchase, abortion, assisted suicide, fertility services, and experimental stem cell treatments. Here, Cohen examines issues such as extraterritorial criminalization, exploitation, immigration, and the protection of children. Through compelling narratives, expert data, and industry explanations Patients with Passports enables the reader to connect with the most prevalent legal and ethical issues facing medical tourism today.
