At last, here is the book that answers the questions you always want to ask and solves those frustrating kitchen conundrums - why do some writers tell you to wash and soak rice before cooking while others never mention it? Why won't mince 'brown' the way they tell you? Will an aubergine really taste better if you sweat it with salt first? The authoritative verdict on these and every other cookery technique is here. DON'T MISS REACHER ON PRIME VIDEO! KILLING FLOOR Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher isn’t in the small town of Margrave, Georgia for less than an hour before he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not a chance in hell... DIE TRYING When a woman is kidnapped off a Chicago street in broad daylight, Jack Reacher is unlucky enough to be taken with her. They’re at the mercy of a group of men demanding an impossible ransom. Because Reacher’s female companion is worth more than he imagines. Now he has to save them both—from the inside out—or die trying… TRIPWIRE Reacher’s anonymity in Florida is shattered by an investigator who’s looking for him. But soon after his arrival, the man is murdered. Retracing the PI’s trail back to New York, Reacher wants to find out who was looking for him—and why. But he never expected the reasons to be so personal...or lethal. RUNNING BLIND Across the country, women are being murdered, victims of a disciplined and clever killer who leaves no evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle, and no apparent motive. They are truly perfect crimes. In fact, there’s only one thing that links the victims...Jack Reacher. ECHO RUNNING Thumbing across the scorched Texas desert, Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is Carmen Greer. For Reacher, a lift comes with a hitch. Carmen’s got a wild story—about her husband, her family, and a hometown that’s pure gothic. She’s also got a plan for all of them. And now Reacher’s part of it... WITHOUT FAIL Skilled, cautious, and anonymous, Jack Reacher is perfect for the job: assassinate the vice president of the United States. In theory, that is. A female Secret Service agent wants Reacher to find the holes in her system, and fast—because a covert group already has the vice president in their sights. And they've planned for everything...except for Reacher.

  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2019-09-10

  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book With Child written by Andy Martin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by Lee Child. Andy Martin spent a year in the company of Lee Child, creator of tough-guy hero Jack Reacher. With Child is the diary of their adventures, tracking the publication and reception of Make Me, the writing of Night School at an apartment in Manhattan, the filming of Never Go Back in New Orleans, all the agony and ecstasy of the creative process and the sheer hard work of selling a bestseller. They go on the road together, from TV studios to bookstores, from Harvard to Stockholm, amid literary conferences and gunshows, rivalries and reviews ranging from adulatory to murderous. We meet fellow writers like Stephen King and David Lagercrantz and Karin Slaughter, and dissect the latest novel from Jonathan Franzen. But Martin also reaches out to Child’s legion of readers in America and around the world. He tracks down a woman in Texas whose name appears in the home invasion scene in Make Me; he goes up a mountain in Montana in search of the only reader who thinks Reacher is a “lightweight”; and he talks to obsessive fans from Europe to South Africa who find salvation or consolation in the colossal form of Jack Reacher. This compelling account of life on the road with Lee Child demonstrates that readers are just as important as writers in the making of modern fiction.

Book Noir Fiction and Film

Download or read book Noir Fiction and Film written by Lee Clark Mitchell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argument of Noir Fiction and Film is curiously counterintuitive: that in a century of hard-boiled fiction and detective films, characteristics that at first seemed trivial swelled in importance, flourishing into crucial aspects of the genre. Among these are aimless descriptions of people and places irrelevant to plot, along with detectives consisting of little more than sparkling dialogue and flippant attitudes. What weaves together such features, however, seems to be a paradox: that a genre rooted in solving a mystery, structured around the gathering of clues, must do so by misdirecting our attention, even withholding information we think we need to generate the suspense we also desire. Yet successful noir stories and films enhance that suspense through passing diversions (descriptive details and eccentric perspectives) rather than depending on the center pieces of plot alone (suspected motives or incriminating traces). As the greatest practitioners of the genre have realized, the how of detective fiction (its stylistic detours) draws us in more insistently than the what or the who (its linear advance). And the achievement of recent film noir is to make that how become the tantalizing object of our entire attention, shorn of any pretense of reading for the plot, immersing us in the diversionary delight that has animated the genre from the beginning.
