Book excerpt: A TIME 100 Must-Read Book of 2021 A New York Times Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Book of 2021 The Stonewall Book Award winner of 2022 Named a Best Book of 2021 by NPR, The New York Public Library, Publishers Weekly and more! A triumphant, genre-bending breakout novel from one of the boldest new voices in contemporary fiction. Vern—seven months pregnant and desperate to escape the strict religious compound where she was raised—flees for the shelter of the woods. There, she gives birth to twins, and plans to raise them far from the influence of the outside world. But even in the forest, Vern is a hunted woman. Forced to fight back against the community that refuses to let her go, she unleashes incredible brutality far beyond what a person should be capable of, her body wracked by inexplicable and uncanny changes. To understand her metamorphosis and to protect her small family, Vern has to face the past, and more troublingly, the future—outside the woods. Finding the truth will mean uncovering the secrets of the compound she fled but also the violent history in America that produced it. Rivers Solomon’s Sorrowland is a genre-bending work of Gothic fiction. Here, monsters aren’t just individuals, but entire nations. It is a searing, seminal book that marks the arrival of a bold, unignorable voice in American fiction.

Book Alterity and Capitalism in Speculative Fiction

Download or read book Alterity and Capitalism in Speculative Fiction written by Tomás Vergara and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speculative fiction has been traditionally studied in Marxist literary criticism, following Darko Suvin’s paradigmatic model of science fiction, according to a hierarchical division of its multiple subgenres in terms of their assumed inherent political value. By drawing on an alternative genealogy of Marxist criticism, this book presents a non-hierarchical understanding of the estrangement connecting all varieties of speculative fiction, outlining the political potential shared across the spectrum of speculative fiction, along with the specific narrative strategies by which it critically engages with its historical context of production. This study’s main point of contention is that speculative fiction performs an estrangement effect on historical reality that can potentially render visible the role of fantasies in the organisation of capitalist social practice. This narrative effect enables an estranged perspective by which the novel interprets and conceptualises historical reality in a totalising manner.

Book Financial Accounting

Download or read book Financial Accounting written by Adriana Duțescu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the principles, concepts, techniques and practical tools of financial accounting in supporting overall business decisions. Using a comprehensive theoretical framework, this book is enhanced by practical examples, exercises, chapter summaries and complex cases in each of the eleven chapters. With the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and their specific Conceptual Framework as the baseline approach, this book also highlights Romanian regulation and practice specifically. Despite the globalisation efforts, this book demonstrates that there are still discrepancies and cultural challenges and will be of interest to students and academics of financial accounting.

  • Pages : 147 pages

Download or read book Ricochet written by Seymour Mayne and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ricochet is a bilingual collection of word sonnets by one of the chief innovators of the form, Seymour Mayne. It includes three sequences of pithy and evocative poems that encapsulate moments of sharp perception while also drawing attention to instants of humour that suddenly appear in daily life. Concise and visual in effect, word sonnets are fourteen line poems, with one word per line. Frequently allusive and imagistic, they can also be irreverent and playful. While informed by other short poetry forms such as the Haiku, Mayne’s word sonnets are deeply influenced by the Talmudic tradition of maxims, proverbs and images that instruct and inform everyday life. Presented with an excellent translation of the poems into French, Ricochet is a unique volume that showcases this innovative new form. The collection also includes a short preface by the poet and an introductory essay by the translator on the challenges of translating word sonnets.
