Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The knockdown, drag-out, untold story of the other scandal that rocked Nixon’s White House, and reset the rules for crooked presidents to come—with new reporting that expands on Rachel Maddow’s Peabody Award–nominated podcast “Both a thriller and a history book, Bag Man is a triumph of storytelling.”—Preet Bharara, New York Times bestselling author of Doing Justice and host of the podcast Stay Tuned with Preet Is it possible for a sitting vice president to direct a vast criminal enterprise within the halls of the White House? To have one of the most brazen corruption scandals in American history play out while nobody’s paying attention? And for that scandal to be all but forgotten decades later? The year was 1973, and Spiro T. Agnew, the former governor of Maryland, was Richard Nixon’s second-in-command. Long on firebrand rhetoric and short on political experience, Agnew had carried out a bribery and extortion ring in office for years, when—at the height of Watergate—three young federal prosecutors discovered his crimes and launched a mission to take him down before it was too late, before Nixon’s impending downfall elevated Agnew to the presidency. The self-described “counterpuncher” vice president did everything he could to bury their investigation: dismissing it as a “witch hunt,” riling up his partisan base, making the press the enemy, and, with a crumbling circle of loyalists, scheming to obstruct justice in order to survive. In this blockbuster account, Rachel Maddow and Michael Yarvitz detail the investigation that exposed Agnew’s crimes, the attempts at a cover-up—which involved future president George H. W. Bush—and the backroom bargain that forced Agnew’s resignation but also spared him years in federal prison. Based on the award-winning hit podcast, Bag Man expands and deepens the story of Spiro Agnew’s scandal and its lasting influence on our politics, our media, and our understanding of what it takes to confront a criminal in the White House.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller that charts America’s dangerous drift into a state of perpetual war. Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan, along the way exploring Reagan's radical presidency, the disturbing rise of executive authority, the gradual outsourcing of our war-making capabilities to private companies, the plummeting percentage of American families whose children fight our constant wars for us, and even the changing fortunes of G.I. Joe. Ultimately, she shows us just how much we stand to lose by allowing the scope of American military power to overpower our political discourse. Sensible yet provocative, dead serious yet seriously funny, Drift reinvigorates a "loud and jangly" political debate about our vast and confounding national security state.

Book The Man with the Red Bag

Download or read book The Man with the Red Bag written by Eve Bunting and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right from the beginning I was suspicious of the man. Right from the minute he got on the bus. Maybe it was because he acted so strangely about the bag. But mostly it was because of the way he looked. And because my ears started tingling at the sight of him—an ancient warning of danger, not to be ignored. Six months after 9/11, everyone wanted life to return to normal. But when Charles Stavros boards the Star Tours bus, twelve-year-old Kevin Saunders is sure this exotic-looking stranger is up to no good: He sits alone. He has a bushy black mustache and sinister eyebrows. He carries a red bag with him wherever he goes—and even talks to it! Kevin confides his suspicions to Geneva, a girl he meets on the tour bus. Together they watch the man's every move. Kevin is convinced Stavros isn't a typical tourist, interested in the Great Salt Lake, the Grand Tetons, or even Yellowstone National Park. Kevin knows Stavros, red bag in hand, has something much bigger in mind, and it's up to Kevin to save the day, and maybe even the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeeves—my man, you know—is really a most extraordinary chap. So capable. Honestly, I shouldn't know what to do without him. On broader lines he's like those chappies who sit peering sadly over the marble battlements at the Pennsylvania Station in the place marked "Inquiries." You know the Johnnies I mean. You go up to them and say: "When's the next train for Melonsquashville, Tennessee?" and they reply, without stopping to think, "Two-forty-three, track ten, change at San Francisco." And they're right every time. Well, Jeeves gives you just the same impression of omniscience. As an instance of what I mean, I remember meeting Monty Byng in Bond Street one morning, looking the last word in a grey check suit, and I felt I should never be happy till I had one like it. I dug the address of the tailors out of him, and had them working on the thing inside the hour. "Jeeves," I said that evening. "I'm getting a check suit like that one of Mr. Byng's." "Injudicious, sir," he said firmly. "It will not become you." "What absolute rot! It's the soundest thing I've struck for years." "Unsuitable for you, sir." Well, the long and the short of it was that the confounded thing came home, and I put it on, and when I caught sight of myself in the glass I nearly swooned. Jeeves was perfectly right. I looked a cross between a music-hall comedian and a cheap bookie. Yet Monty had looked fine in absolutely the same stuff. These things are just Life's mysteries, and that's all there is to it. But it isn't only that Jeeves's judgment about clothes is infallible, though, of course, that's really the main thing. The man knows everything. There was the matter of that tip on the "Lincolnshire." I forget now how I got it, but it had the aspect of being the real, red-hot tabasco. "Jeeves," I said, for I'm fond of the man, and like to do him a good turn when I can, "if you want to make a bit of money have something on Wonderchild for the 'Lincolnshire.'"

Book excerpt: "The biker took the sole of his boot and stepped down on the back of Greg's head, forcing his face into the bowl. His entire head was submerged in the toilet."-- Bag Man is the story of a love-struck young man who falls victim to an unfortunate circumstance causing him to lose the love of his life, ultimately to another, more deserving man. On the day that he was planning to propose to his majestic and beautiful girlfriend Jenny, Greg made a mistake that would change his life forever. It was an honest misunderstanding, but after Keegan caught him spying on him and another woman having sex in the toilet stall, he wasn't about to let it slip. Keegan made certain that Greg's pretty girlfriend heard all about what a pervert he was. It was the beginning of Greg's life turning upside down. Keegan was a bartender and your typical successful Alpha male. He was masculine, fit and extremely sociable. Keegan dominated Greg in every respect, taking the liberty of exposing and exploiting Greg's beta male tendencies. Before he knew it, Greg was working as a slave for Keegan. He was forced to clean the pub's toilets and urinals every day, even dutifully paying a loser-tax for the privilege. His dignity and self-worth spiraled downward from there, and eventually, the bar's patrons including random strangers began taking advantage of the resident men's room cleaner, exploiting him sexually which earned Greg the nickname of Bag Man. It wasn't long before the love of Greg's life made her return. However, this time, Greg found himself on the outside looking in. Keegan and Jenny started dating, and Greg would have to settle for serving as Jenny's cuckold. Soon though he learned to enjoy his new life as both cuckold and slave to Jenny and Keegan. Jenny was a Goddess and Keegan a superior Alpha male. Both were deserving of his extreme sacrifices, dutiful obedience and unending suffering. Greg strived to be the very best public bathroom cleaner and Bag Man for Keegan. He genuinely wanted to serve his new Master. Keegan was a real man and deserved to be with Jenny more than he did. He worshipped his Goddess at every opportunity, cleaning her shoes and serving as her whipping boy. She had cruel and sadistic tendencies that Greg never knew existed but was delighted to be an outlet for all of Jenny's aggression. With just one innocent misunderstand, Greg's life changed irrevocably forever. However, through it all, he found true happiness. -- Bag Man is the 3rd erotic novel from Ms. Cordelia Livingston. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights movement was first and foremost a struggle for racial equality, but questions of gender lay deeply embedded within this struggle. Steve Estes explores key groups, leaders, and events in the movement to understand how activists used race and manhood to articulate their visions of what American society should be. Estes demonstrates that, at crucial turning points in the movement, both segregationists and civil rights activists harnessed masculinist rhetoric, tapping into implicit assumptions about race, gender, and sexuality. Estes begins with an analysis of the role of black men in World War II and then examines the segregationists, who demonized black male sexuality and galvanized white men behind the ideal of southern honor. He then explores the militant new models of manhood espoused by civil rights activists such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and groups such as the Nation of Islam, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Black Panther Party. Reliance on masculinist organizing strategies had both positive and negative consequences, Estes concludes. Tracing these strategies from the integration of the U.S. military in the 1940s through the Million Man March in the 1990s, he shows that masculinism rallied men to action but left unchallenged many of the patriarchal assumptions that underlay American society.

Book Bringing Home the Birkin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider's hilarious, whirlwind account of his years spent globe-trotting in search of the holy grail of handbags: the Birkin For more than twenty years, the Hermès Birkin bag has been the iconic symbol of fashion, luxury, and wealth. Though the bag is often seen dangling from the arms of celebrities, there is a fabled waiting list of more than two years to buy one from Hermès, and the average fashionista has a better chance of climbing Mount Everest in Prada pumps than of possessing one of these coveted carryalls. Unless, of course, she happens to know Michael Tonello . . . Michael's newfound career started with an impulsive move to Barcelona, a vanished job assignment, no work visa, and an Hermès scarf sold on eBay to generate some quick cash. But soon the resourceful Michael discovered the truth about the waiting list and figured out the secret to getting Hermès to part with one of these precious bags. Millions of dollars worth of Birkins later, Michael had become one of eBay's most successful entrepreneurs—and a Robin Hood to thousands of desperate rich women. With down-to-earth wit, Michael chronicles the unusual ventures that took him to nearly every continent, from eBay to Paris auction house and into the lives of celebrities and poseurs. Flirting with danger, Michael recounts the heady rush of hand delivering his first big score to famed songwriter Carole Bayer Sager in Paris; how he had to hire thugs to rescue a bag that one of his "shoppers" held for ransom; and the story of the Oscar-worthy performances that allowed him to snag "reserved" bags from other, less dogged Birkin seekers. Whether he's relating his wining and dining, buying and selling, dodging and weaving, laughing and crying, or schmoozing and stammering, Michael is a master raconteur who weaves together tales of hunting Birkins in the world's most posh locales, memories of meals that would make any gastronome salivate, anecdotes of obsessed collectors with insatiable desires, and sweetly intimate stories about his family, friends, and finding true love. The result is a memoir that is distinctive, fun, page-turning, and as addictive as its namesake.

Book Stu Mead Frank Gaard The Immortal Man Bag Journal of Art

Download or read book Stu Mead Frank Gaard The Immortal Man Bag Journal of Art written by Stu Mead and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man Bag grew out of the Artpolicecomics magazine project that had been publishing out of the community of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which fell victim in the late 1980s to the culture-wars climate of censorship. In response, two of the protagonists of Artpolicecomics, Stu Mead (born 1955) and Frank Gaard (born 1944), got together on a new zine, this time deliberately thumbing their noses at political correctness and decency, fixating on "sick sex and decadence" in an underground "men's magazine focused on deviated sexuality," as Gaard puts it. Stu Mead & Frank Gaard: The Immortal Man Bag Journal of Art collects all printed editions of the zine, along with Man Bag No. 6, released for the first time. In his introduction, Gaard offers an unvarnished, conversational, infectious history of Man Bag, supplemented with extracts from Stu Mead's diary.
