Book Guarding the Golden Door

Download or read book Guarding the Golden Door written by Roger Daniels and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2005-01-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As renowned historian Roger Daniels shows in this brilliant new work, America's inconsistent, often illogical, and always cumbersome immigration policy has profoundly affected our recent past. The federal government's efforts to pick and choose among the multitude of immigrants seeking to enter the United States began with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Conceived in ignorance and falsely presented to the public, it had undreamt of consequences, and this pattern has been rarely deviated from since. Immigration policy in Daniels' skilled hands shows Americans at their best and worst, from the nativist violence that forced Theodore Roosevelt's 1907 "gentlemen's agreement" with Japan to the generous refugee policies adopted after World War Two and throughout the Cold War. And in a conclusion drawn from today's headlines, Daniels makes clear how far ignorance, partisan politics, and unintended consequences have overtaken immigration policy during the current administration's War on Terror. Irreverent, deeply informed, and authoritative, Guarding the Golden Door presents an unforgettable interpretation of modern American history.

Book excerpt: Relatives of three immigrants from Eastern Europe await their arrival in New York in 1893. When passengers from their ship are ferried from Ellis Island to the Battery, the three immigrants are nowhere to be found. Ship line officials inform the relatives that the three had died at sea and their bodies dropped overboard, but how they died was not known. Flashbacks describe the lives of the three persons up to the time of their deaths, revealing their character and behaviors that might influence what led to their deaths. The grieving relatives are determined to find out how they died in order to have closure and peace of mind. Sara Newman, the sister of one the deceased, locates the ship's captain and gets his explanation of what happened to her brother and the others. She then finds the ship's purser, who tells her a different story about what took place. Later, she speaks to a neighbor's sister, who had been on the ship, and gets a third account of how the three immigrants died. Being unable to achieve closure, Sara's family hires an immigration lawyer to investigate and determine what the real explanation was for how the deaths happened. The lawyer's research leads to a court hearing that uncovers the facts, but not before some intriguing developments.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Rule Series: The Golden Door Book; A School Reader This Series of books embodies a graded system of moral instruction. The method of instruction involved in the Scheme is the indirect method. It introduces the pupil, in a concrete and interesting manner, to the subject matter of morals, by means of fairy tale, myth, fable, allegory, parable, legend, stories of real life, of heroes and heroines, biography, and historical incident. This method was adopted in preference to the more formal, direct, and didactic methods, because of an induction based on a questionnaire circulated among the teachers of ten cities, nearly ninety-five percent of whom favored the indirect method. This induction is supported, also, by investigations relating to the moral nature in the field of child psychology, and the psychology of the first years of adolescence. Book excerpt: From prize-winning and international bestselling author Elodie Harper, the second book in the Wolf Den Trilogy follows Amara as she escapes her life as a slave in the city’s most notorious brothel, the Wolf Den. Her survival depends on the affections of a man she might not know as well as she once thought . . . The life of a courtesan in Pompeii is glamorous yet perilous. At night in the home her patron bought for her, the house with the golden door, Amara’s dreams are haunted by her past. She longs for her sisterhood of friends—the women at the brothel she was forced to leave behind—and worse, finds herself pursued by the cruel and vindictive man who once owned her. To be truly free, she will need to be as ruthless as he is. Amara knows her existence in Pompeii is subject to Venus, the goddess of love. Yet finding love may prove to be the most dangerous act of all. Readers of Circe, The Song of Achilles, and other novels based on Greek mythology, as well as fans of inspiring feminist historical fiction exploring the worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome, will love Harper's acclaimed Wolf Den Trilogy. Book excerpt: A boy faces amnesia as he seeks to end the monstrous threat to his city in this finale to a fantasy trilogy by a New York Times–bestselling author. Three magic Doors are the only way in and out of the walled city of Weld. The golden Door is grand and majestic—a Door for heroes. The silver Door hints at mystery and knowledge—a door for schemers. But the plain wooden Door has always held the most appeal for Rye and his friend Sonia. And now, at last, they have the chance to open it. The city of Weld is under attack by skimmers, flying beasts that terrorize the night. If Rye and Sonia can’t discover the enemy sending the skimmers in time, Weld has no hope. Twice before, Rye and Sonia left Weld on a quest to save it. Twice before, they failed. Now there’s just one Door left—one last chance to save the people of Weld. Rye and Sonia know everything depends on them. But nothing can prepare them for the horror that waits behind the wooden Door. Praise for The Third Door “Readers who have come to love the plucky Rye and determined Sonia will be eager for this story. . . . The plot is tied up in an unexpected but very satisfying way. Fans of Rodda’s Deltora Quest series will be thrilled by the tie-ins here. New fans can enjoy this installment without any prior knowledge of the land of Deltora; though they’ll have a richer experience if they’ve read the first two volumes.” —Booklist
