Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seattles private clubs, most of which continue to serve their members today over 100 years after their founding, were all established within walking distance of each other downtown. The University Club, College Club, Rainier Club, and Arctic Club were social outlets for privileged men of the community, while the Seattle Tennis Club and Washington Athletic Club provided an athletic outlet for members. Womens clubs such as the Sunset Club, Womans Century Club, and Womens University Club gave upper-class women the opportunity to widen their knowledge through classes and good works in their community, allowing them social interaction with women of like mind and status. Much of Seattles history is linked to these clubs, and their archives hold the key to what club life gave to its members so long ago.

Book excerpt: Analyzing how tennis turned pro The arrival of the Open era in 1968 was a watershed in the history of tennis--the year that marked its advent as a professionalized sport. Merging wide-angle history with individual stories of players and off-the-court figures, Greg Ruth charts tennis’s evolution into the game we watch today. His vivid account moves from the cloistered world of nineteenth-century lawn tennis through the longtime amateur-professional divide and the battles over commercialization that raged from the 1920s until 1968. From there, Ruth details the post-1968 expansion of the game as it was transformed by bankable superstars, a popular women’s tour, rival governing bodies, and sponsorship money. What emerges is a fascinating history of the economics and politics that made tennis a decisive, if unlikely, force in the creation of modern-day sports entertainment. Comprehensive and engaging, Tennis tells the interlocking stories of the figures and factors that birthed the professional game.

As a tennis instructor, Tracy believes tennis should always be FUN! This philosophy has driven his 35-year teaching career, and now it's on paper for all tennis players. Tracy also shares his tennis drills so other tennis pros can use this book as a framework for their own lessons. This book is a great gift for tennis players. It is the perfect tennis gift for everyone on your league tennis team, your doubles partner, your pro, family members, and anyone who loves tennis.

Book Tennis and America Thank You

Download or read book Tennis and America Thank You written by Freddie Botur and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Kramer: Freddie, nobody wants us. 1966 In 1966, when I had the Thirty-Fourth Street armory, Jack Kramer, the world famous player and promoter, approached me and asked me to put up fifteen thousand dollars in prize money for a tournament he wanted to organize early in 1967. He had eight professionals set to go but no place to host the tournament and no prize money to offer. Freddie, nobody wants us, Kramer said. Madison Square Garden does not want us. White Plains does not want us. I could not believe that a great and famous player like Jack Kramer was coming to me, an unknown immigrant, to ask if I would be interested in promoting the tournament. I thought about it for a little less than a minute, knew instantly that we could accommodate nearly four thousand people in the armory, and determined that I would make it happen. A few days later, I received a letter of confirmation from his manager, Mr. Wills. The players he was proposing were the most famous names in the game. We just needed to come up with the prize money. Since we did not have anyone who could sponsor us, I put up five thousand dollars myself and asked two of my friendsLieberman, vice president of a gas company, and Zdenek Capek, the engineer friend who helped me design the roll-up mats for the armoryto invest five thousand dollars each. I can still name the singles draw from the top down: Rod Laver, Fred Stolle, Dennis Ralston, Butch Buchholz, Pancho Gonzalez, Pierre Barthes, Mike Davis, Andres Gimeno, Pancho Segura, and Cliff Drysdale. No one was willing to underwrite the event.

Book The United States Tennis Association

Download or read book The United States Tennis Association written by Warren F. Kimball and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Tennis Association is an in-depth look at the history of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and how this sports organization has helped cultivate and organize tennis in the United States over the past 135 years. Starting as a group of elite white men from country clubs in the Northeast, the organization has become the largest tennis association in the world, with women in top leadership positions and an annual revenue of well over $300 million. The USTA was key in establishing the Open Era in tennis in 1968, when professionals began competing with amateurs in Grand Slam events; for expanding the game in the United States during the 1970s tennis boom; and for establishing the U.S. Open as one of the most prestigious and largest-attended sports events in the world. Unique among sports-governing bodies, the USTA is a mostly volunteer-run organization that, along with a paid professional staff, manages and governs tennis at the local level across the United States and owns and operates the U.S. Open. The association participates directly in the International Tennis Federation, manages U.S. participation in international tennis competitions (Fed Cup and Davis Cup), and interacts with professional tennis within the United States. The story of how tennis is managed by the nation's largest cadre of volunteers in any sport is one of sports' best untold stories. With access to the private records of the USTA, Warren F. Kimball tells an engaging and rich history of how tennis has been managed and governed in the United States.
