Book excerpt: Professor Davidson has given us in this book an interesting general summary of the Stoic philosophy. Students who are familiar with the literature of the subject will not find much that is new to them in this summary; and perhaps the interests even of the general reader would have been better consulted if the author had gone more into detail on many of the interesting points that have recently been discussed. In particular, we should have been glad to see a fuller statement of the parts played by the various members of the Stoic school in the formulation of the creed. From the point of view of the exact history of philosophy, we should have preferred to see less use made of the late Stoics and more use made of the fragments of Zeno, Cleanthes, and Chrysippus; for there can be no doubt that these were the formative thinkers of the school, and that the members of the Middle and Later Stoa did little but repeat the older arguments, enforcing them by apt illustration and clever rhetoric, but often, also, losing consistency by borrowing ideas from other schools. Probably one might go further and say that all the main ideas of Stoicism are to be found already in Zeno -- that the task of Cleanthes was simply that of systematizing, and the task of Chrysippus, that of finding new arguments for old conclusions. The general relation of the main thinkers of the school is correctly stated by Prof. Davidson, but in a book of this size room might surely have been found for a more detailed treatment of the question. The object of the book, however, is different. Its object is to present Stoicism as a single closed system of ideas, important by reason of its high moral tone and its influence on several successive generations. The author has achieved this task in a distinctly interesting way. He has chosen characteristic and forcible passages from Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, and has given us a fairly complete picture of the Stoic beliefs, especially on the ethical and theological sides. The book also contains much shrewd and sensible criticism, of which pp. 99-104 on the Stoic cosmology are perhaps the most favorable specimen.--The Classical Review, Vol. 21

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stoic Creed These chapters are a contribution towards the exposition and just appreciation of Stoicism-which, whatever its defects, was a system of lofty principles, illustrated in the lives of many noble men. The subject has perennial fascination; and there are not wanting signs that it appeals with special attractiveness to cultured minds at the present day. It has both speculative and practical value ; its analysis of human nature and its theory of knowledge, no less than its ethical teaching, giving insight into the problems of the universe and the right mode of guiding life. As an important stage in the march of philosophical thought, and as a luminous chapter in the history of natural theology, it solicits our attention, and will repay our study. Ample quotations are designedly made from the Stoic writers themselves and from ancient Greek and Latin expositions. Responsibility for the translation of most of the passages must be accepted by myself. One exception, however, has to be made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stoic Warriors explores the relationship between soldiers and Stoic philosophy, exploring what Stoicism actually is, the role it plays in the character of the military (both ancient and modern), and its powerful value as a philosophy of life. Marshalling anecdotes from military history--ranging from ancient Greek wars to World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq--Sherman illuminates the military mind and uses it as a window on the virtues of the Stoic philosophy. Indeed this is a perceptive investigation of what makes Stoicism so compelling not only as a guiding principle for the military, but as a philosophy for anyone facing the hardships of life.

Book excerpt: Memorize the Stoics! The Ancient Art of Memory Meets the Timeless Art of Living. The title says it all! Extolling the powers of God-given human reason, Stoic philosophers such as Roman knight Musonius Rufus and his student, the former slave, Epictetus, developed powerful practical lessons for living tranquil, virtuous, loving lives. These lessons were praised by such early Church Fathers as Justin Martyr and Origen. Epictetus's Handbook was later adapted as a moral guidebook for monks. A millennium later, Thomas Aquinas mined the Stoic Seneca's lessons on anger, gratitude, patience, and more for use in his Summa Theologiae. And in our own day, the psychological and moral teachings of the Stoics constitute an "art of living" that fairly cries out to act as compass for the nearly rudderless boat of our disordered contemporary world. But still, it is hard to live out important life lessons if you cannot remember them! In those same early centuries before and after Christ, Greeks like Simonides and Romans like Cicero championed a specialized "art of memory." Early Church Fathers such as Augustine and Jerome championed this also, as did, centuries later, Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. The unique virtue of Kevin Vost's book is its wedding of the ancient art of memory to the timeless art of living. In his Handbook, Epictetus exhorts us to "remember" his lessons a full dozen times, and in his own book Vost shows us how to do just this, thereby opening our eyes to unrecognized powers of imagination and memory, and to unrecognized capacities for controlling thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Even so, the Stoics would not mind at all if you found this exercise of imagination and intellect a rather fun thing to do. Enjoy!

Download or read book Studies in Stoicism written by P. A. Brunt and published by Oxford University Press (UK). This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume fulfills one of Peter Brunt's (1917 - 2005) last wishes: a collection of his most important papers in the area of scholarship that had occupied him in his earliest years of research, and which largely absorbed his attention after his retirement from the Camden Chair of Roman History at Oxford University in 1982. Brunt was interested primarily in Stoicism in the Roman period, and his chief concern was the practical influence of its ethical teaching on political and social life. Although his investigations were historical, they required a complete mastery of the Stoic texts and doctrine. Basing his work almost entirely on the ancient sources, Brunt provides the most complete account and comparison available today not only of the ideas of the Roman Stoic moralists, but also of the political philosophy of the Greek founders of the Stoa. He believed that the ideas of the Stoics of the Roman period were essentially continuous with the thinking of the founders, and he did not accept that the concern with practical everyday morality in later Stoicism was a new development. Studies in Stoicism contains six unpublished and seven republished essays, the latter incorporating additions and changes which Brunt wished to be made. The papers have been integrated and arranged in roughly chronological order and by subject matter, with an accessible lecture to the Oxford Philological Society serving as Brunt's own introduction.
