Book excerpt: Somehow, Charlie's found himself back in the suburb he grew up desperate to leave, playing the same old records to groups of pissed-up punters at weddings and 40th birthday parties. He loves his wife and their new baby, but it wasn't meant to be like this. Early one morning he learns that his brother has been involved in a fatal accident. It seems that Leo, a seasoned Tom Waits impersonator, has been running a dodgy detective agency on the side. His last case involved a missing dog. As Charlie picks up the investigation he discovers a trail which leads uncomfortably close to home... With his trademark ability to skewer people, with all their vanities and weaknesses, to the page, Andrew Holmes delivers a darkly funny and compelling detective story that shows just how hard it is to escape the past.

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Download or read book Rain Steam and Speed written by Allissa Oldenberg and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owen Linton-House grows up living his parents' hopes and dreams, but when he is expelled from school, he leaves home in shame, the day before his eighteenth birthday. Living in a squat in Battersea, he rescues an Afghan Hound, becomes addicted to heroin, and ends up smuggling drugs out of Amsterdam for a Russian cartel. When MI6 make him an offer he cannot refuse, Owen starts to live out a real-life spy thriller, caught up in an international drugs network, living and working in Canada and Afghanistan, trying to find the source of the drugs, how they are brought into the country, and who is responsible. Throughout his adventure, Owen is searching for love, for his own identity, and for a measure of redemption, vowing to return home when he is thirty. It is his sister, Helen, who writes his story. Owen's adventure is framed by rain, snow and scorching heat. He is introduced to Mayakovsky's 'The Bathhouse,' to steam baths, and to steamy relationships. He is drawn into the shady world of drugs, of cannabis, heroin, ecstasy, and amphetamines. In spite of his mistakes, it is hard not to feel compassion for Owen, and "Rain, Steam and Speed" prompts the reader to ponder if we can ever really break free from our pasts, our parents' expectations, the consequences of our poor choices, and our addictions.
Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."
Download or read book Unlikely Heroes written by Jennifer S. Holland and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her heartwarming New York Times bestsellers Unlikely Friendships and last year’s Unlikely Loves, Jennifer Holland revealed the surprising emotional bonds that exist between animals of different species. Her books spent dozens of weeks on bestseller lists and caught the attention of major media from CBS This Morning to USA Today. Why? Because she opened our eyes to the rich inner lives of animals, showing us that the power of love and friendship is not for humans only. In Unlikely Heroes, Ms. Holland uncovers and celebrates yet another side of animals that we often think belongs primarily to people—heroism, that indefinable quality of going above and beyond, often for altruistic reasons, often at great personal risk. These 37 inspiring true tales show animals whose quick acts have saved lives, like the pod of dolphins who protected swimmers in New Zealand from a great white shark by forming a screen around them. There are stories of animals who simply and unselfishly give, like Rojo the llama, who shines his very special light of lovingkindness on the elderly patients in an Oregon rehab center. And there are compelling stories of heroic resilience: like Naki’o, the abandoned puppy who lost all four paws to frostbite but found the grit not only to overcome that terrible hardship but to reclaim the joy of life—that’s him, smiling on the cover of the book.
