Download or read book Crashing the Tea Party written by Paul Street and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tea Party has been the most high profile and controversial social movement in the US of recent times. But real analysis of the Tea Party remains slim - is it a genuine social movement or a topdown interest group created by the Republican Party and corporate funding? Crashing the Tea Party is based on first-hand observation of local Tea Party chapters, and undertakes a critical journalistic and scholarly examination from the national and local level. Paul Street and Anthony DiMaggio provide a carefully documented account which challenges conventional wisdoms. Crashing the Tea Party fills the gap in public understanding about this particular social movement, and how social movements in general relate today to the ideologies of left and right and the mass media.

Download or read book Jackson s LL D written by Andrew Mcfarland Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jackson's LL. D: A Tempest in a Tea-Pot As we run over the list of the Presidents of the United States, we see that nine of them have received the degree of LL.D. From Harvard College.1 Four of them Monroe, J ack son, Grant, and Hayes - were in otfice at the time when the degree was conferred. When Washington visited Cambridge in 1789, he had already been honored by the college with a degree. So also at that date had-john Adams and Thomas Jefferson. It was not until Monroe visited Cambridge in 1817 that the authorities of the college were brought face to face with the question of how a President upon whom a degree had not already been bestowed should be honored by the college. The precedent then established of conferring a degree as a part of the ceremony of reception has apparently been accepted as the basis for a custom. If Cleveland did not receive a degree in 1886, it was because he was unwilling to do so. The name of mckinley does not appear in the honorary roll of the Harvard Quinquennial, because his untimely death at Buffalo prevented the promised Visit to Massachusetts. Download or read book Wingnuts written by Perseus and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wingnuts exist on the extreme edges of the political spectrum. They're the professional polarizers and the unhinged activists, the hardcore haters and the paranoid conspiracy theorists. They're people who always try to divide us instead of unite us. And at a time when the fringe is blurring with the base, they've hijacked American politics. The Obama era has been a boom-time for Wingnuts, kicked off by a financial collapse and the election America's first black president. For some, losing an election feels like living under tyranny. John Avlon tracks down preachers who pray for the president's death, goes inside the growing "Hatriot" militia movement, and identifies the fright-wing swamp where the Obama "Birthers" and the Bush-era "9/11 Truthers" bubble up. Wingnuts echo earlier fear-fueled movements in American history. But bolstered by the rise of hyper-partisan media, the Wingnut echo chamber is more influential than ever before and it has led directly to the division and dysfunction in Congress. Avlon asserts that the time has come for the moderate majority of Americans to straighten their civic backbone and hold the extremes accountable while restoring a sense of perspective to our politics.
Download or read book Asian American Playwrights written by Miles Liu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, Asian American drama made its debut with the spotlight firmly on the lives and struggles of Asians in North America, rather than on the cultures and traditions of the Asian homeland. Today, Asian American playwrights continue to challenge the limitations of established theatrical conventions and direct popular attention toward issues and experiences that might otherwise be ignored or marginalized. While Asian American literature came into full bloom in the last 25 years, Asian American drama has yet to receive the kind of critical attention it warrants. This reference book serves as a versatile vehicle for exploring the field of Asian American drama from its recorded conception to its present stage. Included are alphabetically arranged entries for 52 Asian American dramatists of origins from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and China. Each entry includes relevant biographical information that contextualizes the works of a playwright, an interpretive description of selected plays that spotlights recurring themes and plots, a summary of the playwright's critical reception, and a bibliography of primary and secondary works. The entries are written by expert contributors and reflect the ethnic diversity of the Asian American community. The volume closes with a selected, general bibliography, which includes anthologies, scholarly studies, and periodicals.
