Book excerpt: Nostromo unfolds in the fictional Latin American republic of Costaguana, where the English Gould family has controlled the country's sole natural resource, a silver mine, for three generations. They are allowed to manage the mine as long as they pay the current government sufficient bribes. As the country teeters on the brink of yet another revolution, the English family no longer trusts that they can retain control of the mine. Instead, they entrust their servant, "Nostromo," with the task of safely transporting the silver treasure beyond the country's borders on a large barge. Nostromo is Joseph Conrad's [1857-1924] most political novel, written in 1904, containing prophetic insights into our era of global capitalism. This breathtaking maritime adventure is grounded in a true story Conrad encountered during his time as a sailor in the British Empire. JOSEPH CONRAD [1857–1924] was born in Ukraine to Polish parents, went to sea at the age of seventeen, and ended his career as a captain in the English merchant navy. His most famous work is the novella Heart of Darkness [1899], adapted to film by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979 as Apocalypse Now.

Book excerpt: Originally published as a serial, Nostromo is set in a fictional South American country where the outbreak of civil war puts the mining town of Sulaco in turmoil. Giovanni Battista Fidanza, known as Nostromo, is given the task of smuggling out a large amount of silver to keep it from the revolutionaries. Conrad was inspired to write the book when he read, in a sailor’s memoir, the tale of a man who singlehandedly stole a boatload of silver. He had first heard the same story a quarter of a century earlier as a young sailor. Nostromo has met with critical acclaim: it is often regarded as Conrad’s greatest novel and Francis Scott Fitzgerald said he would rather have written Nostromo than any other novel. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Nostromo A Tale of the Seaboard

Download or read book Nostromo A Tale of the Seaboard written by Joseph Conrad and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard" is a novel by Joseph Conrad, created in 1904 and set in the fictitious South American republic of "Costaguana." The inspiration for the story came from Conrad's young years. At the age of seventeen, when he served aboard a ship in the Gulf of Mexico, the future writer heard a story of a man who had stolen, single-handedly, a whole lighter full of silver. Conrad returned to the motif 25 years later, as he accidentally bought a diary in a used-book shop in which the author related how he worked for years aboard a schooner whose master claimed to be that very thief who had stolen the silver.

Set in the fictional South American country of Costaguana, the novel follows the intertwined lives of various characters as they navigate the political upheaval and societal changes of the late 19th century. Conrad's intricate narrative style and vivid descriptions create a rich tapestry of characters and settings, immersing the reader in a world of adventure and intrigue. The novel's exploration of power dynamics and the human psyche makes it a timeless and thought-provoking read. Joseph Conrad, a Polish-British author and former sailor, drew on his own experiences at sea to craft Nostromo. His deep understanding of the complexities of human nature and the effects of colonization is evident in the novel's nuanced characters and intricate plot. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature.

Download or read book Lord Jim and Nostromo written by Joseph Conrad and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as two of the 100 best novels of all time Nostromo Originally published in 1904, Nostromo is considered by many to be Conrad's supreme achievement. Set in the imaginary South American republic of Costaguana, the novel reveals the effects of unbridled greed and imperialist interests on many different lives. Although each character's potential for good is ultimately corrupted, Nostromo underscores Conrad's belief in fidelity, moral discipline, and the need for human communion. The author himself described the book as 'an intense creative effort on what I suppose will remain my largest canvas.' 'Conrad endeavored to create a great, massive, multiphase symbol that would render his total vision of the world, his sense of individual destiny, his sense of man's place in nature, his sense of history and society,' observed Robert Penn Warren. 'Nostromo is the most strikingly modern of Conrad's novels,' said V. S. Pritchett. 'It is pervaded by a profound, even morbid sense of insecurity which is the very spirit of our age.' This volume is the companion to the acclaimed multipart series aired on Masterpiece Theatre. Lord Jim Lord Jim is a classic story of one man's tragic failure and eventual redemption, told under the circumstances of high adventure at the margins of the known world which made Conrad's work so immediately popular. But it is also the book in which its author, through a brilliant adaptation of his stylistic apparatus to his obsessive moral, psychological and political concerns, laid the groundwork for the modern novel as we know it.

Book The Secret History of Costaguana

Download or read book The Secret History of Costaguana written by Juan Gabriel Vasquez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A potent mixture of history, fiction and literary gamesmanship." —Los Angeles Times "A cunning tribute to a classic." —Wall Street Journal "[A] post-modern literary revenge story.” —The New York Times An ingenious novel of historical invention from the global literary star author of The Sound of Things Falling. On the day of Joseph Conrad's death in 1924, the Colombian-born José Altamirano begins to write and cannot stop. Many years before, he confessed to Conrad his life's every delicious detail—from his country's heroic revolutions to his darkest solitary moments. Those intimate recollections became Nostromo, a novel that solidified Conrad’s fame and turned Altamirano’s reality into a work of fiction. Now Conrad is dead, but the slate is by no means clear—Nostromo will live on and Altamirano must write himself back into existence. As the destinies of real empires collide with the murky realities of imagined ones, Vásquez takes us from a flourishing twentieth-century London to the lawless fury of a blooming Panama and back in a labyrinthine quest to reclaim the past—of both a country and a man.
