Book Psychologists in Word and Image

Download or read book Psychologists in Word and Image written by Nicholas Wade and published by Bradford Books. This book was released on 1995-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These perceptual portraits of more than 100 thinkers who have fashioned our understanding of mind and behavior provide an alternative view of the history of psychology. Francis Bacon, René Descartes, Pierre Broca, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Ruth Benedict, Allen Newell, David Marr and scores of others whose ideas have made psychology an empirical discipline emerge from motifs specifically drawn by the author or derived from a figure or text in one of the portrayed person's books, or an apparatus he or she invented. The treatment of portrait/motifs often challenges the viewer to discern the faces embedded in them and always tells us more than how these students of mind looked: these portraits reflect their thoughts and lead us to forage further into their lives and legacies. The portraits and motifs have been manipulated in a variety of ways, using graphic and photographic procedures. They are arranged in order of birth date in a format of one page of descriptive text facing a full-page perceptual portrait. The text presents a brief synopsis of the person portrayed, that person's ideas, and the source of both the portrait and the motif. Interrelations between people are stressed, bringing to light common threads that run through the work of particular groups. --From publisher's description.

Book Social Psychology of Pictures

Download or read book Social Psychology of Pictures written by Pascal Moliner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We see and represent our social environment not as it is, but as we believe it to be. This is the thesis defended in this book, supported by conceptual elements and illustrated by numerous examples drawn from anthropology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology and social psychology. These examples show that people sharing different beliefs about the same object produce different images of that object (such as drawings or photos), and highlight that such people interpret the same image of this object differently. Finally, they show that, when these people communicate through images, they find it difficult to understand each other. On the basis of these observations, the book proposes a psychosocial theory of the link between beliefs and iconography. This book is mainly intended for students and researchers in the humanities and social sciences, interested in the problematic of images. However, it will also be of interest to communication practitioners and the general public.

Download or read book Educational Psychology written by L.S. Vygotsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-08-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this classic book was first published in 1926, L.S. Vygotsky was well on his way to becoming one of the leading intellectuals in Russia. His study of the psychology of education led him to believe that the child should be the main figure in the educational process - and the efforts of the teacher should be directed toward organizing, not dictating, the child's development. "The educational process must be based on the student's individual activity ..." he states in Educational Psychology, "... and the art of education should involve nothing more than guiding and monitoring this activity." At a time when most education consisted of rote memorization and thwacks across the wrist with a ruler, these ideas were considered quite radical. Today's educators can find much that is of use in the pages of Educational Psychology. Vygotsky addresses many issues that are still relevant in the 1990s - abnormal social behavior, the nurturing of creativity and reasoning, problems with attention and memory - in a bold and opinionated fashion that is sure to delight educators as well as lovers of classical Russian writing. Psychologists will also find the book useful for its fascinating glimpses into the study of psychology in the early twentieth century.
