Book excerpt: The study of grammaticalization raises a number of fundamental theoretical issues pertaining to the relation of langue and parole, creativity and automatic coding, synchrony and diachrony, categoriality and continua, typological characteristics and language-specific forms, etc., and therefore challenges some of the basic tenets of twentieth century linguistics. This two-volume work presents a number of diverse theoretical viewpoints on grammaticalization and gives insights into the genesis, development, and organization of grammatical categories in a number of language world-wide, with particular attention to morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic issues. The papers in Volume I are divided into two sections, the first concerned with general method, and the second with issues of directionality. Those in Volume II are divided into five sections: verbal structure, argument structure, subordination, modality, and multiple paths of grammaticalization.

The introduction provides an invaluable guide to researchers using archives, including a summary of the relevant legislation and a detailed description of the usual holdings of county and other local authority record offices.

Book The Ancient Library of Qumran

Download or read book The Ancient Library of Qumran written by Frank Moore Cross and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first publication of this book in 1959 it has become a classic: It is a sober and objective account by a scholar who has taken a leading part in the editing and evaluation of the Qumran texts. The book opens with an account of the history of the finds, and each subsequent chapter deals with a single but major area of scroll research. Each records an attempt to achieve in a given area a synthesis, or at least a systematic interpretation, of the facts now available. Old and new, published and unpublished data are drawn upon. For this revised edition, the history of the finds has been updated to the present, and a final chapter has been added detailing some of the author's views of and reactions to recent discussions and publications not found in the earlier editions.

Download or read book Visions Of Linus Pauling written by Christoffer Eric Petersen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His life thrown into chaos by the death of his father in his youth, Linus Pauling persevered through an impoverished childhood to become one of the great scientists and humanitarians of the 20th century. In a stunningly original examination of the two-time Nobel Laureate, Oregon State University archivist Chris Petersen touches upon the major eras of Pauling's life and dials into specific episodes, themes, accomplishments, and failures at a level of detail that has not been put forth elsewhere. Topics exclusively covered here include Pauling's generative process as author of the groundbreaking text The Nature of the Chemical Bond; the colorful history of the Linus Pauling Institute; his symbiotic relationship with the W H Freeman & Co. publishing house; two entirely separate clashes with the United States Senate and the Soviet Academy of Science; and the story of his brilliant and troubled son Peter. Interspersed throughout the book are light pieces that narrate humorous moments in Pauling's life and other vignettes that lend insight into his seemingly maverick personality. The culmination of 15 years of research, Visions of Linus Pauling is a magisterial piece of work, equivalent to previously unseen footage of a blockbuster movie. The Pauling Blog: https://paulingblog.wordpress.com/2022/11/03/we-wrote-a-book/

Book Essays in the History of Linguistics

Download or read book Essays in the History of Linguistics written by E. F. K. Koerner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume follows the author's tradition of bringing together at certain intervals selections of articles which more often than not had previously been published in not easily accessible places, or which had not been published before. These papers do not typically represent mere reprints but in most instances thoroughly revised versions. This volume contains twelve articles organized under three headings, "Programmatic Papers in the History of Linguistics," "Studies in Linguistic Historiography," and "Sketches historiographical and (auto)biographical," plus as an appendix a complete list of Zellig Harris' writings as an illustration of Koerner's penchant for and belief in the importance of good bibliographies as a basis for historical research. While the first two sections, which take up the bulk of the volume, either show the author as an historian engage or demonstrate his work as a historiographer of 19th and 20th century linguistics, the third section is much shorter and less heavy going. Indexes of Biographical Names and of Subjects, Terms & Languages round out the volume, which also contains a number of portraits of linguists and other illustrations.

Book Spain and Portugal in the New World 1492 1700

Download or read book Spain and Portugal in the New World 1492 1700 written by Lyle N. McAlister and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish and Portuguese expansion substantially altered the social, political, and economic contours of the modern world. In his book, Lyle McAlister provides a narrative and interpretive history of the exploration and settlement of the Americas by Spain and Portugal. McAlister divides this period (and the book) into three parts. First, he describes the formation of Old World societies with particular attention to those features that influenced the directions and forms of overseas expansion. Second, he traces the dynamic processes of conquest and colonization that between 1492 and about 1570 firmly established Spanish and Portuguese dominion in the New World. The third part deals with colonial growth and consolidation down to about 1700. McAlister's main themes are: the post-conquest territorial expansion that established the limits of what later came to be called Latin America, the emergence of distinctively Spanish and Portuguese American societies and economies, the formation of systems of imperial control and exploitation, and the ways in which conflicts between imperial and American interests were reconciled. This comprehensive history, with its extensive bibliographic essay and attention to historiographic issues, will be a standard reference for students and scholars of the period.
