Introducing a more international thrust to the gallery and demonstrating a keen business acumen, Goudstikker became one of the most successful art dealers and tastemakers in Amsterdam between the Wars. He entertained lavishly and highlighted his wares in his country homes and gallery while also developing relationships with collectors and museums at home and abroad. Tragically, Goudstikker died in flight from the Nazis in 1940, and his enormous collection of art, including more than 1,200 Old Master and nineteenth-century paintings, was confiscated by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. Not until 2006 was a portion of this looted art returned to Goudstikker's heirs by the Dutch government. Featuring some 200 color illustrations, this book examines Goudstikker's legacy, reveals the dramatic story of the seizure of his art, and discusses the legal case that finally brought its restitution. It analyses national-socialist attempts to denationalize the archaeologies of European nations by creating a new unifying European archaeology on a racial basis. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, archaeology began to develop into an important force behind processes of nation building. At the same time, structures of transnational academic collaboration contributed strongly to the internal dynamics of the research field, which was primarily organized on a national basis. In those European countries that were confronted with national-socialist occupation and repression between 1939 and 1945, these transnational archaeological networks were to prove crucial for the development of national-socialist archaeological policies. This volume will reveal how national-socialist archaeology was to an extent valued positively in its time as highly innovative, even influencing the archaeology of non-occupied countries. Collectors reluctantly agreed to one-sided sales of masterpieces at ludicrously low prices in exchange for a precious exit permit for themselves or a member of their family. This book traces the dispersal of these collections and follow the fate of the collectors. Inevitably, their collections were confiscated by German officials (Jacques Goudstikker), sold by Nazi party member art dealers (Cassirer) or seized for state collections (Bloch-Bauer). Following the war Allied officials made little effort to retrieve these paintings, concentrating their resources on art removed from museums, churches, and palaces. But the collectior s heirs continued to pursue the return of their patrimony, and over the past twenty years have won a number of key court decisions in Europe and the US leading to the restitution of some of the lost art. For every victory, such as the return to the Bloch-Bauer heirs of their family s confiscated Klimts, are defeats and obstinate stonewalling by museums and collectors, who insist that the art was legally acquired in good faith.
