Book excerpt: He was supposed to be a myth. But from the moment I crossed the River Styx and fell under his dark spell...he was, quite simply, mine. *A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Hades and Persephone that's as sinful as it is sweet.* Society darling Persephone Dimitriou plans to flee the ultra-modern city of Olympus and start over far from the backstabbing politics of the Thirteen Houses. But all that's ripped away when her mother ambushes her with an engagement to Zeus, the dangerous power behind their glittering city's dark facade. With no options left, Persephone flees to the forbidden undercity and makes a devil's bargain with a man she once believed a myth...a man who awakens her to a world she never knew existed. Hades has spent his life in the shadows, and he has no intention of stepping into the light. But when he finds that Persephone can offer a little slice of the revenge he's spent years craving, it's all the excuse he needs to help her—for a price. Yet every breathless night spent tangled together has given Hades a taste for Persephone, and he'll go to war with Olympus itself to keep her close... "Deliciously inventive...Red-hot."—Publishers Weekly STARRED "I get shivers just thinking of their interactions. SHIVERS."—Mimi Koehler for The Nerd Daily The World of Dark Olympus: Neon Gods (Hades & Persephone) Electric Idol (Eros & Psyche) Wicked Beauty (Achilles & Patroclus & Helen) Radiant Sin (Apollo & Cassandra)

Book Oedipal God

  • Author : Meir Shahar
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2015-08-31
  • ISBN : 0824856961

Download or read book Oedipal God written by Meir Shahar and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oedipal God offers the most comprehensive account in any language of the prodigal deity Nezha. Celebrated for over a millennium, Nezha is among the most formidable and enigmatic of all Chinese gods. In this theoretically informed study Meir Shahar recounts Nezha’s riveting tale—which culminates in suicide and attempted patricide—and uncovers hidden tensions in the Chinese family system. In deploying the Freudian hypothesis, Shahar does not imply the Chinese legend’s identity with the Greek story of Oedipus. For one, in Nezha’s story the erotic attraction to the mother is not explicitly acknowledged. More generally, Chinese oedipal tales differ from Freud’s Greek prototype by the high degree of repression that is applied to them. Shahar argues that, despite a disastrous father-son relationship, Confucian ethics require that the oedipal drive masquerade as filial piety in Nezha’s story, dictating that the child-god kill himself before trying to avenge himself upon his father. Combining impeccable scholarship with an eminently readable style, the book covers a vast terrain: It surveys the image of the endearing child-god across varied genres from oral and written fiction, through theater, cinema, and television serials, to Japanese manga cartoons. It combines literary analysis with Shahar’s own anthropological field work, providing a thorough ethnography of Nezha’s flourishing cult. Crossing the boundaries between China’s diverse religious traditions, it tracks the rebellious infant in the many ways he has been venerated by Buddhist monks, Daoist priests, and possessed spirit mediums, whose dramatic performances have served to negotiate individual, familial, and collective tensions. Finally, the book offers a detailed history of the legend and the cult reaching back over two thousand years to its origins in India, where Nezha began as a mythological being named Nalakūbara, whose sexual misadventures were celebrated in the Sanskrit epics as early as the first centuries BCE. Here Shahar reveals the long-term impact that Indian mythology has exerted—through the medium of esoteric Buddhism—upon the Chinese imagination of divinity. A tour de force of literary analysis, ethnographic research, psychological insight, and cross-cultural investigation, Oedipal God is a must read for anyone interested in Chinese studies and the historical connection between India and China. Shahar’s broad reach and engaging approach will appeal to specialists and students in a variety of disciplines including Chinese religion, Chinese literature, anthropology, Buddhist studies, psychology, Indian studies, and cross-cultural history.

Book Can We Zoom into God

Download or read book Can We Zoom into God written by Andrew Hemingway and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Zoom worship emerged in Britain during the COVID lockdown of 2020, Christians quickly turned to an art form, a form of theater, to deliver their worship. It was a quest for immanence, the very thing the Reformation dealt with by the elevation of transcendence. What an intriguing thought: Could John Calvin with his dictum regarding piety have practiced Zoom worship? Served as he was with the principle that the finite cannot contain the infinite, we must admit it looks very unlikely! At least in this Calvin saw eye-to-eye with Erasmus, but what of Luther? He may have been a comfortable Zoom worshiper, with his views that "Religious artworks are neither here nor there" and "We may have them or not as we please." Little did the church realize that it would be a step back into the past, because "what you permit you promote." The desire to use images was much more sinister than in Medieval times, as these were now images of ourselves! Regardless of the age, the image reigns supreme. What had caused the demise? Was it bereavement? It could not be bereavement of God; rather, it was the loss of the social, the bereavement of "one another." The need for "one-anothering" had forced the hand of Christians to turn to a practice completely untested. Zoom worship was born--the genie is out, and will never go back in. But in the face of the now-acceptable force of contemporary narcissism, who cares?

Book excerpt: Classic graphic accounts of more than 4,000 Christians who endured suffering, torture, and a martyr’s death because of their simple faith in the gospel of Christ. Includes more than 50 finely detailed etchings by noted Dutch artist Jan Luyken. Songs, letters, prayers, and confessions appear with the stories of many “defenseless Christians” who were able to love their enemies and return good for evil. This gigantic book calls believers to follow Jesus in all areas of life, even unto death. Come what may, true Christian commitment demands supreme discipleship and steadfast adherence to the teachings modeled by Jesus and his apostles. Written and published in 1659 by a Dutch Mennonite, Thieleman J. van Braght, to strengthen the faith of his fellow believers, and translated into German in 1748 at the time of the French and Indian War for the same reason. In 1886 Martyrs Mirror was translated into English to challenge generations of Christians in North America. Free downloadable study guide available here.

Book The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture written by Anna McFarlane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this companion, an international range of contributors examine the cultural formation of cyberpunk from micro-level analyses of example texts to macro-level debates of movements, providing readers with snapshots of cyberpunk culture and also cyberpunk as culture. With technology seamlessly integrated into our lives and our selves, and social systems veering towards globalization and corporatization, cyberpunk has become a ubiquitous cultural formation that dominates our twenty-first century techno-digital landscapes. The Routledge Companion to Cyberpunk Culture traces cyberpunk through its historical developments as a literary science fiction form to its spread into other media such as comics, film, television, and video games. Moreover, seeing cyberpunk as a general cultural practice, the Companion provides insights into photography, music, fashion, and activism. Cyberpunk, as the chapters presented here argue, is integrated with other critical theoretical tenets of our times, such as posthumanism, the Anthropocene, animality, and empire. And lastly, cyberpunk is a vehicle that lends itself to the rise of new futurisms, occupying a variety of positions in our regionally diverse reality and thus linking, as much as differentiating, our perspectives on a globalized technoscientific world. With original entries that engage cyberpunk’s diverse ‘angles’ and its proliferation in our life worlds, this critical reference will be of significant interest to humanities students and scholars of media, cultural studies, literature, and beyond.

Book Do You Hear What I Hear

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Monzo
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2023-03-07
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Do You Hear What I Hear written by Anthony Monzo and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God speaks to us in many different ways. The Bible, of course, is His primary source; but if you focus on what you are seeing and hearing in the world around you, you can find spiritual messages in so many different sources, as God uses us as vessels to convey His message of salvation to the world. This includes through the visions of creation, the fragrances of nature, the sounds of the singing birds, the thunder of the clouds, the roars of the oceans, the amazing sunsets, the glorious sunrises, and even in the quiet and dark star-filled nights. As Paul wrote in Romans 1:20 (NIV), "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." He also speaks to us through music and film, in ways that we don't realize unless we are really paying attention. This book presents a taste of how popular music and movies, and even art as displayed on the cover, can convey a message of hope and love to all those who have ears to hear and eyes to see what God is trying to tell them. Some of the interpretations are based on what I perceive these songs or movies to be about, which may not necessarily be what the writer intended. Yet if you open up your heart, you can find a message of love and hope in so many songs and movies, and this message is what the gospel is all about. Jesus gave a new commandment when he said in John 13:34 (NLT), "Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other." And the hope that we have is the confident anticipation of spending eternity with the Lord in His eternal kingdom, and not just wishful thinking which is nothing but a worldly hope.
