Among the longest ongoing projects in rain forest ecology anywhere, Struhsaker's differs from the great majority of logging studies by emphasizing the fauna rather than looking only at the commercially valuable timber species. By providing long-term data on a variety of plants and animals, it offers the first truly in-depth synthesis of the consequences of selective logging in the tropics. The main body of the book demonstrates the adverse effects of logging--as many as 25 years after the event--on community structure and numerous other aspects of forest ecology. Although much has been claimed for the possibilities of sustainable logging in tropical rain forests, few data support these claims. Struhsaker demonstrates that future logging must be done at far lower intensities than is currently practiced if intact ecosystems are to be maintained. He also offers detailed recommendations for harvest plans compatible with the conservation of biodiversity and ecological integrity. The long-term data summarized here on the population dynamics of rain forest trees, primates, rodents, duikers, and elephants are unrivaled and will be widely cited, as will the data on seasonality, tree phrenology, gap dynamics, rainfall, and temperature. Struhsaker addresses the underlying causes of tropical deforestation and concludes that although there are numerous proximate factors, the ultimate causes are rapidly increasing human populations and rates of consumption per capita. He draws comparisons with relevant studies elsewhere in the tropics and offers specific recommendations to address the problems. Thomas T. Struhsaker has conducted field research in Africa over a period of 34 years. From 1970 through 1987 he established, developed, and directed the field research station in Kibale, Uganda. He maintains an active role in Kibale today and is a research scientist in the Department of Biological Anthropology and Anatomy at Duke University. His publications include The Red Colobus Monkey (1975) and more than 80 scientific and popular articles and technical reports on ecology, conservation, and animal behavior.

Book excerpt: To facilitate sustainable management of logged forests in the Caribbean, forest authorities of Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, jointly with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the University of Hamburg as a scientific partner, implemented the regional project “Ensuring Long-Term Productivity of Lowland Tropical Forests in the Caribbean” financed by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The main objective of the project was to support the sustainable management of logged forests to maintain productivity and prevent further degradation. For this purpose, extensive field studies were conducted in the project countries, which resulted in silvicultural recommendations presented in this publication. The project findings revealed that the application of general sustainable forest management protocols for tropical production forests that set limits on harvesting does not necessarily ensure sustained productivity if the composition and management of the residual stand are not considered. The ratio of the number of harvested trees to the remaining future crop trees can provide a simple indicator of the sustainability of harvest. If the current harvest exceeds the number of future crop trees, the harvest is not sustainable. As a rule of thumb, at least one, preferably two future crop trees per harvested tree should be retained for future use. Protection of future crop trees can be a simple and practical approach to prevent high grading and degradation of the forest growing stock. The importance of reduced impact logging to reduce unnecessary damage to the future crop trees and for sustainable forest management, in general, is stressed.

Book excerpt: Tropical forests store [approximately] 40% of terrestrial carbon, process six times as much carbon as is released through fossil fuel use, and are epicenters of biodiversity. Despite all that we know about tropical forests, there remains much to discover about variation in ecological strategies, differences in the way species acquire limited resources through dissimilarities in construction and allocation patterns. We also know little as to how this variation shapes the resilience of tropical tree communities to disturbance. These forests are increasingly threatened by global change stressors, such as anthropogenic land-use and climate change. Recent advances in ecological literature show that more insight into differences in ecological strategies among tropical forest species can be gained by going beyond species distributions to also examine functional trait variation. Functional traits are morphological and physiological traits that reflect allocation strategies thought to be important determinants of fitness. In the first two chapters of my dissertation, I quantified wood density and anatomical variation at multiple scales, and related this variation to ecological strategies of tropical forest tree species. The last two chapters examined effects of historical disturbance on the composition and temporal dynamics of tropical forest communities. In addition to wood density, other traits studied in these later chapters were maximum height and diameter. Across my dissertation, the scales spanned ranged from intra-individual, intra-specific, interspecific, community and temporal levels, across two tropical forests, the 50 ha CTFS plot in BCI, Panama, and the 5.2 ha long-term forest plots in Kibale National Park, Uganda. With the functional trait approach, my dissertation demonstrated several novel patterns, including 1) linear radial increases in wood density are typical of fast-growth high mortality tropical tree species, while slow-growth low mortality species show a range of radial changes in wood density including non-linear trends 2) greater variation in ecological strategies when wood density is decomposed into anatomical components, with functional consequences for species growth and mortality of saplings but not adult trees, 3) persistence of the effects of selective logging on the taxonomic and structural composition but not functional composition of a tropical forest 45 years after, and 4) inadequacy of classical successional models that assume recovery to pre-disturbance conditions for predicting the effects of selective logging on tropical forest dynamics.
