The first involved the excavation of a Bronze Age barrow and the second, environmental augur core sampling in Marazion Marsh. Both sites lie within an area of coastal hinterland, which has been subject to incursions by rising sea levels. Since the Mesolithic, an area of approximately 1 kilometer in extent between the current shoreline and St Michael’s Mount has been lost to gradually rising sea levels. With current climate change, this process is likely to occur at an increasing rate. Given their proximity, the opportunity was taken to draw the results from the two projects together along with all available existing environmental data from the area. For the first time, the results from all previous palaeoenvironmental projects in the Mount’s Bay area have been brought together. Evidence for coastal change and sea level rise is discussed and a model for the drowning landscape presented. In addition to modeling the loss of land and describing the environment over time, social responses including the wider context of the Bronze Age barrow and later Bronze Age metalwork deposition in the Mount’s Bay environs are considered. The effects of the gradual loss of land are discussed in terms of how change is perceived, its effects on community resilience, and the construction of social memory and narratives of place. The volume presents the potential for nationally significant environmental data to survive, which demonstrates the long-term effects of climate change and rising sea levels, and peoples’ responses to these over time.

Book excerpt: Present models of Holocene estuary evolution are driven largely by changes in relative sea-level (RSL) with little reference to long-term changes in fluvial regime and regional climate. Recent US studies of estuarine sequences have shown that decadal-centennial scale fluctuations in river discharge and freshwater inflow can be inferred by changes in estuarine palaeosalinity and that the timing of these events reflect changes in regional precipitation. It is therefore becoming apparent that estuarine sequences may hold an archive of mid-late Holocene climate change information, as well as being recorders of RSL change. The principal aim of this study is to produce a palaeosalinity-based climate record for southern England during the late Holocene, based on changes in climate-driven freshwater influx into the estuarine environment. The late Holocene palaeosalinity record of the inner Taw Estuary will be reconstructed using diatom salinity index as a proxy for salinity. Nine periods of below-average or above-average palaeosalinity have been recognised in the Taw Estuary since 300 cal.yr. BC. Four intervals of high river discharge are identified at 520-780, 850-1030, 1215-1315, and 1420-1900 cal.yr. AD. Five intervals of low river discharge are identified at 300-520, 780-850, 1030-1215, 1315-1420, and 1900-2000 cal.yr. AD. This shows that there has been significant climatic variation in southern Britain since c.300 cal.yr. AD, with climatic shifts evident in the estuarine record. In order to validate this record, the fluvial geomorphic history of the lower Taw valley was also investigated. There is a strong correspondence between the dry and wet climatic periods identified in the estuary and the geomorphic fluvial history and flood record of the lower Taw valley. Comparisons with other proxy climate records in the UK and Europe show a high degree of correspondence with the Taw Estuary palaeosalinity-based climate record. As the inner estuary environment will also be influenced by RSL change during the late Holocene, RSL change since c.6600 cal.yr. BP was successfully reconstructed in the Taw Estuary, with eleven new validated SLIPs providing evidence of former MSL. The magnitude and rates of RSL rise in north Devon are compared with other RSL records in southern Britain, suggesting that the isostatic history is similar to other areas bordering the Bristol Channel and with the central south coast of England. Fluctuations in palaeosalinity in the late Holocene are seen to be mainly controlled by centennial-scale changes in climate-driven river discharge, rather than RSL change.

Book excerpt: This Brief deals with the reconstruction of Holocene paleoenvironment in the central part of Bangladesh in relation to relative sea-level (RSL) changes which is 200 km north from the present coastline. Lithofacies characteristics, mangal peat, diatom and paleophysiographical evidences were considered to reconstruct the past position and C-14 ages were used to determine the time of formation of the relative sea-level during the Holocene. With standard reference datum the required m.s.l. at the surface of five sections are calculate and the RSL curve suggests that Bangladesh has experienced two mid Holocene RSL transgressions punctuated by regressions. The abundant marine diatom and mangrove pollens indicates that the highest RSL transgression in Bangladesh is around 6000 cal BP which is attained at least 4.5 to 5m higher than the modern m.s.l. After this phase, the relative sea-level started to fall and consequently a freshwater peat developed around 5980―5700 cal BP. The abundant mangrove pollens in salt-marsh succession shows the regression around 5500 cal BP and, the height was 1―2 m higher than the modern sea level. These and more interesting findings are discussed in this Brief.

Abstract: The relative sea level (RSL) history of Terengganu, east coast of the tectonically stable Malay-Peninsula, of the last 2500 years was reconstructed from dated mangrove sediments. Microfossils, particularly pollens, were used for estimating the indicative meaning of each sea-level index point. Pollen assemblages representing the top end of mangrove zone and the low end of swamp zone have an indicative meaning of 0.260.23 m and 0.330.26 m above local mean sea level respectively. The sea-level index points produced have all shown negative tendency of change, as the pollen assemblages have revealed a general environmental change towards a more freshwater condition. The more saline mangrove vegetation was graded into lagoon/riverine Nypa frusticans, or freshwater swamp Myrtaceae or Cyperaceae, depending on the distance of sampling sites from the palaeo-beach ridges. The reconstructed RSL has indicated a RSL fall to below the present mean sea level roughly since the last 1500 years, reaching a lowstand with a minimal value of -1.280.26 m at 920-750 cal. year BP, before a transgression took place between 920-280 cal. year BP, for RSL to return back to the present level. This observation departs from the steady RSL decline to present as predicted by geophysical model. This RSL fall suggests that, in addition to ocean siphoning and continental levering, the late Holocene RSL change in the far-field regions is also influenced by climatic driving forces such as Neo-glacial ice sheet expansion. The effects of these climatic factors have been recorded in some near- and intermediate- field regions. Book excerpt: This study investigates the isolation sequence of several coastal lakes in the Lofoten Islands, northern Norway to understand how relative sea level has changed during the Late Holocene. I use established methods to assess changes in marine influence over the course of the lake records. Three cores ranging from 47 to 174 cm and spanning portions of the last 8000 cal yr BP were analyzed. I measured bulk density, bulk organic matter properties, and elemental profiles from scanning X-ray fluorescence. These characteristics of the sediment reflect detailed changes in salinity and water column conditions as the lakes became isolated. Three distinct lithostratgiraphic units were identified in Inner Borgpollen and represent an open marine phase where the basins were continually inundated marine water (3500 – 1600 cal yr BP), a brackish phase characterized by intermittent marine influence (1600 – 600 cal yr BP), and a tidal phase characterized by restricted marine influence (600 cal yr BP to present). The timing of these phases generally corresponds with previous interpretations of the local relative sea-level history and these records capture sea-level regression during the late Holocene which coincided with human settlements. As a result, changing salinity conditions due to the isolation process may explain the settlement patterns of early human populations between 1600 and 600 cal yr BP.
