Book excerpt: All That Swagger has been acclaimed by pundits as one of the best Australian books yet composed. The story develops from the center outwards from one who feels the enchantment of Australia. The characters are established in the dirt, the woodland, as the early pioneers were. One subject anxieties character - that backbone of direction, hardihood boldness, honesty, which should perpetually be the establishment of any stable and moral State or condition of society. It introduces the courageous independence with which the extraordinary Australian landmass has been investigated, studied, fenced, cleared, furrowed, and is presently monitored by a virile people. Here is an immense canvas, State-wide, and as long as history itself - to the extent that it contains the depiction of life and improvement in this station of the British Empire. Aptitude and condition have productively consolidated in the generation. The author moves living pieces on the squares of a mammoth chessboard, and she plays the game such that shows obviously that she comprehends the gambit of life and every one of its varieties. All That Swagger is all Australian in each word. Just an Australian could have composed it.

Book Pioneers of Old Monocacy

Download or read book Pioneers of Old Monocacy written by Grace L. Tracey and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1987 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a definitive account of the land and the people of Old Monocacy in early Frederick County, Maryland. The outgrowth of a project begun by Grace L. Tracey and completed by John P. Dern, it presents a detailed account of landholdings in that part of western Maryland that eventually became Frederick County. At the same time it provides a history of the inhabitants of the area, from the early traders and explorers to the farsighted investors and speculators, from the original Quaker settlers to the Germans of central Frederick County. In essence, the book has a dual focus. First it attempts to locate and describe the land of the early settlers. This is done by means of a superb series of plat maps, drawn to scale from original surveys and based both on certificates of survey and patents. These show, in precise configurations, the exact locations of the various grants and lots, the names of owners and occupiers, the dates of surveys and patents, and the names of contiguous land owners. Second, it identifies the early settlers and inhabitants of the area, carefully following them through deeds, wills, and inventories, judgment records, and rent rolls. Finally, in meticulously compiled appendices it provides a chronological list of surveys between 1721 and 1743; an alphabetical list of surveys, giving dates, page reference--text and maps--and patent references; a list of taxables for 1733-34; and a list of the early German settlers of Frederick County, showing their religion, their location, dates of arrival, and their earliest records in the county. Winner of the 1988 Donald Lines Jacobus Award

Book The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers

Download or read book The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers written by Kerri Turner and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrograd, 1914. A country on a knife edge. The story of two people caught in the middle – with everything to lose... A stunning debut from a talented new Australian voice in historical fiction. Valentina Yershova's position in the Romanovs' Imperial Russian Ballet is the only thing that keeps her from the clutches of poverty. With implacable determination, she has clawed her way through the ranks, relying not only on her talent but her alliances with influential men that grant them her body, but never her heart. Then Luka Zhirkov - the gifted son of a factory worker - joins the company, and suddenly everything she has built is put at risk. For Luka, being accepted into the company fulfils a lifelong dream. But in the eyes of his proletariat father, it makes him a traitor. As civil war tightens its grip and the country starves, Luka is torn between his growing connection to Valentina and his guilt for their lavish way of life. For the Imperial Russian Ballet has become the ultimate symbol of Romanov indulgence, and soon the lovers are forced to choose: their country, their art or each other... A powerful novel of revolution, passion and just how much two people will sacrifice… 'A wonderful debut from author, Kerri Turner ... Through her own work as a dancer, and thorough historical research, Turner has created figures that literally dance off the page. Like the influence of the ballet company itself, the characters will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.' -- Caroline Beecham, author of Eleanor's Secret and Maggie's Kitchen '...beautiful, daring, deceptive and surprising.' The Australian Women's Weekly 'an accomplished debut' Sunday Mail Adelaide
