Book Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra

Download or read book Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra written by W.H. King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic and nuclear physics are two flourishing but distinct branches of physics; the subject of isotope shifts in atomic spectra is one of the few that links these two branches. It is a subject that has been studied for well over fifty years, but interest in the subject, far from flagging, has been stimulated in recent years. Fast computers have enabled theoreticians to evaluate the properties of many-electron atoms, and laser spectroscopy has made it possible to measure isotope shifts in the previously unmeasurable areas of very rare isotopes, short-lived radioactive isotopes, weak transitions, and transitions involving high-lying atomic levels. Isotope shifts can now be measured with greater accuracy than before in both optical transitions and x-ray transitions of muonic atoms; this improved accuracy is revealing new facets of the subject. I am very grateful to Dr. H. G. Kuhn, F. R. S. , for having introduced me to the subject in the 1950s, and for supervising my efforts to measure isotope shifts in the spectrum of ruthenium. I thus approach the subject as an experimental atomic spectroscopist. This bias is obviously apparent in my use of the spectroscopist's notation of lower-upper for a transition, rather than the nuclear physicist's upper-lower. My reasons are given in Section 1. 3 and I hope that nuclear physicists will forgive me for using this notation even for muonic x-ray transitions.

Book Investigation of Short Lived Isotopes by Laser Spectroscopy

Download or read book Investigation of Short Lived Isotopes by Laser Spectroscopy written by Ernest W. Otten and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-01-31 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-spectroscopic methods can be applied to the systematic investigation of radioactive isotopes, covering up to 30 isotopes per element (500 nuclides in total). This book shows how the high resolution and sensitivity of laser spectroscopic methods can be used in experiments on the hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the atomic spectrum or applied to the more general problem of trace analysis. It examines the most popular methods in the field including laser spectroscopy on fast beams and resonance ionization spectroscopy, all of which have a number of variants. Techniques of production and the separation of unstable isotopes are described, along with the physics and processes of numerous laser spectroscopic methods. Also included is a summary of the results of experiments carried out on the systematics of nuclear structure in exotic regions of the nuclear chart.

Book Applied Laser Spectroscopy for Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Applied Laser Spectroscopy for Nuclear Physics written by Thomas Day Goodacre and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores two distinct applications of laser spectroscopy: the study of nuclear ground state properties, and element selective radioactive ion beam production. It also presents the methods and results of an investigation into isotope shifts in the mercury isotopic chain. These Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) developments are detailed, together with an RILIS ionization scheme that allowed laser ionized ion beams of chromium, germanium, radium and tellurium to be generated at the Isotope Mass Separator On-Line (ISOLDE) facility. A combination of laser spectroscopy with decay spectroscopy and mass spectrometry unambiguously demonstrated a cessation of the extreme shape staggering first observed in the 1970s and revealed the characteristic kink at the crossing of the N=126 shell closure. A series of RILIS developments were required to facilitate this experiment, including mercury “ionization scheme” development and the coupling of the RILIS with an arc discharge ion source. Laser spectroscopy has since become a powerful tool for nuclear physics and the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS), of the ISOLDE facility at CERN, is a prime example. Highlighting important advances in this field, the thesis offers a unique and revealing resource.

Book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy

Download or read book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy written by Wilhelm Hanle and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. J. BEYER AND H. KLEINPOPPEN We are pleased to present Part D of Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy to the scientific community active in this field of research. When we invited authors to contribute articles to Part C to be dedicated to Wilhelm Hanle, we received a sufficiently enthusiastic response that we could embark on two further volumes and thus approach the initial goal (set when Parts A and B were in the planning stage) of an almost comprehensive survey of the current state of atomic spectroscopy. As mentioned in the introduction to Parts A and B, new experimental methods have enriched and advanced the field of atomic spectroscopy to such a degree that it serves not only as a source of atomic structure data but also as a test ground for fundamental atomic theories based upon the framework of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. However, modern laser and photon correlation techniques have also been applied successfully to probe beyond the "traditional" quantum mechanical and quantum electrodynamical theories into nuclear structure theories, electro weak theories, and the growing field of local realistic theories versus quan tum theories. It is obvious from the contents of this volume and by no means surprising that applications of laser radiation again played a decisive role in the development of new and high-precision spectroscopic techniques.

Book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy

Download or read book Progress in Atomic Spectroscopy written by W. Hanle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. J. BEYER AND H. KLEINPOPPEN During the preparation of Parts A and B of Progress in Atomic Spectros copy a few years ago, it soon became obvious that a comprehensive review and description of this field of modern atomic physics could not be achieved within the limitations of a two-volume book. While it was possible to include a large variety of spectroscopic methods, inevitably some fields had to be cut short or left out altogether. Other fields have developed so rapidly that they demand full cover in an additional volume. One of the major problems, already encountered during the prepar ation of the first volumes, was to keep track of new developments and approaches which result in spectroscopic data. We have to look far beyond the area of traditional atomic spectroscopy since methods of atomic and ion collision physics, nuclear physics, and even particle physics all make important contributions to our knowledge of the static and dynamical state of atoms and ions, and thereby greatly add to the continuing fascination of a field of research which has given us so much fundamental knowledge since the middle of the last century. In this volume, we have tried to strike a balance between contribu tions belonging to the more established fields of atomic structure and spectroscopy and those fields where atomic spectroscopy overlaps with other areas.
