Book Report on the Progress of Recovery Strategy Implementation for the Cowichan Lake Lamprey Entosphenus Macrostomus in Canada for the Period 2007 2015

Download or read book Report on the Progress of Recovery Strategy Implementation for the Cowichan Lake Lamprey Entosphenus Macrostomus in Canada for the Period 2007 2015 written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Vancouver Lamprey (Lampetra macrostoma), now known as the Cowichan Lake Lamprey, was assessed as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) in 2000, and subsequently listed under the Species at Risk Act as Threatened in June of 2003. In September of 2007 the final Recovery Strategy for Vancouver Lamprey (Lampetra macrostoma) in Canada was posted to the Species at Risk Public Registry. An updated COSEWIC assessment in 2008 reconfirmed the species' status as Threatened (COSEWIC 2008). The recovery goal for Vancouver lamprey is to ensure its long-term viability within its natural range. It is likely that this species will always remain at some risk due to its extremely limited distribution. This report documents the progress of Recovery Strategy implementation for Cowichan Lake Lamprey. It summarizes progress that Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Province of British Columbia's Ministry of Environment, and other interested parties have made towards achieving the goal and objectives set out in the Recovery Strategy, including: conducting new research and monitoring activities (including advancing studies to support the identification of critical habitat); and completing management activities that help Canadians reduce impacts on, and better understand the threats to, Cowichan Lake Lamprey"--Executive summary.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cowichan (Vancouver) Lamprey (Entosphenus macrostomus) is listed as Threatened on Schedule 1 of the Canadian Species at Risk Act (SARA). It is a freshwater parasitic fish endemic only to the Cowichan watershed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The species has been found in Cowichan, Bear and Mesachie lakes and the lower parts of some tributaries to these lakes. The purpose of this study was to document the habitat availability in the nearshore area of three locations previously identified as either likely spawning habitat or ammocoete rearing habitat for Cowichan Lamprey in the summer drought conditions"--Introd., p. Book Information to Support the Identification of Critical Habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Var Marifuga

Download or read book Information to Support the Identification of Critical Habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Var Marifuga written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical habitat is proposed for the Morrison Creek Lamprey in Morrison Creek, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The Morrison Creek Lamprey is currently listed as Endangered in Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. The Morrison Creek Lamprey is endemic to Morrison Creek and any habitat that is critical for the survival and recovery for this species, must be afforded protection. Given the small size of the Morrison Creek drainage, the distribution of habitats for various life stages of the Morrison Creek Lamprey, the importance of consistent cold water to the continued survival of the species within the creek, and the extreme endemism of this species the critical habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey is recommended as the headwaters for the Morrison Creek watershed, Morrison Creek and Arden Creek in its entirety, and a riparian area of between 10 and 30 metres.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This endemic parasitic fish is known from only three connected lakes and the lower reaches of larger tributaries within a single watershed on Vancouver Island. The species' spawning areas and juvenile rearing habitats have a restricted distribution in tributary deltas and lakeshore littoral habitat. Slow but ongoing declines in habitat quality and quantity due to threats from droughts and water management, sediment mobilized following upslope logging, and shoreline development threaten the species' long-term persistence"--Assessment Summary - November 2017, p. iii.

Book Can We Learn from Other Freshwater Parasitic Lampreys to Help Manage Cowichan Lake Lamprey Entosphenus Macrostomus

Download or read book Can We Learn from Other Freshwater Parasitic Lampreys to Help Manage Cowichan Lake Lamprey Entosphenus Macrostomus written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cowichan Lake Lamprey (Entosphenus macrostomus) is a freshwater parasitic lamprey species found in Cowichan and Mesachie lakes on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It was first described in Beamish (1982) and has been studied intermittently since. In 2003, it was listed as Threatened on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. In the absence of scientific certainty, decisions regarding the management of the species and its habitat must be made. This is becoming increasingly important in recent years as climate change is increasing the stress on water supply in the watershed. This review was undertaken to determine if what we can learn from similar parasitic freshwater lamprey species which may be better studied. Research on the Chestnut, Silver, and Ohio lampreys in particular, each studied more extensively than Cowichan Lake Lamprey, can provide guidance to inform the management and science of this threatened species. It is argued that due to similarities in biology and life history between these species, they are more biologically relevant to use as proxy species than other lamprey, for example parasitic anadromous species"--Abstract, page v.

Book Global Variation in the Thermal Tolerances of Lamprey

Download or read book Global Variation in the Thermal Tolerances of Lamprey written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The degree to which freshwater fishes are vulnerable to climate change is dependant on a species' tolerance to change, and the magnitude of the change. Freshwater fishes are often highly sensitive to their thermal environments, especially those that are range restricted, which limits dispersal ability to thermal refugia. Understanding the thermal tolerances for species is therefore necessary to determine their potential vulnerability to climate change, and inform potential conservation management decisions for species. Lamprey, which evolved hundreds of millions of years ago have a global distribution in both freshwater and marine habitats. Despite variation in distribution, climate change has been identified as potential threat across all species, yet the degree of that impact is not fully understood. This is particularly concerning for lamprey species already considered at risk of extinction, such as the Western Brook Lamprey, Morrison Creek population (Lampetra richardsoni) and the Vancouver Lamprey (Entosphenus macrostomus) in British Columbia, where nothing is known about the thermal tolerances of these species. A literature review was therefore conducted to understand thermal tolerances for lamprey globally. Despite their global distribution and evolutionary history the range of variation between species is fairly narrow and can be used to infer likely thermal tolerances for at risk lamprey in British Columbia"--Abstract, page iv.
