Book Estimating Snow Water Equivalent from Shallow Snowpack Depth Measurements in the Great Salt Lake Desert Basin

Download or read book Estimating Snow Water Equivalent from Shallow Snowpack Depth Measurements in the Great Salt Lake Desert Basin written by Lance C. Kovel, P.E. and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-23 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An independent technical study evaluating the use of snowpack depth measurements to estimate snow water equivalent (SWE) of shallow and ephemeral snowpacks in the Great Salt Lake Desert Basin, located in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. A parameterized bulk snow density model was combined with mean air temperature measurements to predict snow water equivalent in the Great Salt Lake Desert Basin using only snowpack depth measurements and prior 10-day average daily mean air temperatures. The model was developed using historic snowpack data obtained from a limited number of automated snowpack telemetry (SNOTEL) and weather stations within and near the Basin. Model results from lower-elevation, shallow and ephemeral snowpacks may be used to supplement data obtained from existing SNOTEL stations, sparsely located in the higher elevations of the Basin, to create a more-complete and accurate prediction of the Basin’s snow water equivalent, which may be used to better-manage the water demands of the Basin’s surrounding populations.

Book Snow Engineering Recent Advances

Download or read book Snow Engineering Recent Advances written by I. Izumi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the conference was to provide a forum for engineers, architects and scientists to discuss a broad range of research and design methods for various problems related to snow engineering. Specialists in building and civil engineering, environmental engineering, energy engineering, urban planning, and regional development as well as snow scientists were brought together for the conference. The technical sessions were in five thematic areas as follows: Snow technology and science; Building and construction engineering; Infrastructure and transportation; Housing and residential planning; Development strategy in snow countries. The 115 papers provide keys to realize more comfortable living conditions in snow countries and to overcome many problems in heavy snow regions.

Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-20 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet presents prioritized science, applications, and observations, along with related strategic and programmatic guidance, to support the U.S. civil space Earth observation program over the coming decade.

Book Spatial Modelling of the Terrestrial Environment

Download or read book Spatial Modelling of the Terrestrial Environment written by Richard E.J. Kelly and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-10-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and predicting the behaviour of natural and human environmental systems is crucial for the effective management of the Earth’s limited resources. Recently, great advances have been made through spatial modelling. This book provides a snapshot of the latest research in modelling technologies and methodologies within five environmental fields; the cryosphere, hydrology, geomorphology, vegetation interfaces and urban environments. Spatial Modelling of the Terrestrial Environment deals with the use of remote sensing, numerical models and GIS in addressing important natural and human environmental sciences issues, focusing on the theory and application of modelling remotely sensed data within the context of environmental processes. Extensive case material exemplifies the latest research and modelling paradigms presented in the book.

Book Uses of Risk Analysis to Achieve Balanced Safety in Building Design and Operations

Download or read book Uses of Risk Analysis to Achieve Balanced Safety in Building Design and Operations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers engineering risk analysis applications to the field of building safety. Building codes and design criteria used by architects and engineersâ€"standards of good practice defined by industry consensusâ€"have made great strides in bringing the dangers of facilities under control, but the range of hazards (e.g., fire, indoor air pollutants, electrical malfunctions) is broad. Risk analysis offers improved overall safety of new and existing facilities without imposing unacceptable costs. Broad application of risk analysis will help facility professionals, policymakers, and facility users and owners to understand the risks, to determine what levels of risk are socially and economically tolerable, and to manage risk more effectively.
