Book Locality Province and Nation

Download or read book Locality Province and Nation written by John Gallagher and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1973-07-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the steady growth of interest in the history of India under the British, interpretations have emerged, and they may sharply alter much of our thinking about Indian nationalism and British Imperialism. Some of these historical revisions, and the conclusions which may flow from them, are illustrated by the essays in this book. All of them grapple with questions of Indian political organization in different parts of the British Raj. They enquire how these organizations worked at different level; in the towns and in the countryside, in the provinces and in the subcontinent itself. They examine how these kinds of politics came to be bonded together into what were called 'nationalist' movements. They suggest that the interplay between these movements and British Imperialism was very much more ambiguous than has been commonly supposed. All these essays are preliminary announcements of findings which will later appear in longer versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of writings by Ranabir Samaddar addresses two issues in view of the nation form—its relation with democracy and the problem of governing the nation. This book not only comprises essays that stand on their own merit, but in their totality, it presents a historical summary of the nation's experience through decades—before and after Independence. There is no transcendental ideal of the nation, and to the extent that such an ideal is present, it only serves to hide the reality of the nation form. This book, thus, is not about nationalism, but about the nation from a theoretical perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distillation of the historian’s finest writings on modern Indian historical themes. For the past forty years or more, the most influential, respected, and popular scholar of modern Indian history has been Sumit Sarkar. When his first monograph, The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal 1903–1908, appeared in 1973 it soon became obvious that the book represented a paradigm shift within its genre. As Dipesh Chakrabarty put it when the work was republished in 2010: “Very few monographs, if any, have ever rivalled the meticulous research and the thick description that characterized this book, or the lucidity of its exposition and the persuasive power of its overall argument.” Ten years later, Sarkar published Modern India 1885–1947, a textbook for advanced students and teachers. Its synthesis and critique of everything significant that had been written about the period was seen as monumental, lucid, and the fashioning of a new way of looking at colonialism and nationalism. Sarkar, however, changed the face not only of modern Indian history monographs and textbooks, he also radically altered the capacity of the historical essay. As Beethoven stretched the sonata form beyond earlier conceivable limits, Sarkar can be said to have expanded the academic essay. In his hands, the shorter form becomes in miniature both monograph and textbook. The present collection, which reproduces many of Sarkar’s finest writings, shows an intellectually scintillating, skeptical-Marxist mind at its sharpest. Sumit Sarkar is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Delhi in India.

Book The Emergence of Indian Nationalism

Download or read book The Emergence of Indian Nationalism written by Anil Seal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1968-03-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Dr Seal analyses the social roots of the rather confused stirrings towards political organisations of the 1870s and 1880s which brought about the foundation of the Indian National Congress. He is concerned not only with the politicians, viceroys and civil servants but with the social structure of those parts of India where political movements were most prominent at the time. The emphasis of this work is more upon Indian politics than upon British policy: the associations in Bengal and Bombay, the genesis of the Congress and the Muslim breakaway which accentuated the political divisions in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real India: Essays on Hinduism and Indian Nationalism by Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' Discover the profound insights of Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' in this compelling collection of two essays, "Hinduism and Worldliness" and "India is United." This book delves into the rich tapestry of Hinduism and the enduring unity of India, offering a nuanced perspective on both spirituality and nationalism. In "Hinduism and Worldliness, " Dinkar challenges the misconception that Hinduism is solely a religion of renunciation and detachment. He traces the evolution of Hindu thought from the valorous Vedic traditions to the influence of asceticism introduced by Mahavira and Buddha. Highlighting figures like Guru Gobind Singh, Swami Vivekananda, and Lokmanya Tilak, he illustrates how Hinduism has continually adapted, emphasising courage, struggle, and service to society. This essay is a powerful reminder that Hinduism, at its core, values both worldly achievements and spiritual growth. "India is United" explores the remarkable unity within India's vast diversity. Dinkar examines the geographical, cultural, and linguistic factors that have shaped India's identity. Despite regional differences, he argues that a shared cultural heritage and philosophical outlook bind the nation together. He reflects on India's historical struggles for unity, the role of strong leaders, and the intrinsic connection between India's natural boundaries and its sense of nationhood. This essay underscores the enduring strength of Indian unity amidst diversity. Through eloquent prose and deep historical analysis, Dinkar's essays inspire readers to appreciate the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity, spirituality and pragmatism. "The Real India" is a must-read for anyone interested in the philosophical foundations of Hinduism, the cultural fabric of India, and the timeless pursuit of national unity and strength. Key Themes. The evolution of Hinduism from Vedic valour to modern activism. The balance between spirituality and worldly duties in Hindu thought. The historical and cultural unity of India amidst its diversity. The role of geography in shaping national identity and unity. Inspiring figures who have redefined Hinduism and Indian nationalism. Engage with these thought-provoking essays to gain a deeper understanding of India's spiritual heritage and the enduring quest for unity and strength.

Download or read book The Indian Ideology written by Perry Anderson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historiography of modern India is largely a pageant of presumed virtues: harmonious territorial unity, religious impartiality, the miraculous survival of electoral norms in the world’s most populous democracy. Even critics of Indian society still underwrite such claims. But how well does the “Idea of India” correspond to the realities of the Union? In an iconoclastic intervention, Marxist historian Perry Anderson provides an unforgettable reading of the Subcontinent’s passage through Independence and the catastrophe of Partition, the idiosyncratic and corrosive vanities of Gandhi and Nehru, and the close interrelationship of Indian democracy and caste inequality. The Indian Ideology caused uproar on first publication in 2012, not least for breaking with euphemisms for Delhi’s occupation of Kashmir. This new, expanded edition includes the author’s reply to his critics, an interview with the Indian weekly Outlook, and a postscript on India under the rule of Narendra Modi.

Book Congress and Indian Nationalism

Download or read book Congress and Indian Nationalism written by Richard Sisson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen distinguished historians and political scientists discuss the phenomenon of Indian Nationalism, one hundred years after the founding of the Congress party. They offer important new interpretations of Nationalism's evolution during more than six decades of crucial change and rapid growth. As India's foremost political institution, the National Congress with its changing fortunes mirrored Indian aspirations, ideals, dreams, and failures during the country's struggle for nationhood. Many difficulties face by the pre-independence Indian National Congress are critically examined for the first time in this volume. Major times of crisis and transition are considered, as well as the tension between mass action and political control and the problem of creating and maintaining unity in the face of divisive social and economic interests and between deeply hostile religious communities. A composite portrait of the Congress Party emerges. We see a coalition of often conflicting communities and interests much like India itself, struggling to stay together, tenuously united by little more at times than a common "enemy," the imperial British Raj. But linked together in precarious, seemingly haphazard fashion, shifting networks of elite political entrepreneurs manage to keep India's National Congress alive long enough to convince the British that it would be easier to "Quit India" than to try to hang on to it by force. With the abrupt transfer of power form the British to the independent Dominions of India and Pakistan in 1947, Congress provided institutional sinews for the administration of what had been British India and over five hundred Princely States. By contributing to a deeper understanding of India's nationalist experience, this volume may illuminate the experience of other Third World states. Essays by:S. BhattacharyaJudith M.
