Studies by historians have usually concentrated on the political and military issues rather than the fortunes of ordinary people implicated in the conflict. Edgehill and Beyond adopts a different perspective. While not neglecting the major campaigns, it aims to discover the extent to which the local community was disrupted by almost continuous military occupation and violence between 1642 and 1645. Detailed examinations are included of south Warwickshire and north Oxfordshire, using the relatively little-known parish accounts among the Commonwealth Exchequer Papers and other contemporary sources, many never before published. New light is also thrown on the supposedly well-known campaigns of Edgehill, the relief of Gloucester, the siege of Banbury, and the battles of Cropredy and Naseby. Many other actions, nationally insignificant but traumatic for the district, are highlighted, including the plunder of Shakespeare's friends and relatives at Stratford and the destruction of some of England's finest houses. The experiences of hundreds of individuals are also recorded, often for the first time, testifying to the all-embracing nature of the conflict in which these ordinary people were unavoidably caught up.

But how did the lady get on her pedestal--and were the lives of white southern women always so different from those of their northern contemporaries? In her ambitious new book, Cynthia A. Kierner charts the evolution of the lives of white southern women through the colonial, revolutionary, and early republican eras. Using the lady on her pedestal as the end--rather than the beginning--of her story, she shows how gentility, republican political ideals, and evangelical religion successively altered southern gender ideals and thereby forced women to reshape their public roles. Kierner concludes that southern women continually renegotiated their access to the public sphere--and that even the emergence of the frail and submissive lady as icon did not obliterate women's public role.Kierner draws on a strong overall command of early American and women's history and adds to it research in letters, diaries, newspapers, secular and religious periodicals, travelers' accounts, etiquette manuals, and cookery books. The systemic view steers between extended functionalism and enactivism by stressing how living beings connect bodies, technologies, language and culture. Since human thinking depends on a cultural ecology, people connect biologically-based powers with extended systems and, by so doing, they constitute cognitive systems that reach across the skin. Biological interpretation exploits extended functional systems. Illustrating distributed cognition, one set of chapters focus on computer mediated trust, work at a construction site, judgement aggregation and crime scene investigation. Turning to how bodies manufacture skills, the remaining chapters focus on interactivity or sense-saturated coordination. The feeling of doing is crucial to solving maths problems, learning about X rays, finding an invoice number, or launching a warhead in a film. People both participate in extended systems and exert individual responsibility. Brains manufacture a now to which selves are anchored: people can act automatically or, at times, vary habits and choose to author actions. In ontogenesis, a systemic view permits rationality to be seen as gaining mastery over world-side resources. Much evidence and argument thus speaks for reconnecting the study of computation, interactivity and human artifice. Taken together, this can drive a networks revolution that gives due cognitive importance to the perceivable world that lies beyond the brain. Cognition Beyond the Brain is a valuable reference for researchers, practitioners and graduate students within the fields of Computer Science, Psychology, Linguistics and Cognitive Science.
