Book Economic Leverage on the Soviet Union in the 1980 s

Download or read book Economic Leverage on the Soviet Union in the 1980 s written by Abraham Samuel Becker and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a reevaluation of the use of leverage on Soviet behavior by means of the instruments of East-West economic relations. A conceptual framework is presented in Sections II and III, centering on the ideas of leverage and denial as policy tools and on the opportunities and constrains offered by Soviet economic dependence and vulnerabilities. Sections IV through VI analyze the actual use of the major export instruments--grain, credit, and gas pipeline technology--during the early 1980s. Section VII takes up the issue of consensus in the Western alliance as a condition of successful East-West trade policy. The author concludes that the only possibility for effective denial over the long term is to aim at selective impedance of the Soviet military effort.

Book excerpt: More than half a decade has passed since Gorbachev launched his "prerestroika" programme to reform the Soviet Union, but the struggle between reformers and conservatives continues to rage while the final outcome, and even the goals of the programme, remains a mystery. Whatever the outcome of this transformation, its impact will reverberate well beyond the borders of the USSR to shape US security and commercial policies into the next century. This edited volume brings together original essays by US-Soviet relations scholars and international business and security experts to explore the many complex and critical issues that the United States must confront in developing its commercial and security policies for the next decade.

Book The Polish Crisis and Relations with Eastern Europe 1979 1982

Download or read book The Polish Crisis and Relations with Eastern Europe 1979 1982 written by Isabelle Tombs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of diplomatic documents describing Britain’s relations with Eastern Europe from 1979 to 1982, with special focus on the crisis in Poland. After coming to power in 1979, the Conservative Government of Margaret Thatcher reaffirmed a policy of ‘differentiation’ between the Soviet Union and the rest of Eastern Europe, and between individual countries; concurrently it encouraged states to exercise a limited amount of independence. This policy was soon put to the test when in 1980 Solidarność, the Solidarity trade union led by Lech Wałęsa, challenged the power of the Party state in Poland. Political demands, social unrest and economic crisis culminated in the imposition of martial law in December 1981, finally suspended in December 1982. The volume maps the UK response, in consultation with Western partners, to the unfolding crisis in Poland, the threat of Soviet intervention and the impact on other Communist states in Europe. The volume also provides a flavour of bilateral UK relations with Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia; highlighting themes such as human rights and trade. This volume will be of great interest to students of British Politics, Eastern European Politics, Cold War History, Diplomacy Studies and International Relations in general.

Book Economic Vulnerability in International Relations

Download or read book Economic Vulnerability in International Relations written by Beverly Crawford and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In providing aid to the ailing economies of the former USSR and Eastern Europe, many Western governments fear that they may be leaving themselves vulnerable to fierce economic competition in the future. This study examines claims that vulnerability existed in Western economic relations with the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe from 1970 to 1990, and shows how the historical evidence undercuts the vulnerability assumptions that fueled the Reagan administration's foreign policy and were never systematically tested.

Book How China Escaped Shock Therapy

Download or read book How China Escaped Shock Therapy written by Isabella M. Weber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has become deeply integrated into the world economy. Yet, gradual marketization has facilitated the country’s rise without leading to its wholesale assimilation to global neoliberalism. This book uncovers the fierce contest about economic reforms that shaped China’s path. In the first post-Mao decade, China’s reformers were sharply divided. They agreed that China had to reform its economic system and move toward more marketization—but struggled over how to go about it. Should China destroy the core of the socialist system through shock therapy, or should it use the institutions of the planned economy as market creators? With hindsight, the historical record proves the high stakes behind the question: China embarked on an economic expansion commonly described as unprecedented in scope and pace, whereas Russia’s economy collapsed under shock therapy. Based on extensive research, including interviews with key Chinese and international participants and World Bank officials as well as insights gleaned from unpublished documents, the book charts the debate that ultimately enabled China to follow a path to gradual reindustrialization. Beyond shedding light on the crossroads of the 1980s, it reveals the intellectual foundations of state-market relations in reform-era China through a longue durée lens. Overall, the book delivers an original perspective on China’s economic model and its continuing contestations from within and from without.
