Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English National Opera Guides were originally conceived in partnership with the English National Opera and edited by Nicholas John, the ENO's dramaturg, who died tragically in an accident in the Alps. Most of the guides are devoted to a single opera, which is described in detail--with many articles that cover its history and information about the composer and his times. The complete libretto is included in both the original language and in a modern singing translation--except where the opera was written in English. Each has a thematic guide to the most important musical themes in musical notation and each guide is lavishly illustrated. They also contain a bibliography and a discography which is updated at each reprint. The ENO guides are widely regarded as the best series of their kind and excellent value. Die Meistersinger was enthusiastically received at its premiere in 1868, and was judged to be Wagner's most immediately appealing work. Eduard Hanslick wrote after the premiere: "Dazzling scenes of colour and splendour, ensembles full of life and character unfold before the spectator's eyes, hardly allowing him the leisure to weigh how much and how little of these effects is of musical origin."

These artisan-poets of Germany were some what different from the Minnesingers, who were more akin to the troubadours of France. The Master-singers were in a certain sense the outcome of the Minnesingers of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The Minnesingers were mostly of noble birth, and lived in kings' courts or wandered from castle to castle in 'the age of chivalry and the Crusades. Heinrich von Meissen, surnamed Frauenlobe, was a Min nesinger who was generally regarded as the founder of the schools and guilds of the Mas ter-singers. Book Barrie Kosky s Transnational Theatres

Download or read book Barrie Kosky s Transnational Theatres written by James Phillips and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first of its kind, surveys the career of the renowned Australian-German theatre and opera director Barrie Kosky. Its nine chapters provide multidisciplinary analyses of Barrie Kosky’s working practices and stage productions, from the beginning of his career in Melbourne to his current roles as Head of the Komische Oper Berlin and as a guest director in international demand. Specialists in theatre studies, opera studies, musical theatre studies, aesthetics, and arts administration offer in-depth accounts of Kosky’s unusually wide-ranging engagements with the performing arts – as a director of spoken theatre, operas, musicals, operettas, as an adaptor, a performer, a writer, and an arts manager. Further, this book includes contributions from theatre practitioners with first-hand experience of collaborating with Kosky in the 1990s, who draw on interviews with members of Gilgul, Australia’s first Jewish theatre company, to document this formative period in Kosky’s career. The book investigates the ways in which Kosky has created transnational theatres, through introducing European themes and theatre techniques to his Australian work or through bringing fresh voices to the national dialogue in Germany’s theatre landscape. An appendix contains a timeline and guide to Kosky’s productions to date.

Book Die Meistersinger Von Nu rnberg the Mastersingers of Nuremberg

Download or read book Die Meistersinger Von Nu rnberg the Mastersingers of Nuremberg written by Richard Wagner and published by Oneworld Classics. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English National Opera Guides are ideal companions to the opera. They provide stimulating introductory articles together with the complete text of each opera in English and the original. This opera has been described as "the longest single smile in the German language." But Roland Matthews indicates that violence is not far beneath the surface of this portrait of medieval Nuremberg. Arnold Whittall s analysis gives a bird s-eye view of the complexity of the score. Timothy McFarland explores the significance of the choice of subject: that nostalgia for a pre-industrial community, which was a symptom of the German nationalist movement. The long text has many subtleties which opera audiences can hardly appreciate without reading it, and the musical themes are numbered to indicate where they occur."
