Book excerpt: First flown in 1963, the Boeing 727 was skillfully designed to outclass its competitors and remained without a direct rival for nearly two decades. This jetliner was capable of being operated from short, unimproved airfields, while requiring minimal ground service equipment. In flight, it was a dream- fast, efficient, quiet, and comfortable. Although this book is about an airplane, it is as much about the people at Boeing who were undaunted and took the financial risks necessary to build a truly outstanding machine. Readers will learn technical aspects of the 727, along with taking a close look at the brilliant minds and reasoning behind the design through personal interviews and examining archive data. For the hobbyist, a model-building chapter is also included, which covers techniques for both first-time and experienced modelers.

Book Leaving on a Jet Plane

Download or read book Leaving on a Jet Plane written by William L. Ippolito and published by William Ippolito. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Captain's airline career is the story of the remarkable period in the 20th century we call "The Jet Age", one filled with adventure, tragedy, humor, good fortune and bad passengers. We learn of the adventures of Apple Core Annie, whose nickname "Hardcore" reveals much. There is the food fight at 35,000 feet, as 40 summer camp bound youths nearly destroy a Boeing 727, and the Christmas Eve riot as 200 New York bound passengers "duke it out" over no smoking seats. Never to be forgotten are the tragic events where close friends are killed in senseless training accidents and innocent passengers lives are lost in sometimes-inexplicable circumstances. Bankruptcies, deregulation, hijackings and famous people are all part of the memories of the veteran captain whose career spanned the era when the jet plane became mass transportation.--From cover

Download or read book Scapegoat written by Emilio Corsetti III and published by Odyssey Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 4, 1979, a Boeing 727 with 82 passengers and a crew of 7 rolled over and plummeted from an altitude of 39,000 feet to within seconds of crashing were it not for the crew’s actions to save the plane. The cause of the unexplained dive was the subject of one of the longest NTSB investigations at that time. While the crew’s efforts to save TWA 841 were initially hailed as heroic, that all changed when safety inspectors found twenty-one minutes of the thirty-minute cockpit voice recorder tape blank. The captain of the flight, Harvey “Hoot” Gibson, subsequently came under suspicion for deliberately erasing the tape in an effort to hide incriminating evidence. The voice recorder was never evaluated for any deficiencies. From that moment on, the investigation was focused on the crew to the exclusion of all other evidence. It was an investigation based on rumors, innuendos, and speculation. Eventually the NTSB, despite sworn testimony to the contrary, blamed the crew for the incident by having improperly manipulated the controls; leading to the dive. This is the story of a NTSB investigation gone awry and one pilot’s decade-long battle to clear his name.

Book The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear

Download or read book The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear written by Robert Kyle Schmidt and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aircraft landing gear and its associated systems represent a compelling design challenge: simultaneously a system, a structure, and a machine, it supports the aircraft on the ground, absorbs landing and braking energy, permits maneuvering, and retracts to minimize aircraft drag. Yet, as it is not required during flight, it also represents dead weight and significant effort must be made to minimize its total mass. The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear, written by R. Kyle Schmidt, PE (B.A.Sc. - Mechanical Engineering, M.Sc. - Safety and Aircraft Accident Investigation, Chairman of the SAE A-5 Committee on Aircraft Landing Gear), is designed to guide the reader through the key principles of landing system design and to provide additional references when available. Many problems which must be confronted have already been addressed by others in the past, but the information is not known or shared, leading to the observation that there are few new problems, but many new people. The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear is intended to share much of the existing information and provide avenues for further exploration. The design of an aircraft and its associated systems, including the landing system, involves iterative loops as the impact of each modification to a system or component is evaluated against the whole. It is rare to find that the lightest possible landing gear represents the best solution for the aircraft: the lightest landing gear may require attachment structures which don't exist and which would require significant weight and compromise on the part of the airframe structure design. With those requirements and compromises in mind,The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear starts with the study of airfield compatibility, aircraft stability on the ground, the correct choice of tires, followed by discussion of brakes, wheels, and brake control systems. Various landing gear architectures are investigated together with the details of shock absorber designs. Retraction, kinematics, and mechanisms are studied as well as possible actuation approaches. Detailed information on the various hydraulic and electric services commonly found on aircraft, and system elements such as dressings, lighting, and steering are also reviewed. Detail design points, the process of analysis, and a review of the relevant requirements and regulations round out the book content. The Design of Aircraft Landing Gear is a landmark work in the industry, and a must-read for any engineer interested in updating specific skills and students preparing for an exciting career.
