Book The Index of Self Destructive Acts

Download or read book The Index of Self Destructive Acts written by Christopher Beha and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day Sam Waxworth arrives in New York to write for the Interviewer, a street-corner preacher declares that the world is coming to an end. A data journalist and recent media celebrity—he correctly forecast every outcome of the 2008 election—Sam knows a few things about predicting the future. But when projection meets reality, life gets complicated. His first assignment for the Interviewer is a profile of disgraced political columnist Frank Doyle, known to Sam for the sentimental works of baseball lore that first sparked his love of the game. When Sam meets Frank at Citi Field for the Mets’ home opener, he finds himself unexpectedly ushered into Doyle’s crumbling family empire. Kit, the matriarch, lost her investment bank to the financial crisis; Eddie, their son, hasn’t been the same since his second combat tour in Iraq; Eddie’s best friend from childhood, the fantastically successful hedge funder Justin Price, is starting to see cracks in his spotless public image. And then there’s Frank’s daughter, Margo, with whom Sam becomes involved—just as his wife, Lucy, arrives from Wisconsin. While their lives seem inextricable, none of them know how close they are to losing everything, including each other. Sweeping in scope yet meticulous in its construction, The Index of Self-Destructive Acts is a remarkable family portrait and a masterful evocation of New York City and its institutions. Over the course of a single baseball season, Christopher Beha traces the passing of the torch from the old establishment to the new meritocracy, exploring how each generation’s failure helped land us where we are today. Whether or not the world is ending, Beha’s characters are all headed to apocalypses of their own making.

No one expected a skinny and poor young boy from the projects of Detroit to one day become one of the highest-selling rap artists of all time, but Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, never lost sight of his dream. Despite an unbelievable amount of odds stacked against him, the aspiring rap artist used his pain and turmoil to pour anger, hurt, and frustration into his rap lyrics. Book Will America Self Destruct

Download or read book Will America Self Destruct written by Walter H. Stern and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-01-20 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the United States is the world’s most powerful and influential nation. But will we still be preeminent in the year 3000 or even 100 years from now? Through a series of missteps, we are fraying the fabric woven by the Founding Fathers. We may be on the road to decline. In the context of making choices and taking risks, this book examines the areas in which we fail to live up to our best selves. Our foreign policy may be undermined by loss of sovereignty to supranational organizations. Internally, we are torn by the need to maintain an underclass spawned by racial strife and the drug scourge that is its inevitable concomitant. We distort the First Amendment by dragging religion into the abortion issue. We surrender to the dominance of politicians who regard public office as an income-producing career. These missteps are not beyond retrieve. There are remedies, examined in this book, that can redirect the United States to a path of still greater glory if we but make the bold choices and take the necessary risks to implement them. All of them are within our power to achieve.

  • ISBN : 1098035186
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book The Itinerant written by D G Bryant and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Itinerant: On Restoration, Revival, and Redemption is a story of wisdom and folly, wisdom being preferable to seeking pleasure. The work is not just a story but a study on life experiences: good, bad, useful, and useless. It is a definitive work describing the benefits of seeking wisdom and knowledge and developing a healthy fear of the Lord; seeking his wisdom, strength, and glory rather than seeking pleasure that ultimately leads to dead ends, often leaving one with a bitter taste and a feeling of emptiness. The work describes what restoration, revival, and redemption are and what they are not. This work takes a good long look at all sides of life, all types of fools, and how to avoid fools and foolishness that more often than not just lead to destruction. So if you are reading this blurb and getting ready to read this book, get ready for an adventurous ecclesiastical journey, and hopefully, if you do not already know, you will before you are done, that as a believer in Christ Jesus, you are not a physical being on a spiritual journey in this world, but you are a spirit being on a physical journey.

Book Programmed To Self Destruct

Download or read book Programmed To Self Destruct written by Dianne Khan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every entry in the book includes a verbal marker of depression or an outright mention of pain and hurting. Does it give the reader an opportunity to explore feelings? Of course it does. It occurs time and again. On that measure, Programmed to Self Destruct has to be counted a success. It feels simply barbaric to review this book, as if pondering on the aesthetics of the cries of pain. The aesthetics are excellent and works well, the writing is clear, direct, with minute details that startle even as the cumulative effect brings on numbness. I don't see a lot of middle preference for Programmed to Self Destruct; you'll either love it or you don't. Come to think of it, that all-or-nothing feeling, having to be the best or not exist at all. It's very painful. My heart wonders about Khan's true life experiences.
