Book Orthodontic Diagnosis

Download or read book Orthodontic Diagnosis written by Thomas Rakosi and published by Thieme. This book was released on 1993 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated guide for the complex process of orthodontic diagnostics and indication. The total process of treatment planning including the scientific bases is pictorially described. Beside the conventional methods of examination and model analysis, emphasis is placed on the cranio-facial growth processes, the aetiology of malocclusions and on the importance of functional analysis. The following three aspects are described in detail in this book: Growth of the Facial Skeleton - types of treatment which promote or guide growth. In order to control these natural processes artificially, a precise understanding of them is required. Aetiology of the Malocclusion - the various types of causative therapy and the elimination of the causes. Functional Analysis - many malocclusions are a result of dysfunctions. As a variety of methods are available for treating dysfunctions, functional analysis is taken very seriously.

Book Analysis of Upper Airway Functional and Dentofacial Changes During Non surgical Maxillary Expansion in Adults

Download or read book Analysis of Upper Airway Functional and Dentofacial Changes During Non surgical Maxillary Expansion in Adults written by Nikoo Habibnia and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: This analysis is part of an ongoing retrospective secondary pilot study on a randomized clinical trial. The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the effect of none-surgical maxillary expansion techniques on upper airway dimension and function, and skeletal and dental changes, using two different maxillary expanders: Moon and Dresden expanders. Methods: A sample of thirteen patients were randomly allocated to either group A or group B. Patients in group A (N=5) received orthodontic treatment using an appliance called Dresden expander. Patients in group B (N=8) received orthodontic treatment using the Moon expander. Two sets of records were taken for each patient; before starting treatment (T0) and after maxillary expansion completed (T1). Records consisted of the following: clinical charting and diagnostic exams, intra-oral and extraoral photos, cone beam computer tomography (CBCT), nasal obstruction symptom evaluation (NOSE) questionnaires, and peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF). The changes on the upper airway dimension and function were evaluated using CBCT scans (using Dolphin software), PNIF (objective measurement), and NOSE questionnaire (subjective measure). The skeletal and dental changes were evaluated using various skeletal and dental landmarks in CBCT using Avizo software. For upper airway changes and skeletal and dental changes, one-way repeated measure mixed ANOVA tests and paired sample t-tests were conducted. Results: For upper airway changes, from T0 to T1, no statistically significant differences were found between the Moon and the Dresden expander groups for nasopharynx volume (NPV), oropharynx volume (OPV), oropharynx minimal cross-sectional area (OPMCA), PNIF with both nostrils (PNIFBN), PNIF with left nostril blocked (PNIFLB), and PNIF with right nostril blocked (PNIFRB), and NOSE questionnaires. Also, both expanders showed to have no significant effect on upper airway dimensions and function. For skeletal and dental changes, Moon expander resulted in buccal displacement of pulp chamber of tooth # 1.6, 2.6, and 2.4 (p0.05). Conclusion: The effect of microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) appliances on upper airway dimension and function in adults is yet to be determined and future randomized controlled clinical trial studies with larger sample size are needed. In terms of skeletal and dental changes, the only statistically significant change was in the Moon expander group in transverse (X) direction for pulp chamber of upper first molars and upper left first premolar. However, such changes may not be clinically significant. No significant differences were found between the two appliance designs in this analysis.

Book Stability of Skeletal Alveolar and Dental Components in Microimplant supported Midfacial Skeletal Expander MSE Expansion

Download or read book Stability of Skeletal Alveolar and Dental Components in Microimplant supported Midfacial Skeletal Expander MSE Expansion written by Catherine Ding and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxillary transverse deficiency is one of the most common skeletal problems in the craniofacial region. Rapid palatal expansion (RPE) has been the preferred standard treatment when transverse deficit is present, especially in young patients. While the main goal of RPE is to split the midpalatal suture, the circum-maxillary sutures are also affected and alveolar bone bending, and dental tipping are common. The desire is to produce a greater skeletal effect than dentoalveolar side-effects; however, the latter are commonly expressed in substantive magnitude. In order to assess skeletal expansion, alveolar bone bending and dental tipping after maxillary expansion, linear and angular measurements has been performed utilizing different craniofacial references. Since the expansion with Midfacial Skeletal Expander (MSE) is archial in nature, the aim of this paper is to quantify the differential components of MSE expansion using an angular measurement system described in a previous study, and assessing the stability of each component after orthodontic treatment. Methods: A total of fourteen subjects with a mean age of 20.4 3.5 years were treated with MSE. Pre-expansion (T0), post-expansion (T1), and post-treatment (T2) CBCT records were superimposed and compared. Based on methods in a previous study, the rotational fulcrum of the zygomaticomaxillary complex were identified and angular measurements were generated to assess changes of the zygomaticomaxillary complex (skeletal expansion), dentoalveolar bone (alveolar bone bending), and maxillary first molars (dental tipping). The stability of all three components after orthodontic treatment were also assessed by comparing measurements between post-expansion and post-treatment. Results: Immediately following MSE expansion, angular measurements showed that skeletal expansion accounted for 87.50% and 88.56% of total expansion, alveolar bone bending for 7.09% and 5.23%, and dental tipping for 5.41% and 6.21% on the right and left sides, respectively. At the end of orthodontic treatment, data showed that skeletal expansion relapsed by 11.20% and 13.28% on the right and left sides, respectively. Changes in alveolar bone bending and dental tipping between post-expansion and post-treatment varied greatly due to orthodontic dental decompensation after expansion. Conclusions: Maxillary skeletal expansion using the microimplant-supported Midfacial Skeletal Expander (MSE) produces mainly skeletal changes with insignificant dentoalveolar changes immediately after expansion. In the long term, the majority of the skeletal expansion was maintained. Long-term dentoalveolar changes were in the magnitude of 300-1500% in the opposite direction, induced by orthodontic decompensation of the pre-existing dental compensation. However, net gains in the intermolar width were maintained despite these changes due to the long-term stability of skeletal expansion.

Book A Comparison of Dental and Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion and Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion

Download or read book A Comparison of Dental and Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion and Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion written by Christopher Ciambotti and published by . This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palatal expansion used to correct maxillomandibular transverse discrepancies occurs through a combination of skeletal (orthopedic) expansion, which involves separating the maxilla at the midpalatal suture, and dental (orthodontic) expansion, which results from buccal tipping of the maxillary posterior teeth. The proportion of skeletal and dental movement is dependent on the rate of expansion (rapid or slow) and the age of the patient during treatment. A The goal of palatal expansion is to maximize the skeletal movement and to minimize the dental movement, while allowing for physiological adjustment of the suture during separation.
