Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City of Trembling Leaves by Walter Van Tilburg Clark was first published in 1945 by Random House and reprinted by the University of Nevada Press in paperback in 1991 with a new foreword by Robert Laxalt. Clark’s novel broke new ground in his telling of the story of the rites of passage of a boy, Tim Hazard, into adulthood in the setting of the Western town of Reno, Nevada. The descriptions of Reno’s landscape and the realistic characters depict the role of nature during the tumultuous stages of adolescence and the potential risk of obstruction and loss in the attainment of maturity.
Download or read book A Tremor Through Time written by Michelle Contant and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tragic Coincidence A baby dies in a car accident on the way to a memorial mass, fifteen years to the day after the mining accident that took the life of his grandfather. This tragic coincidence set the stage for the author’s birth a year later. A Tremor Through Time is a memoir about the resilience of a young girl growing up in a family struggling with guilt and grief. It takes the reader from the author’s earliest memory of finding herself alone in a bus depot on her way home from kindergarten to her decision to leave home and attend university. The memoir moves between past and present connecting vignettes from the author’s youth—written from a child’s perspective—with contemporary scenes and conversations. Set in a northern mining town, moments of fun and friendship are interspersed with scenes of anger and apprehension that highlight an increasingly difficult relationship between father and daughter.

Book excerpt: I have been writing these essays (I like to call them stories) for a long time, the earliest being in 1984, and publishing some in Pakistani newspapers and some on blogs. Several times, I toyed with the idea of compiling these stories in a book form but was not sure of the usefulness of such an endeavor. One difficulty was the diversity of the subjects – from reminiscences to anecdotal history to folklore to so much else. It was not possible to assign a genre to the collection. It was only recently when a pen friend, Ejaz Rahim, who has also written one of the two generous forewords to this volume, prodded me in an email, saying, “The fact is humans die; the fiction is books continue to live.” I fell for the fiction, and hence this slim volume of mostly reminiscences about the people I came across or worked with and events I was part of. In short, it is about the world I left behind. I plan to publish the other essays in a second volume.
