Download or read book The Art of Wonk written by Dr. Robert C. Worstell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're picking this book up fresh, consider that you've really stepped in something. Over 5 decades of research and writing several dozen books wound us up here, polishing up one very unique question. It was the one thing I hadn't expected to need an answer: why winners think and believe as they do. In this book, we'll call the winners "Wonks." Because they figure things out. They are constantly looking at every problem as an opportunity. Everything else before this answered how. What I do know is that it isn't linear from here on out. It's exponential. What I've uncovered and am about to tell you leads right back to a complete new world with infinite possibilities. Far from tying up loose ends, it opens massive flood gates of possibilities. That's the world you just inherited by opening this book. Lucky you. But let me first tell you the underlying secret to how Wonks ended up ruling the world... Book Winter Brothers

Download or read book Winter Brothers written by Ivan Doig and published by HMH. This book was released on 1982-10-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blend of modern-day travel memoir and nineteenth-century history, “infused with the fresh air and spirit of the Northwest” (The New York Times Book Review). The author of the acclaimed This House of Sky and Mountain Time provides a magnificent evocation of the Pacific Northwest through his exploration of the unpublished diaries of James Gilchrist Swan, an early settler of the region who was drawn there from Boston in the 1850s. Winter Brothers fuses excerpts from these diaries with author Ivan Doig’s own journal entries, as he travels in Swan’s footsteps one winter along the once-wild coastline of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. What emerges is a remarkable interaction of two minds, a dialogue across time that links the present with the reality of the American frontier. “Absorbing . . . A double portrait of striking clarity, yet with wonderfully subtle hues.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book English Historical Linguistics 2008 Words texts and genres

Download or read book English Historical Linguistics 2008 Words texts and genres written by Ursula Lenker and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen papers selected for Volume II of English Historical Linguistics 2008 have a different emphasis than those in Volume I (CILT 314, Lenker et al. 2010). Nine concentrate on the development of the English vocabulary and six on historical text linguistics, including the development of text-types and of politeness strategies. Of those in the former group, three have their emphasis on etymology, three on semantic fields, and three on word-formation, although some cover more than one of these areas. The topics include: the treatment of etymological problems in the OED; deverbal derivations formed from native verbs and from loan-verbs; the role of metaphor and metonymy in the evolution of word-fields. The field of historical text linguistics is introduced by a general survey, which is followed by more specific studies focussing on 15th-century legal and administrative texts from Scotland, on early 15th-century women's mystical writings, on medical recipes from the 16th to the 18th centuries and on pauper letters from 18th-century Essex. The book should appeal to scholars interested in English etymology, the history of semantic fields and of word-formation, as well as in historical text linguistics, politeness strategies and standardization. It provides not only theoretical considerations but also a wealth of case studies.

Book The Beltway Bible

  • ISBN : 1250099250
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book The Beltway Bible written by Eliot Nelson and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every American’s owner’s manual for Washington D.C., our functionally dysfunctional seat of government. How is legislation crafted? How do you lose an election? What do “bundler,” “quorum call” and “omnibus” mean? Why do some of the White House’s most important meetings occur at a Starbucks? Why are Washington insiders obsessed with something called Jumbo Slice? What, exactly, is a “skintern?” Eliot Nelson, one of Washington’s funniest and most admired young journalists, knows how the sausage factory works and The Beltway Bible is every citizen's must-have owner’s manual. Arranged from A to Z, The Beltway Bible provides an insider's perspective of politics and government, breaking down both into easily-digested entries on subjects like how legislation is formed, the scope of the president’s power, and an overview of federal agencies. Nelson also looks at D.C.'s less-well-known power structures: the internal pecking order of White House aides, the high school cafeteria power struggles behind party invites and the petty congressional arguments over how highway on-ramps are named. The Beltway Bible makes our complex government accessible in a way that will please everyone from Jon Stewart to John Doe.

Book Incommunicado

  • Author : Randall Platt
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2014-11-04
  • ISBN : 1632202107
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Incommunicado written by Randall Platt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just about everyone is incommunicado in the small, sleepy Oregon coastal town of Sea Park during winter. Until Pearl Harbor, that is, when it springs to patriotic life. But is Ruby Opal Pearl (a.k.a. Jewels) Stokes the only person to see what’s really happening here? Tommy Kasamoto, the one person in her life who has provided security, shelter, and a smidgeon of respect—and who owns the biggest resort on the coast—is now the cause of the town’s rage. Tommy’s Japanese ancestry makes him the prime target of an angry mob, not to mention he’s also rich, has a shady past, and everyone in town owes him money. As the town's patriotism blossoms into paranoia and turns violent, Jewels has to do something to protect Tommy from internment (or worse), even if that something is going up against the town and the government, not to mention the FBI. Thus begins a fourteen-year-old girl’s war within a war. Randall Platt’s Incommunicado is both timely and timeless. It's about the meaning of courage and the willingness to stand up for what's right, even when it goes against the prevailing attitudes of the time and place. It's also about the insidious way groups and communities can nurture ignorance and prejudice. But most of all, it’s an adventure story set in a town full of unforgettable characters, during a time of great intrigue and peril, no matter which enemy or on what front you fight. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Book excerpt: Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs meets Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior in this thriller that races at breakneck pace--from the critically acclaimed author who gave Stephen Coonts "a nightmare for a week." Alfie Woodard always completes a mission. The skills he learned in the Australian Special Air Service have carried over to his new life as an Aboriginal spiritual leader and contract killer for drug lord Jay Burrell. Alfie knows how to stalk and kill a victim, then disappear without a trace. But it's the ritualistic murders and the devouring of his victims during the Aboriginal ceremony that send a clear message to Burrell's enemies. Charley Payne was losing it. He had spent his life as a door kicker for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in the world's hot spots. When his friend, Police Detective Sergeant Bobby Lee Martaine realized that Charley was becoming a danger to himself and his missions, Bobby Lee offered him a job. Trading in his guns for a camera, Charley finds his new life as a forensic photographer in the Twin Cities uneventful and peaceful—just what he needed, until Charley is called in to photograph a gruesome murder scene. There are no fingerprints and only one clue, a bizarre Aboriginal painting. Most in the police department begin to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. Bobby Lee is closing in on Alfie, but Alfie learned in the SAS that a mission is not complete if you've left a trail behind. When Bobby Lee and his family turn up dead, Charley returns to the way of the gun. But he will be fighting a war on the spiritual leader's turf in the Australian outback. A fight to the death that took place in the Aboriginal dream world five centuries before.
