Says all are well, except Lucy who was left in Newark with the Ogden's. Says Mr. Breck has hired three rooms in Newark because he has no hope of getting to Philadelphia in the coming months. Reports that she does not believe Congress will sit in Philadelphia, in reference to the yellow fever outbreak. Mentions the deaths of people they know, including the mother and sister of Benjamin Rush and [Major David] Franks. Rush also said that Mr. Blodget and Mr. Clymer were ill. Heard that on average 130 people have died in the last week. References receiving a note from [Philip] Audebert, a clerk in the War Department, stating he saw their sweet babe. Wants Knox to make a visit to his estates in Maine and to avoid Philadelphia. Does not believe it will be safe to go there until Christmas. Postscript tells Knox to be kind to his son. Place writ added in pencil.

Writes, It is the general opinion here that a war will take place between England and France, several officers of the British Navy are here at present, they are hurrying home by the first vessels. Notes Mr. Macomb has been released from jail upon the principles I lately mentioned to you. States Macomb's real estate is up for sale. Says no man lives more at his ease than Horatio Gates. Saw him at 3 dinner parties last week. Mentions that he is a warm democrat; the Baron says he is a good military man, but a bad politician. And that he has good terms at the Crugar house and farm, 2,000 for the rest of his life. Gates sells 400 of produce each year after supplying the needs of his family. Reports that Mr. Van Berckel, the Dutch ambassador to the U.S. and the husband of Madame de Leval, has purchased two lots of Courtland Street and will build a home. It appears he will not return to Europe. Postscript says, Gen. Gates says he hopes Colo. Hamilton will not think of going out, in consequence of the noisy conduct of some people, whose sole object is to get in themselves, this sentiment appears to prevail here both with respect to him and yourself.

There has been a head wind and no packets leaving, but he will leave on the first available transport. Wants his mother to write to General Jackson about his books and to remind his father about the gun. Reports his good health. Continued the letter on 18 November and apologized for the poor writing as he lacked a penknife.

Thanks William for his last several letters. Comments that he thinks William's motives are just for remaining in Europe until peace is achieved. Mentions the recent defeat of Comte de Grasse, and also relates that General George Washington has appointed him Commandant of West Point. Reports that he and his family resided in Philadelphia until they moved to the North River. Writes, All my little family have been much afflicted with sickness, and mentions that Mrs. Knox and Mary were ill with intermittent fevers but have recovered. Lucy was declining rapidly so they brought her to the North River for the pure air, and it has helped aid her recovery. Marcus has been suffering from a [dysentery?] a consequence of [getting] teeth. He fears that William will never have the pleasure to see him. A few days, perhaps a few hours may decide his fate.
