And a pin, too, she added in a lower voice, to pin it over the bravest heart in Beulah. General Harris, whose straw hat-brim seemed to rest on his strong hooked nose, and his nose on his short stiff grey moustache, threw up his head with quite a jerk of surprise, and halted. The heaviest heart, at any rate, said he. God bless you, Beth! And as she pinned the white flower to his black frock coat, he smiled. This will make the young fellows envious. Book The Sheep Book For Smallholders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This promises to be the only book on sheep you will ever need! All aspects of looking after the flock are covered, including selection, culling, nutrition, housing, lambing, grassland management, ailments and prevention. There are also sections on home slaughter and butcher, and, uniquely, processing the byproducts, including the fleece and keeping sheep for dairying. Unusually, the book also has a section on training sheepdogs. Supported by stunning photography and clear illustrations, as well as huge and useful appendices. This is a welcome addition to the smallholder's bookshelf, and is going to be a reference classic in years to come.

Book In the Footsteps of Sheep

Download or read book In the Footsteps of Sheep written by Debbie Zawinski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the Footsteps of Sheep details the completion of a mission the author, a Welsh-born Scot, set for herself: to travel and camp throughout Scotland, find cast off tufts of wool from 10 Scottish sheep breeds, then spin the wool on her spinning stick while walking (or waiting for ferries), and finally design and knit one pair of socks to represent each breed ... all the while writing about her adventures and taking plenty of photographs. Debbie has written beautifully about her journey; the hills, shorelines, and bogs explored; the sheep and people she met along the way; weather both foul and fair, and a particularly exciting chapter about the intriguing St. Kilda archipelago and its feral Soay and Boreray sheep. The eleven sock patterns, one at the end of each chapter, are a bonus and, for those of us unable to gather and spin our own fleece, all were test-knitted with commercial wool. The designs are knitted from top to toe with different motifs, among them color-patterns, cables, spirals, stripes, Kilt Hose with top-turnovers, and a pair of baby booties."--Provided from Amazon.com.

Book The History Structure Economy and Diseases of the Sheep Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History Structure Economy and Diseases of the Sheep Classic Reprint written by W. C. Spooner and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Structure, Economy and Diseases of the Sheep It rarely occurs that an Author is called upon to prepare a new edition of a book first published thirty years ago, and it cannot be surprising that such a work should demand considerable revision and addition. In supplying these wants, the same purpose which influenced the Author in the preparation of the original work obtains likewise with reference to this new edition: that is, to prepare a really useful and reliable book, and yet to keep within a certain allotted space. Whilst the anatomical and physiological portions have required but little alteration, both the historical and pathological divisions have demanded considerable additions. In the former, new breeds have sprung into existence, or been moulded into distinct characteristics by intelligent and observant breeders; and in the latter the experience of thirty years has brought new observations to the fore, and developed new ideas either controverting or supporting old theories, or exploding certain errors, and bringing to light important facts. Amongst the most laborious and the most successful of the explorers after truth in this department, the post of honour must undoubtedly be assigned to Professor Simonds, a fellow-pupil of the Author, and now Principal of the Royal Veterinary College. From his numerous communications to the Council, or its valuable publication, the "Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England," the author has freely quoted, using as much as possible the language of the writers. On subjects, however useful, relating to the diseases of a particular class of animals, he has felt that the best compliment that could be paid to the writers of valuable articles was to diffuse, as much as possible, their facts and observations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Nevertheless, agricultural science and litera ture are between them rapidly taking the romance out of it. Perhaps we should add, hard times, and the vital im portance of making things pay. It is a pity to lose the faculty of discerning the beauty of the dewy eve and rising moon, or listening as the amorous thrush concludes his song; or only to think of the price of mutton and of wool, or of lambs as fore and hind quarters. Book excerpt: A witty philosophical murder mystery with a charming twist: the crack detectives are sheep determined to discover who killed their beloved shepherd. On a hillside near the cozy Irish village of Glennkill, a flock of sheep gathers around their shepherd, George, whose body lies pinned to the ground with a spade. George has cared devotedly for the flock, even reading them books every night. Led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in Glennkill (and possibly the world), they set out to find George’s killer. The A-team of investigators includes Othello, the “bad-boy” black ram; Mopple the Whale, a Merino who eats a lot and remembers everything; and Zora, a pensive black-faced ewe with a weakness for abysses. Joined by other members of the richly talented flock, they engage in nightlong discussions about the crime, wild metaphysical speculations, and embark on reconnaissance missions into the village, where they encounter some likely suspects. Along the way, the sheep confront their own all-too-human struggles with guilt, misdeeds, and unrequited love. Funny, fresh, and endearing, it introduces a wonderful new breed of detectives to Canadian readers.
