Book Guidance Manual on Water Supply and Sanitation Programmes

Download or read book Guidance Manual on Water Supply and Sanitation Programmes written by WELL. and published by WEDC, Loughborough University. This book was released on 1998 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department for International Development DFID commissioned this Guidance Manual from the WELL Resource Centre to assist staff and partners to develop effective and sustainable water supply and sanitation programmes. It represents collaboration across a range of professions within the Department and from key UK professionals in the sector. It details inter-disciplinary approaches to planning and implementation of partnership-based programmes. The Manual comprises three chapters and appendices. These take the reader from an overview of the sector, through specific development perspectives, to detailed recommendations for each stage of the project cycle. Chapter 1 is an introduction to water supply and sanitation projects and sets the scene. It describes the WS&S sector with particular focus on the development of services for the poor in both urban and rural areas. Emphasis is placed on the importance of co-operation and partnership and the chapter also introduces the DFID programme and project process. Chapter 2 Principles and practice starts with an inter-disciplinary analysis of key issues and then sets out recommended approaches under seven perspectives: social development; health; environmental sustainability; economic and financial perspectives; institutional perspectives; technical aspects; and hygiene promotion and sanitation promotion. These are explored in some detail so that professional staff in DFID and its partners will gain a better understanding of all the aspects and not just their own speciality. Chapter 3 Water supply and sanitation in the DFID programme and project cycle is the 'how to' part of the manual which brings together the disciplinary perspectives at each stage of the project cycle. The key issues to be taken into account are set out in a helpful 'question and recommendation' format. Appendices include examples of logical frameworks for water supply and sanitation projects.

Book Water pollution Its impact on health and the environment and the need for water conservation

Download or read book Water pollution Its impact on health and the environment and the need for water conservation written by Vinitha S Babu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: In this work, the author classifies various human activities that cause pollution, discusses water pollution in detail according to their characteristics, and takes a general view of water pollution taking into effect the legal regime existing in India. In this context, an attempt has been made to assess the quality of water in the Jayakwadi reservoir. For the study of water quality important parameters such as pH, TDS, Temperature, EC, BOD and COD are considered. Water is one of the most indispensable resources and is the elixir of life. The value of surface water lies not only in its widespread occurrence and availability but also in its consistent good quality. Water pollution is a health hazard to people, and can be damaging to the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to manage the water quality of hydrological sources and predict the impact of contaminants on them. Water quality models can be used for a variety of different purposes, including analysing pollutant spills and predicting long-term water quality of surface water. In the recent years, environmental monitoring through regular assessment of water quality has become a crucial factor in the exploitation or conservation of aquatic resources. Control of water pollution has reached primary importance in development and a number of developing countries.
