Book excerpt: Research on nontraditional interests was first presented during the 1970's concerning women's vocational choice, and since then both women and men have challenged the boundaries of traditionally appropriate careers. Although there are studies focusing on nontraditionality of vocational interests, most have ignored potential predictors for nontraditional interests. This study attempts to demonstrate a relationship between nontraditionality of interests and the constructs of personality, self-efficacy, and sex. Personality was studied using the Big 5 factors measured by the International Personality Item Pool (Goldberg et al., 2006). Self-efficacy was studied using 16 specific facets measured by the Kuder Skills Assessment College-Adult Version (Rottinghaus, 2006). Finally, traditionality of interests was measured by an interest inventory constructed from the U.S. Women's Bureau (2005). The results reported herein indicate that sex and self-efficacy are significant predictors of interest in traditionally male and female interests, while personality is a predictor for traditional female interests.
