Book Seeds of Virtue and Knowledge

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maryanne Cline Horowitz
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1997-12-08
  • ISBN : 1400843774
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Seeds of Virtue and Knowledge written by Maryanne Cline Horowitz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-08 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging and thought-provoking study, Maryanne Cline Horowitz explores the image and idea of the human mind as a garden: under the proper educational cultivation, the mind may nourish seeds of virtue and knowledge into the full flowering of human wisdom. This copiously illustrated investigation begins by examining the intellectual world of the Stoics, who originated the phrases "seeds of virtue" and "seeds of knowledge." Tracing the interrelated history of the Stoic cluster of epistemological images for natural law within humanity--reason, common notions, sparks, and seeds--Horowitz presents the distinctive versions within the competing movements of Hellenistic Judaism and early Christianity, Augustinian and Thomist theologies, Christian mysticism and Kabbalah, and Erasmian Catholicism and the Lutheran Reformation. She demonstrates how the Ciceronian and Senecan analogies between horticulture and culture--basic to Italian Renaissance humanists, artists, and neo- Platonists--influence the emergence of emblems and essays among participants in the Northern Renaissance neo-Stoic movement. The Stoic metaphor is still visible today in ecumenical movements that use vegetative language to encourage the growth of shared values and to promote civic virtues: organizations disseminate information on nipping bad habits in the bud and on turning a new leaf. The author's evidence of illustrated pages from medieval, Renaissance, and Enlightenment texts will stimulate contemporary readers to evaluate her discovery of "the premodern scientific paradigm that the mind develops like a plant."

Book Aristotle On Youth and Old Age Life and Death and Respiration 1 6

Download or read book Aristotle On Youth and Old Age Life and Death and Respiration 1 6 written by Giouli Korobili and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the last part of Aristotle’s collection of short treatises known today as the Parva Naturalia, i.e. the treatise On Youth and Old Age, on Life and Death, on Respiration. In the three main sections of the book, the author offers a translation, a commentary and a thorough analysis of this work. The author argues in favour of the unity of the work and contextualises its ideas within Aristotle’s corpus and the medical tradition of his time. After an Introduction to the nature of the work and its significance for the history of natural philosophy and science, a new English translation follows, along with a detailed commentary of Chapters 1-6, which combines philosophical discussion with philological observations. The book includes four interpretive essays, which tackle problems related to the whole treatise on a more philosophical basis, including questions about the structure and unity of the work, the organisation of the material, Aristotle’s methodological principles, his aims and target audience as well as the relevance of his selected themes to the thematic agenda of some Hippocratic writings. This book is of interest to students and researchers in Aristotle’s psychophysiology, and his views about the embodied mind, as well as to anyone concerned with the history of natural philosophy and science more generally.

Book Answer to the Pelagians

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saint Augustine (of Hippo)
  • Publisher : New City Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 1565481291
  • Pages : 770 pages

Download or read book Answer to the Pelagians written by Saint Augustine (of Hippo) and published by New City Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine was writing the Unfinished Work in Answer to Julian, published in this volume, when he died in August 430. The Unfinished Work is a rebuttal of Julian of Eclanum's To Florus, an eight-book text in defense of Pelagianism, which had by then been officially condemned by the Church. Augustine and Julian had previously written responses to excerpts of one another's work, though not in direct correspondence. In Unfinished Work, however, Augustine writes as though speaking to Julian directly, making for an engaging and clear read. He quotes each point of To Florus to which he responds, so the reader gains a comprehensive picture of his opponent's views. Once again, Augustine defends grace as a gift from God and Jesus as the savior of all humanity.
