Download or read book Gay Girl Good God written by Jackie Hill Perry and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I used to be a lesbian.” In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could? At age nineteen, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians. God broke in and turned her heart toward Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel. Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.

Download or read book First Time for Everything written by Henry Fry and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “big-hearted” (The Daily Beast), “LOL-worthy” (Cosmopolitan) debut about a down-on-his-luck gay man working out how he fits into the world, making up for lost time, and opening himself up to life’s possibilities “Part of a new wave of authors releasing uplifting queer literature that casts its characters as the heroes of their lives . . . crammed with blossoming romances and glittery escapism.”—The Guardian Danny Scudd is absolutely fine. He always dreamed of escaping the small-town life of his parents’ fish-and-chip shop, moving to London, and becoming a journalist. And, after five years in the city, his career isn’t exactly awful, and his relationship with pretentious Tobbs isn’t exactly unfulfilling. Certainly his limited-edition Dolly Parton vinyls and many (maybe too many) house plants are hitting the spot. But his world is flipped upside down when a visit to the local clinic reveals that Tobbs might not have been exactly faithful. In fact, Tobbs claims they were never operating under the “heteronormative paradigm” of monogamy to begin with. Oh, and Danny’s flatmates are unceremoniously evicting him because they want to start a family. It’s all going quite well. Newly single and with nowhere to live, Danny is forced to move in with his best friend, Jacob, a flamboyant nonbinary artist whom he’s known since childhood, and their eccentric group of friends living in an East London “commune.” What follows is a colorful voyage of discovery through modern queer life, dating, work, and lots of therapy—all places Danny has always been too afraid to fully explore. Upon realizing just how little he knows about himself and his sexuality, he careens from one questionable decision (and man) to another, relying on his inscrutable new therapist and housemates to help him face the demons he’s spent his entire life trying to repress. Is he really fine, after all?

Download or read book Scenes From a Misbegotten Life written by Victoria Maiden and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2024-08-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if your whole life was like a badly written play? Asinine plot, tedious dialogue, poorly paced performance, dreadful costumes. Would you walk out of the theater, or stay until the final curtain call, hoping it would get better? This is the kind of decision our protagonist must make as she grapples with and chronicles her messy and lopsided life, from preadolescence to senior citizen, in a captivating memoir that often reads like a novel. Scenes From a Misbegotten Life features fascinating characters, bizarre events, impossible situations, even a bit of suspense. It takes the reader from the crooked streets of Greenwich Village to the Greek Isles, from the garish colors of Hollywood Boulevard to the ancient ruins of Rome. But this book is far from fiction. Rather it is a ruthlessly candid case history of a woman whose life has been marred by mental illness in various and surprising ways, not only as a sufferer herself but as witness to the struggles of similarly afflicted family members and friends. This is the kind of sickness that can be as plain as day, but just as often is subtle, insidious, and invisible to outsiders. Yet it plagues millions of our friends and neighbors. Perhaps it is time to take it out of the closet. Scenes From a Misbegotten Life pulls back the curtain and offers a vivid glimpse of what it looks like and feels like to wrestle with this condition on a daily basis. *** The thrill of getting her first transistor radio, flipping baseball cards with the boys on the block, chalking up the sidewalk to play hopscotch with the girls, watching I Love Lucy and Leave It to Beaver on a black and whiteTV. Just some of the fond recollections prized by a child of 1950s-era New York City. Victoria Maiden was raised in a solid working-class neighborhood in the Bronx, at a time when America's future looked so innocent, so full of possibilities. The first member of her family to attend college, she looked forward to a career in publishing, law, or academia. But Fate had other plans, as painstakingly revealed in the pages of this unusual memoir. Today she lives by herself less than fifteen minutes from where she grew up, surrounded by books, music, and memories.

Download or read book Gay Seattle written by Gary L. Atkins and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2004 Washington State Book Award Winner of a 2004 Alpha Sigma Nu (ASN) Jesuit Book Award In 1893, the Washington State legislature quietly began passing a set of laws that essentially made homosexuality, and eventually even the discussion of homosexuality, a crime. A century later Mike Lowry became the first governor of the state to address the annual lesbian and gay pride rally in Seattle. Gay Seattle traces the evolution of Seattle’s gay community in those 100 turbulent years, telling through a century of stories how gays and lesbians have sought to achieve a sense of belonging in Seattle. Gary Atkins recounts the demonization of gays by social crusaders around the turn of the century, the earliest prosecutions for sodomy, the official harassment and discrimination through most of the twentieth century, and the medical discrimination and commitment to mental hospitals that continued into the 1970s as homosexuality was diagnosed as a disease that could be "cured." Places of refuge from this imposed social exile were created in underground theater and dance clubs: the Gold Rush-era burlesque shows, modern drag theater, and in mid-century the emergence of openly gay bars, from the Casino to Shelley’s Leg. Many of these were subjected to steady exploitation by corrupt police - until bar owner MacIver Wells and two Seattle Times reporters exposed the racket. The increasingly public presence of gays in Seattle was accompanied by the gradual coalescence of social services and self-help organizations such as the Dorian Society, gay businesses and advocacy groups including the Greater Seattle Business Association, and the stormy relationship between the Vatican, Seattle's Catholic hierarchy, and gay worshippers. Atkins’ narrative reveals the complex and often frustrating process of claiming a civic life, showing how gays and lesbians have engaged in a multilayered struggle for social acceptance against the forces of state and city politics, the police, the media, and public opinion. The emergence of mainstream political activism in the 1970s, and ultimately the election of Cal Anderson and other openly gay officials to the state legislature and city council, were momentous events, yet shadowed by the devastating rise of AIDS and its effect on the homosexual community as a whole. These stories of exile and belonging draw on numerous original interviews as well as case studies of individuals and organizations that played important roles in the history of Seattle’s gay and lesbian community. Collectively, they are a powerful testament to the endurance and fortitude of this minority community, revealing the ways a previously hidden sexual minority "comes out" as a people and establishes a public presence in the face of challenges from within and without.
