Book Transient Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Transient Phase Conjugation written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 3 years, material damage thresholds have been investigated as well as the magnitudes and response times of nonlinear susceptibilities of several important classes of optical materials. In addition, the Modified Twyman-Green Interferometer (MTGI) was invented. The MTGI determines both the magnitude and phase of the nonlinear susceptibility of a material relative to a known standard. This device has found significant acceptance within the optics research community. A phenomenon where energy may be exchanged between two frequency degenerate laser pulses has been characterized. Experimental investigations of optical phase conjugation via degenerate four wave mixing and beam coupling via degenerate two wave mixing using several nonlinear materials are compared. The components of the various physical phenomena which determine a nonlinear optical response as well as the interactions between these components are described. The strengths and weaknesses of the various optical materials and the utility of the MTGI are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.

Book Degenerate Four wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation in a Collisional Plasma

Download or read book Degenerate Four wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation in a Collisional Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) has many practical applications in the visible regime, no successful attempt has been made to study or demonstrate DFWM for wavelengths longer than 10.mu.m. Recently, Steel and Lam established plasma as a viable DFWM and phase conjugation (PC) medium for infrared, far-infrared, and microwaves. However, their analysis is incomplete since collisional effects were not included. Using a fluid description, our results demonstrate that when collisional absorption is small and the collisional mean-free path is shorter than the nonlinear density grating scale length, collisional heating generates a thermal force which substantially enhances the phase conjugate reflectivity. When the collisional attenuation length becomes comparable to the length of the plasma, the dominant effect is collisional absorption of the pump waves. Numerical estimates of the phase conjugate reflectivity indicate that for modest power levels, gains greater than or equal to1 are possible in the submillimeter to centimeter wavelength range. This suggests that a plasma is a viable PC medium at those long wavelengths. In addition, doubly DFWM is discussed.

Book Phase Conjugation in a Layer of Nonlinear Material

Download or read book Phase Conjugation in a Layer of Nonlinear Material written by Henk F. Arnoldus and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical phase conjugation, or time reversal, of an optical wave front is an important technique to correct distortions in electromagnetic waves which are built up during propagation through a medium. The authors have studied theoretically optical phase conjugation through four-wave mixing in a slab of non-linear material. When two strong counter-propagating laser beams irradiate a non-linear crystal, the third-order susceptibility is activated, and can couple to an external weak probe field. A four-wave mixing process then generates a phase-conjugated or time-reversed replica of this incident probe field. They investigated the mechanism of the production of phase-conjugated radiation in such a configuration by solving the non-linear Maxwell equations for the electric field. The electric field in the material satisfies a set of two coupled wave equations, which couple positive and negative frequency components of the electric field. It is shown that the polarisation of the pumps and the tensorial nature of the interaction can be accounted for by a simple polarisation operator in the wave equations. Maxwell's equations for the field in the layer admit plane-wave solutions, although the dispersion relations are very different from the usual linear relation between the frequency and the wave number. The coupling between the two waves exhibits a strong resonance near the frequency of the pump beams. These plane-wave modes can be matched across the boundaries of the layer to the probe field. The response of the material can then be expressed in terms of Fresnel reflection and transmission coefficients for both s- and p-polarisation. We have derived simple matrix equations for the set of Fresnel coefficients, which can be solved numerically, and the have also obtained closed-form analytical solutions for the various Fresnel coefficients. It is indicated that our solutions reduce to earlier results in the appropriate limits.

Book Coherent Control of Four Wave Mixing

Download or read book Coherent Control of Four Wave Mixing written by Yanpeng Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-30 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Coherent Control of Four-Wave Mixing" discusses the frequency, temporal and spatial domain interplays of four-wave mixing (FWM) processes induced by atomic coherence in multi-level atomic systems. It covers topics in five major areas: the ultrafast FWM polarization beats due to interactions between multi-color laser beams and multi-level media; coexisting Raman-Rayleigh-Brillouin-enhanced polarization beats due to color-locking noisy field correlations; FWM processes with different kinds of dual-dressed schemes in ultra-thin, micrometer and long atomic cells; temporal and spatial interference between FWM and six-wave mixing (SWM) signals in multi-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) media; spatial displacements and splitting of the probe and generated FWM beams, as well as the observations of gap soliton trains, vortex solitons, and stable multicomponent vector solitons in the FWM signals. The book is intended for scientists, researchers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Nonlinear Optics. Dr. Yanpeng Zhang is a professor and Zhiqiang Nie is a Ph. D. student at the Key Laboratory for Physical Electronics and Devices of the Ministry of Education, Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. Dr. Min Xiao is a professor of physics at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, U.S.A.

Download or read book Forward Phase Conjugate Wave in Degenerate Four Wave Mixing DFWM in Photorefractive Crystalline Slab written by H. Y. Zhang and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DFWM as an useful tool to generate phase conjugate waves has recently been the subject of intensive study. In particular photorefractive crystals such as lithium niobates, potassium niobates, barium titanates and SBN are widely used. Among the published papers on DFWM most are concerned with backward phase conjugate waves and only a few with forward phase conjugate, waves. In both of these papers the intensity of the forward phase conjugate wave has not been investigated. We report here a systematic study of the intensity of forward phase conjugate wave.

Book Beam Combining by Phase Transition Nonlinear Media

Download or read book Beam Combining by Phase Transition Nonlinear Media written by Victor Wang and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocketdyne a division of Rockwell International, is conducting this research program to study, develop, and demonstrate the use of a gas or liquid near a phase transition as an efficient phase conjugation material. We expect to observe enhanced efficiencies of Degenerate Four Wave Mixing (DFWM) and Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in liquids undergoing cavitation (also referred to as incipient or nucleate boiling or as superheated) or in gases undergoing supersaturated (supercooled) condensation. We will achieve these nonequilibrium conditions via the sudden pressure drop obtained by flowing the fluid through a nozzle. Since the change of state from liquid to gas can be made to occur more readily near the fluid's critical point as compared with other conditions, we are choosing to work with fluids whose critical points are near room temperature, thus simplifying problems of thermal control.
