Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘May the army of millions of dead of all nations bear witness to humanity for the hope that future generations may learn to discard war as the best way to resolve their differences.’ - Helmut Schneider This is the little-known story of Heavy Panzer (Tiger) Battalion 507 told through the recollections of the men who fought with the unit. The book was conceived during a reunion of the ‘507’ at Rohrdorf in 1982, where it was agreed to set up an editorial committee under Helmut Schneider, himself a veteran of the battalion, to search for as many survivors of the unit as possible and gather their reminiscences. The resulting account is a treasure trove of first-hand material, from personal memories, diary entries and letters to leave passes, wartime newspaper cuttings, Wehrmacht bulletins and more than 160 photographs. The account follows the unit from its formation in 1943 and the catastrophic events on the Eastern Front, through battles on the Western Front and engagements against the American 3rd Armoured Division to the confusion of retreat, panic-stricken flight and Soviet captivity in the closing stages of the war. Honest and unflinching, this remarkable collection of autobiographies offers a glimpse into life in Hitler’s panzer division and is a stark testimony of a generation that sacrificed its best years to the war. This is the first English-language translation of the work.

One of their most recognizable features is their bright orange colored fur and black stripes. But did you know that there is a reason for these black stripes? Do you know why the tigers have these black stripes? You may know that the tiger is a descendant of the saber tooth tiger. But did you know that the tigers weren’t always the size that you see today? Are you aware that all of the tigers are on the endangered species list, and run a risk of becoming extinct? There are laws in place worldwide to save and protect these big cats. Welcome to the world of tiger, as we explore the many regions they live in, and learn more about these powerful, skillful hunters.

Book excerpt: One of NPR's Best Books of the Year From the author of Nothing to Declare, a moving travel narrative examining healing, redemption, and what it means to be a solo woman on the road. In February 2008, a casual afternoon of ice skating derailed the trip of a lifetime. Mary Morris was on the verge of a well-earned sabbatical, but instead she endured three months in a wheelchair, two surgeries, and extensive rehabilitation. One morning, when she was supposed to be in Morocco, Morris was lying on the sofa reading Death in Venice, casting her eyes over these words again and again: “He would go on a journey. Not far. Not all the way to the tigers.” Disaster shifted to possibility and Morris made a decision. When she was well enough to walk again, she would go “all the way to the tigers.” So begins a three-year odyssey that takes Morris to India on a tiger safari in search of the world’s most elusive apex predator. Written in over a hundred short chapters accompanied by the author’s photographs, this travel memoir offers an elegiac, wry, and wise look at a woman on the road and the glorious, elusive creature she seeks.

Book Tiger vs Churchill

Download or read book Tiger vs Churchill written by Neil Grant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-20 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully illustrated study assesses the origins, development, and combat record of the legendary Tiger and Churchill Tanks during World War II. The Tiger and the Churchill are two of the most recognizable heavily armoured tanks of World War II. Both were designed hastily in the early years of the war, and both witnessed inauspicious debuts in battle in August 1942 (the Churchill in the disaster at Dieppe, the Tiger near Leningrad). Despite their heavy weight, both tanks, which were intended to serve in breakthrough operations, had surprisingly good tactical mobility. Yet there were key differences between them too, chiefly in the effectiveness of their main armament. This fascinating and detailed work explores the design and development of these famous tanks and its influence on their head-to-head encounters, the effectiveness of the support services each tank relied upon, and the skills and experiences of the crews that fought in them. The specific battlefield conditions of Normandy in June and July 1944 are also examined, exploring the effect they had on the duels between these two heavyweight AFVs.

Book excerpt: A fully illustrated guide to the German Tiger I tank and its operations in the field by the renowned expert on WWII armored vehicles. At Hitler’s insistence, the first Tiger I tanks drove into action in Tunisia in December 1942. Despite their lack of reliability and the small number deployed, they quickly gained a fierce reputation. With its heavy armor and 88mm gun, the Tiger I outclassed all the Allied tanks then in service. Beyond their deployment in North Africa, they also operated in Sicily and Italy between 1943 and 1945. In his second volume in the TankCraft series on the Tiger, Dennis Oliver uses archive photos and extensively researched color illustrations to examine the Tiger tank and the German army units that first took them into combat. Perfect for model enthusiasts, Tiger I showcases available model kits and aftermarket products. It also includes a gallery of beautifully constructed and painted models in various scales. Technical details, as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field, are also examined providing everything the modeler needs to recreate an accurate representation of the tanks.

Book Tiger

Download or read book Tiger written by Stephen Mills and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tigers are the world's most charismatic animals. Supple and powerful, long, lean and intense, with expressive tails, changeable amber eyes and giant teddy bear-like paws, they fascinate even confirmed non-naturalists. But sadly tigers are critically endangered and the truth is that we do not know how many there are left. Some suspect there could be as few as 5000 wild tigers worldwide. religious significance and supernatural potency. In fact, tigers are revered even in the Sundarbans where they claim several human victims a year. However, only a tiny percentage of tigers ever kill humans, and the total number of their victims is very small - perhaps surprising given that people are constantly encroaching on their territory. Stephen Mills offers some intriguing ideas about tiger kills, querying whether the impact of humans could actually be changing the behaviour of tigers in the wild, and reveals how shrinking habitats are confining tigers, forcing them to live in unnaturally high densities in some areas, with surprising results. tigers in the field, Stephen deals with every aspect of tiger behaviour: from their social structures, breeding patterns and family life, to their eating habits and how they communicate and interact. He also discusses recent attempts to conserve tigers, offering a possible blueprint for the future, and provides up-to-date information on how and where to try and see tigers in the wild.

Download or read book The Tiger Killers written by Luo Guanzhong and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tiger Killers is the second volume of a new translation of the Chinese classical novel generally known as The Water Margin. Like the first volume, The Broken Seals, it follows the fortunes of various outlaw heroes as they move through a world of treacherous officials, jealous toadies, bullying gaolers, hired assassins, foolhardy generals and cannibalistic innkeepers. This volume contains some of the most famous scenes in the novel, starting with the episode in which Wu Song gets drunk at the tavern, ascends the pass in late evening and kills a notorious man-eating tiger with his bare hands. His subsequent encounter with his midget brother's flirtatious wife, Jinlian or Golden Lotus, and her vain attempt to seduce him lead into a tale of adultery, callous murder and bloody vengeance. The second half of the book is concerned with Song Jiang's attempts to serve out his prison sentence honourably and avoid becoming an outlaw, until he is unjustly condemned to death for a misconstrued poem. Towards the end of this volume we meet the violent Li Kui, variously known as Iron Ox or Black Whirlwind, who also turns out to have a way with tigers. This volume consists of chapters 23 to 43 of the full 120-chapter version of the novel by Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong. It is the first English translation based on this version.
