There are many points of view from which a subject can be looked at there are many paths by which it may be approached and to me, other points of view, other modes Of approach, have been far more enticing than those adopted in our standard treatises. The old and tried method in therapeutics is that of empiricism, or, if the term sounds harsh, Of clinical experience. As stated by one Of its most ardent supporters, the best possible development of this plan of investigation is to be found in a close and careful analysis Of cases before and after the administration Of a remedy, and, if the results be favorable, the continued use of the drug in similar cases. It is evident that this is not a new path, but a highway already worn with the eager but weary feet of the profession for two thousand years. That very much has been thus accomplished it were folly to deny. Leaving out of sight the growth Of the last two decades, almost all of the current therapeutic knowledge has been gained in this way. He must never confound his patient with the disease; it is the patient who has the disease that he is called upon to treat. Hence the therapist must individualize the man, woman or child who comes to him for treatment. Fred Shattuck, of Boston, once said, The surgeon's knife is in reality a confession of failure in so far as it is used for the relief of pathological surgery. We should go a step farther and still call it therapy when the physician decides that opera tive intervention is needed and is advisable. But the internist should not wholly release his patient to the Operating surgeon, but should control and manage his pre - operative, post-opera tive, and convalescent periods with, of course, consultation with the surgeon. Surgeons are often not alert to physiologic disturbances in their Operated cases, and hence do not properly manage such disturbances, and many a surgical patient gets well in spite of the post-operative treatment rather than on account Of it. Also, the operated patient is often a case to the skilled, busy operator; but it is a fact that proper medical care after the Operation will very many times prevent long, tedious convalescence, and may even prevent permanent invalidism. The writer more than ever realizes the impossibility of making any text-book a complete treatise, and especially so in therapeutics, the science and art of which are advancing so rapidly. Much new matter has been added, among which are: A chapter on Insanity and Drug Addictions, for which the author desires to thank Dr. Jessie H. Simpson of the Southern California State Hospital for the Insane; a section on Prescription Writing and Treatment Combinations; and one on Hydrotherapeutic Apparatus and Treatment Rooms. For conducting an original research into the effects of tonic hydrotherapy upon the metabolism of individuals on a low proteid diet, the author is indebted to his colleague, Dr. E. H. Risley.
