Book A Concise View of the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Protestant and Roman Churches Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Concise View of the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Protestant and Roman Churches Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Wharton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise View of the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Protestant and Roman Churches The two first and the third of the tracts here published, have* for some years past been frequently called for, and the author has been repeatedly solicited to allow a new edition of them. Motives of delicacy only, have prevented his compliance. He was unwilling to renew any uneasy feelings in the breast of the venerable writer of the Ad dress to the Roman Catholics in the United States of Ame rica, for whom, notwithstanding many illiberal insinua tions in this address, he never ceased to entertain sincere esteem and attachment. By the decease Of Archbishop Carroll, every disinclination and Obstacle to the republica tion of these tracts, is removed. They who may now enter the lists against them, will not be able to advance any thing unnoticed by him, and therefore no dread is entertained of their being refuted. If it should be said, that publications of this nature are only calculated to nourish the acrimonious spirit of controversy, which Christian charity should rather strive to suppress, let the reader turn to the Appendix to the Catholic Question, published at new-york in 1813, and candidly determine whether such a wanton attack upon the Protestant faith, did not call for more severe animad version than that which it received. Book Manual of Romish Controversy

Download or read book Manual of Romish Controversy written by Richard P. Blakeney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Romish Controversy: Being a Complete Refutation of the Creed of Pope Pius IV I. "I most stedfastly admit and embrace Apostolic and Ecclesiastical Traditions, and all other observances and constitutions of the same Church. II. "I also admit the Holy Scripture, according to that sense which our Holy Mother, the Church, has held and does hold, to which it belongs, to judge of the true sense and interpretation of the Scriptures; neither will I ever take and interpret them otherwise than according to the unanimous consent of the Fathers." - First Two Article of Creed of Pope Pius IV. All admit the necessity of a rule or standard of faith, 25. The Romish Rule theoretically is Scripture and Tradition, 25. The Council of Trent pays equal respect to Scripture and Tradition. According to Rome (quotation from Bossuet) there is an unwritten word, as well as written, 26. The Romish Rule practically is the Decrees of Popes, or Councils sanctioned by Popes, 27. Dr. Milner quoted in proof, 27. Romish Arguments (answered): 1. Before the Mosaic age there was no written law. Answer - Then less necessary than now, and yet corruption prevailed, 27. 2. All that Christ did is not written. Answer - All is written that is essential, 28. 3. The disciples were not fully instructed by Christ. Answer - They were fully instructed after the Pentecost, 28. 4. The Apostles command the ordinances to be kept. Answer - All is written that is essential, 28. 5. "The rest will I set in order when I come." Answer - the same as No. 4, 28. 6. Whatever was delivered by the Apostles is to be held fast. Answer - Most true; but Rome cannot prove that her Traditions are apostolic, 29. 7. The exhortation to "hold fast the form of sound words" only proves the necessity of adhering to apostolic teaching, 29. 8. All that is essential about the Apostles is written, 29. Tradition not the Rule. 1. Oral Tradition untrustworthy, 30. Scriptural case proving this from John xxi. 22, 23. 30. 2. The Fathers contradict each other, 30. 3. The Romish Rule inaccessible, 31. 4. Tradition is condemned by Christ, and by the apostles, 32. Rome cannot prove her Tradition divine, 32. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
