Book For Party or Country

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frans Coetzee
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1990-06-28
  • ISBN : 0195362780
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book For Party or Country written by Frans Coetzee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-06-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Hugh Cecil, commenting in 1912 on the British Conservative party's staying power, said that the party's success was largely a matter of temperament, "recruited from...the natural conservatism that is found in almost every human mind." The Conservatives regarded the parties of the left as faddists or federations of pressure groups. In this thorough analysis, Coetzee examines the condition of the Conservative party during the two decades preceding World War I--a transitional period for the party, marked by the foundation of an unprecedented number of conservative pressure groups. Cecil's comment, Coetzee argues, obscures the extent to which conservative pressure groups forced their party to adapt in Edwardian England. The British Navy League, the Tariff Reform League, the Anti-Socialist Union, and a host of other groups changed the face of British conservatism, though not without considerable internal party conflict. In addition to providing a complete account of the pressure groups' origins, organizations, successes, and failures, Coetzee ties their histories to the debates within the Conservative party itself, and to the local elections. In so doing, he demonstrates how the party of the right was ultimately able to convince the electorate that its views were more "national" and "patriotic" than those of the parties of the left.

Book Commissions High

  • Author : Roy MacLaren
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0773560122
  • Pages : 580 pages

Download or read book Commissions High written by Roy MacLaren and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commissions High is an account of the work of the Canadian High Commission from 1870 until Britain's entry into the European Common Market one hundred years later. Roy MacLaren argues that, until the defeat of Diefenbaker in 1963, there was tension between the forces of imperial (later Commonwealth) solidarity and those of localized nationalism. Commissions High explores how localized nationalism led Canadian politicians to resist British efforts to centralize imperial decision-making and shows how the weakening of Commonwealth and transatlantic bonds following World War II contributed to Britain's focus on Europe and to the increasing domination of Canada by the United States.

Book Parkin

Download or read book Parkin written by William Christian and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2008-09-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Parkin was born the thirteenth child of an immigrant New Brunswick farmer and died a knight of the realm and perhaps the most famous Canadian in the world. Charismatic, charming, eloquent and dedicated, Parkin devoted his immense energy to two causes. As an orator and journalist, he worked to strengthen the bonds between the English-speaking peoples; as Principal of Upper Canada College and Founding Secretary of the Rhodes Scholarships he promoted a vision of education primarily as the formation of character, not the training of the intellect. This beautifully written and witty biography is a story of ideas lived through Parkin and those in his wide circle of influence with leaders of many countries. He was one of the first Canadians to see the development of globalization, and produced that famous map to demonstrate his vision, the British Empire all in red, Canada huge and dominating in the centre. His passionate opposition to free trade and eventual annexation by the United States mark him as an eloquent and prophetic visionary of Canada’s fate under NAFTA. Author William Christian’s own life in Parkin’s footsteps and rich sensitivity to Parkin’s story is on full display in this masterful biography. Political science professor at University of Guelph, well-known journalist and political commentator, Christian is an acknowledged authority on the intersection of philosophy, political life, communication theory and public purpose.

Book Forgotten Patriot

Download or read book Forgotten Patriot written by J. Lee Thompson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work covers the entire sweep of Milner's career, exploring fully in themselves overlooked areas, including Milner's place in the newspaper "information milieu," his attempts to bring working men into the Unionist fold (before, during, and after the Great War), his conspiratorial role in the 1914 Ulster Crisis, his key, but mostly forgotten, place in the First World War, the Peace of Paris and, throughout, his private life. The book reveals, as has no other, relationships with Margot Tennant (later Asquith), to whom Milner first proposed marriage, his mistress Cecile Duval, the novelist Elinor Glyn, and his two-decades-long liaison with Violet Cecil, who became his wife in 1921, only four years before Milner's death."--BOOK JACKET.
