Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Iranian Peoples, Vol. 1: From the German With Darmesteter's Sketch of "Persia" And Goldziher's "Influence of Parsism on Islam" From the French; Translated by G. K. Nariman It is easy to indulge in cheap sarcasm at the expones of the much-motoring, much-beclubbing, theatre-going, racing, sport. Ing section of the latter-day Parsis to whom a book on philo logical and religious antiquities is bound to prove a violent 50porific. It is truer to point to the growing number of men whose scholarship has entitled them to rank among Western researchers.3 Indeed the sounder View would appear to prevail that our scholarship has outgrown our material prosperity. And this brings me to the raison d' etre of this translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Given the lack of information about this population in the Westrn world, the focused materials presented in this book help build a better information base on the diverse practices and beliefs of Iranian outside their homeland." - Choice "[This] first full-length study of the Iranian Muslim diaspora in Britain . . . enhances our empirical and theoretical understanding." - The Muslim World Book Review An estimated 75,000 Iranians emigrated to Britain after the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. They are politically, religiously, socio-economically and ethnically heterogeneous, and have found themselves in the ongoing process of settlement. The aim of this book is to explore facets of this process by examining the ways in which religious traditions and practices have been maintained, negotiated and rejected by Iranians from Muslim backgrounds and how they have served as identity-building vehicles during the course of migration, in relation to the political, economic, and social situation in Iran and Britain. While the ethnographic focus is on Iranians, this book touches on more general questions associated with the process of migration, transnational societies, Diasporas, and religious as well as ethnic minorities. Kathryn Spellman received her MSc. and Ph.D. in Politics and Sociology at Birkbeck College, University of London, where she is currently an Honorary Research Fellow. She is a lecturer of sociology at Huron International University in London and Syracuse University (London Campus). Petrushevsky, the foremost Soviet Iranologist, was originally published in Russia in 1966. After discussing the Arabian environment in which the faith of Islam arose, and the character—legal, social and doctrinal—of the new message, the author moves on to trace the peculiarly Iranian development of Islamic beliefs, the schisms which arose in its early history, and the eventual creation of a Sunni orthodoxy. Written from the Russian perspective, with Russia's long contact with Iranian and Turkish Muslim neighbors, it provides a stimulating and salutary balance to the study of the Islamic world.

Book excerpt: A sweeping new work exploring Iran’s cultural import and influence on each of the world’s major religions Today it is Iran's association with Islam that commands discussion and debate. But this perception obscures a far more influential and complex relationship with religion. Iran has in fact played an unparalleled role in shaping all the world religions, injecting Iranian ideas into the Jewish, Buddhist, Christian, and Muslim traditions. This vivid and surprising work explores the manner in which Persian culture has interacted with and transformed each world faith, from the migration of the Israelites to Iran thousands of years ago, to the influence of Iranian notions on Mahayana Buddhism and Christianity. Travelling through thousands of years of history, Richard Foltz offers a vital and fresh account of our spiritual heritage in this fascinating region.
