Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the Israelite prophets lived and spoke centuries ago, their message still resonates in this twenty-first century. Joan Cook captures the essence of these prophetic messages. She does so with an eye toward careful biblical scholarship: historical and political considerations, chronological timelines, and literary patterns. But Cook moves beyond the important scholarly study to consider how prophetic messages speak to the religious, pastoral, and socio-economic concerns of our time. Hear anew these prophetic messengers and discover the practical - and challenging - implications of their words for today."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2003-09-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernhard Anderson has written a commentary that gives new perspective and clarity to the prophetic tradition and demonstrates the timely nature of the prophets' messages for today. 'The Eighth Century Prophets' treats the four Old Testament figures as a 'prophetic quartet' that produced a powerful and startling consensus about Israel's relationship to God and the world. The core of the prophetic message is shown to be both religious and political as Anderson describes and explains the great themes of Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Micah: divine judgment, the present and the future, justice and mercy, the covenant, walking humbly with God, and waiting for God. Included is a bibliography and time chart of Eighth Century Israel.

Book Eighth Century Prophets

Download or read book Eighth Century Prophets written by D N Premnath and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful sociological introduction, D. N. Premnath brings together the social reality of eighth century B.C.E. Israel and Judah and the prophetic oracles of Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Micah to explore the significance of their prophetic message and vision in today's context. He focuses on various dimensions of land accumulation by the upper class and its effect on the poor. Premnath uniquely uses a systemic sociological approach, incorporating both comparative and historical data to reconstruct the social reality of the period and to reveal aspects of the oracles not covered by previous exegesis. The sociohistorical section will be of keen interest to students as well as to scholars.

Book The Kingdoms of Israel and Judah in the Eighth and Seventh Centuries B C E

Download or read book The Kingdoms of Israel and Judah in the Eighth and Seventh Centuries B C E written by Antoon Schoors and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of Assyrian domination over Israel and Judah (ca. 750–650 B.C.E.) can be reconstructed with reasonable accuracy. For example, both biblical and extrabiblical records indicate that the northern kingdom (Israel) came to an end in 722 with the fall of Samaria, while several decades later Jerusalem, capital of the southern kingdom (Judah), narrowly escaped being taken by Sennacherib. The first half of the seventh century was dominated by Manasseh in Judah, who not only served his overlords the Assyrians but also practiced a bloody form of despotism. With regard to biblical literature, the eighth century was the period of Israel’s first great literary prophets: Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Micah. Other important texts, such as the Book of the Covenant, the early stories about the kings, the early forms of the patriarchal narratives in Genesis, and collections of proverbs, were either created or underwent profound editorial shaping during this time. This volume surveys the history of this formative period and presents a critical study of the biblical literature that originated within this historical context, as well as theological conclusions that readers may draw from these texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel: From the Eighth to the Fifth Century; Their Faith and Their Message There is perhaps, at the present day, no subject of biblical study which possesses more interest for the lay public than Prophecy, a fact which must be most gratifying to writers on this subject, though it carries with it one serious difficulty. For there is also probably no subject of biblical study which engages the attention of the specialists to the extent that Prophecy does; and a presentation which would fill the needs of the one class of readers would hardly meet the requirements of the other. I cannot claim to have solved this difficulty. I am aware that there are parts of the present volume which the lay reader may prefer to pass over, and that there are other parts which may seem commonplace to the scholar, but I believe that this is almost inevitable in the present stage of biblical criticism. The general reader will probably find the first and the last chapter most readable, as these were originally lectures delivered before a lay audience, the first as an exposition of the Faith of the Prophets, the second as an exposition of their Message. These lectures, which were delivered in Albany, N. Y. in January, 1910, at the request of my friend and former pupil, Rev. S. H. Goldenson, I was strongly urged to publish at the time. They are here substantially unchanged, though the second has been necessarily somewhat enlarged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Prophets of the Lord written by Mary J. Evans and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-11-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament prophets were people who looked at the world and heard God speaking. They looked at the creation and felt God's power. They looked at pain and poverty and felt God's compassion. They looked at oppression, corruption and idolatry and felt God's anger. They looked at faithful believers and felt God's encouragement. They looked to the future and envisaged God's action. They knew doubt, discouragement and rejection but they stood firm because in looking at God's world they had sensed God's love. They were real people speaking into real situations in a world where people's behavior and reactions were, in spite of all the advances of modern technology, not so very different from our own. Mary Evans, who lectured in Old Testament Studies for many years, firmly believes that these people who spoke from God so many years ago are dynamically relevant in church and society today. This book helps you understand the prophets and appreciate their relevance.
