Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Puritan's Daughter: Sequel to "Creole and Puritan"; A Character Romance of Two Sections This is entirely true to the theme. It is so natural, so logical, so inevitable as to pass unchallenged by the acutest Southern sensibility. In his allegiance to his art Mr. De Leon sacrifices no part of his loyalty to his blood and birth. The moral of his writing is entirely just and Sound. But the fact remains - and it is this which is noteworthy - that our interest centers in a Northern rather than in a Southern group; and that. As for the author, we lose all trace of his identity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Puritan, Vol. 1: A Series of Essays, Critical, Moral, and Miscellaneous In doing this, I have attempted to weave my fragments into something of a uniform piece; and herein I' suppose myself to resemble Virgil in the fore-mentioned eclogue. It would be vanity indeed, to pretend that my tesselated pavement is as beautiful as his; but I trust it is no great arrogance to claim for it as much art in union of design, as is found in his patchwork song. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alban, or the History of a Young Puritan, Vol. 1 of 2 At the sea end of the point, stands a white light house: nearly two miles higher up, on the opposite heights, is a still formidable fort; and near it, (at the present wiiting, ) a colossal monument of some passage in the war of the Revolution, of which that fort was the scene. The bay is also dotted with a few rocky islets. From the absence of wood, and the profusion of stone, the landscape, if bold, is rather severe in aspect, but at the infiowing of the river, some out jutting points, covered with thick groves, promise a softer inland. Book The English in America Vol 1

Download or read book The English in America Vol 1 written by J. A. Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English in America, Vol. 1: The Puritan Colonies The purpose and scope of this book have been explained in the preface to an earlier volume. I have however deviated from the plan there laid down, in that I have given two volumes to a portion of my subject which I hoped to dispose of in one. I shall probably make a still further deviation, and instead of concluding my work with one more volume, give one to New York and the Quaker colonies, and one to the whole body of colonies while under the first and second Georges. In this I propose to deal chiefly with the relations which existed between the colonists and the English government. It may not be amiss to say a word as to the sources from which I have taken my materials. I have endeavored throughout to act on the sound legal principle of never adducing inferior testimony where better could be had. On that principle I have endeavored invariably to consult an original authority where such could be found. But where, as sometimes has been the case, writers who cannot claim to be original authorities have used materials which are now lost or inaccessible, I have not scrupled to rely upon them, if I could satisfy myself that they were to be trusted. A writer who does so no doubt runs the risk of being called a compiler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earl's Daughter, Vol. 1 The peaceful soothing words of the daily service were said, and when they were ended there stood be fore the' altar of God, the high-born inheritors of honour and wealth, and the gentle children nursed in affluence and retirement, and the humble offspring of poverty, united by one creed, one hope, one danger, and summoned to join in one common act of self dedication. Together they listened to the earnest supplication which was to bring down upon them from on high the sevenfold gifts of grace and then side by side they knelt, and each in turn bowed beneath a hand of blessing - the blessing of their Spiritual Father in Christ. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parson's Daughter, Vol. 1 of 2 But days were on, and George Augustus Frederick grew up to manhood his time as midshipman was served, and he had passed his examination, when another term of service as flab lieutenant to a distant connexion in India was entered upon and concluded, with promotion to the rank of commander, and the enjoyment of the moderate half-pay of seven shillings and sixpence per diem, without a chance of farther employment. And thus at the age of five-and-twenty, poor George Augustus Frederick had reached what to him was likely to be the head of his profession, and found himself again at home, and without any earthly pursuit. Still, however, warmly attached to his lady-mother, he could not but feel satisfied that the pittance of income which be derived from his commission rendered a regular drain upon her slender funds unnecessary; and anxious as she was to enjoy as much of his society as he could spare her, he generally passed the intervals of his engagements at her hotel.
