As he finishes he warns Clarren to have her hair cut so that it does not go beyond her knee and to watch that what is cut away is burned immediately in a fire so that no one may use it to cast a spell on her. Before departing he warns her among other things to take care no one in her household destroys a cobweb, and to avoid black dogs, cats and hens. What has brought Clarren to such measures? She’s getting married. She is taken from a very sheltered life to be a political pawn, where she is suppose to influence powerful people, as she is caught up in a power play for the throne from double-crosses to the return of an heir, long thought dead. Book Profits Priests and Princes

Download or read book Profits Priests and Princes written by Peter Minowitz and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In launching modern economics, Adam Smith paved the way for laissez-faire capitalism, Marxism, and contemporary social science. This book scrutinizes Smith's disparagement of politics and religion to illuminate the subtlety of his rhetoric, the depth of his thought, and the ultimate shortcomings of his project. The author analyzes Smith's ideas on government, justice, human psychology, and international relations, stressing Smith's efforts to elevate wealth at the expense of citizenship and to replace normative political philosophy with historical theorizing and empirical modeling that emphasize economic causes. The book also provides the most comprehensive interpretation available of Smith's views on religion, examining the discrepancies between The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments while demonstrating Smith's intransigent rejection of heaven, hell, Providence, Jesus, eschatology, prophecy, revelation, and theocracy. Throughout, the author combats superficial interpretations of Smith by revealing the complexity of his views on a variety of subjects: the deceptive allure of technology, wealth, power, and empire; the relationship between political and economic freedom; the impact of economic progress on warfare; the quarrel between ancients and moderns; the difficulties posed to the citizen by the burgeoning complexity of society; the differences between human wisdom, divine wisdom, and the wisdom of nature; the obstacles to separating church and state; and the social and psychological roots of religion. The concluding chapter appraises the demise of communism in light of the Marxian emancipation of economics from politics and religion.

Book Prophet Priest Prince and the Already Not Yet

Download or read book Prophet Priest Prince and the Already Not Yet written by TK Dunn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the enigmatic theological expression of P. T. Forsyth, TK Dunn explores how a holistic and comprehensive interpretation of the threefold office of Christ undermines three critical areas of dispensational theology: the literal hermeneutic, disdain for the church catholic, and a convoluted interpretation of the end times focused on ethnic, corporate Israel. Interacting with liberalism as Forsyth’s foil, and using the exegetical analysis of Scripture by G. E. Ladd, Dunn argues that the kingdom of God is not the human-driven utopia dreamed of by liberal scholars nor a dystopic, disconnected future realm exclusively for ethnic, corporate Israel; rather, the kingdom must be understood as the dominion of Christ’s reign over a redeemed people who order their lives according to his gospel. Access to the kingdom, therefore, is open to all who are redeemed by the priestly work of Christ, submit to the king’s constitution, and thereby live according to the prophetic proclamations of kingdom life.

Book Idol Temples and Crafty Priests

Download or read book Idol Temples and Crafty Priests written by S.J. Barnett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barnett traces the Christian critique of the Church and its history in Protestant (English) and Catholic (Italian) thought from the Reformation to the Enlightenment. More than one hundred and fifty years of bitter polemic between the two great confessions and their religious dissidents produced an unprecedented, comparative historical and sociological anticlericalism. In the last decades of the seventeenth century, English dissenting thought was pregnant with a devastating critique of the church, which came to be termed the 'Deist' view of Church history: by 1700 the cornerstone of high 'Enlightenment anticlerical thought' was in ascent.
